Reject Plan To Send Mothers To See POWs
WASHINGTON (UP)—The Army has turned down a plan to let the mothers of 23 "progressive" American prisoners go to Korea to try to talk their sons out of staying with their Communist captors.
"It is considered neither practical nor advisable that they go to Korea," the Army said in a statement last night. It pointed out that there are certain "probems" which it feels makes such a program impossible to carry out.
The California Executive Committee of the American Legion appealed to President Eisenhower Sunday to authorize the mothers "to personally visit with their sons and discuss their renunciation of American citizenship."
The Army noted that the men are in the custody of the Neutral sion and not under the direct control of the United Nations command.
It also recalled that under the terms of the Korean armistice agreement the membership of "explainer teams" which are permitted to talk to prisoners is limited to seven men per 1000 prisoners.
While barring the mothers from going to Korea, the Army said it will try to deliver "several communications" already received for some of the prisoners.

Jury Denies Damages In Suit, Counter-Suit
SANTA ANA—Finding that drivers of both automobiles involved in a traffic accident east of Tustin May 10, 1952, were negligent, a jury of seven men and five women denied damage to all adult parties in the crash.
Marine T. Sgt. Alfred H. Cregger of Cherry Point, N.C. had asked $14,000 for injuries to himself and his wife, Mary J., and $6000 for their daughter, Mary V., while James E. Cummings and his wife, Beulah, of Irvine had sought more than $52,000 for their injuries.
Evidence in the suit and counter suit was involved, and it was shown that at one point Mrs. Cummings was believed to have died from her injuries. However, the jury did award $1000 to the 2½-year-old-Cregger child.
