Irish, Spartans, Bruins Top Three In Up Rankings
By NORMAN MILLER
NEW YORK (UP) — Notre Dame's impressive opening game performance against Oklahoma earned it the accolade as the nation's No. 1 college football team today in the first weekly ratings of the United Press Board of Coaches.
Michigan State, 1952 mythical national champion, was ranked second, UCLA third and Ohio State fourth in the ratings of the 35 leading coaches who comprise the United Press board.
The Fighting Irish, whose 28-21 victory over Oklahoma showed they have made an excellent adjustment of platoonless football, received 25 first place votes and 325 out of a possible total of 350 polls.
Michigan State, which beat Iowa 21-7 in its season opener last Saturday, attracted four first place votes and 264 points; UCLA, with victories over Oregon State and three first place votes and 213 points, while Ohio State, 36-12 conqueror of Indiana in its '53 debut, had 167 points.
Others at Top
Southern California, Maryland, Michigan, Oklahoma, Baylor and Georgia Tech rounded out the top 10 teams in that order. Southern California and Michigan each attracted one first place vote and was chosen for every place from first to 10th in the voting. Baylor was the only other team to receive a first place vote.
Mississippi State headed the second 10 teams with 66 points, followed by Duke, Louisiana State, Texas, Rice, Georgia, Mississippi, Army and Wisconsin. There was a

BASEBALL TO MOVE ON SHOWBOAT UMP
NEW YORK—Yankee and Dodger players will give fans the "low-down" on the outstanding plays of each World Series game as seen from the playing field, immediately before game time in a fifteen minute TV-radio warm-up program on the Gillette Cavalcade of Sports, a daily pre-game highspot to the telecasts and broadcasts of the games themselves.
For the first time in World Series history, the participating players, already in uniform, will appear before television cameras and radio mikes before taking their positions on the diamond. They will give fans the inside on how the game-winning catch was made, what kind of a pitch was powdered for the winning runs, or talk about the pitching performance.
This warm-up program, conducted by the "Fordham Flash," Frankie Frisch, goes on the air at 9:45 PST on the NBC television network and the Mutual radio network. This is twenty minutes before "Play Ball!" Baseball Commissioner Ford Prickle will be a guest on the first program. Yankee manager Casey Stengel and Dodger boss Chuck Dressen are also slated to appear during the Series.
Baseball is on the move against the quick thumb of the umpire, which never before has been so prominent and alarming in the game writes Joe King, in The Sporting News. Recently, it has stuck out like a 3-D on the flat screen.
While the mechanical work of the men in blue is considered adequate, and at a new high in some quarters, all of the trade is alerted to the intrusion of umplies into the playing of the game, through pricious, intemperate and injudicious acts.
The league presidents, Warren Giles of the National and Will Harridge of the American, are concerned with showboating by umplies as a grave offense.
Giles states: "The main fault of our umplies is the loss of poise. An umpire can help calm a situation, but he cannot when he becomes dramatic too, in gestures and inflection. When an umpire walks away, and a player follows, then everybody sees and knows who has made the argument."
Instead, writes Joe King, in the national baseball weekly, we have had numerous cases this year of umplies walking challengingly after athletes or managers.
Harridge concurs: "It is the human element which causes most umplies difficulty. Today we have too much tendency among umplies to grandstand it."
General Manager George Weiss of the Yankees and President Walter O'Malley of the Dodgers, although not in concert, may have provided the solution, with their combined progressive thoughts.
Weiss favors an American League program to develop umplies as a club would bring along playing prospects, while O'Malley calls for an all-baseball training plan so longer will be American.
Sports Car Road Races On Tap This Week-End
Speed drivers were racing to get on the books this week for the sports car meet Oct. 3-4 at Reeves Field, Terminal Island, as Race Director Chet Lancaster announced ten new entries.
This second batch of newcomers bring the total race entries to 21 with names of top flight speedsters from Santa Barbara to San Diego scattered through the list.
More than 20,000 fans are expected to view the seven races on Saturday, October 3 and the five final events slated for Sunday, Oct. 4. One motorcycle race in on tap each day.
Races open at 1 p.m. General admission is $1.50, with grandstand seats $1 extra. The meet is being staged by the Long Beach MG Club in co-operation with the California Sports "Car Club and the Long Beach Junior Chamber of Commerce. A large share of the proceeds are earmarked for the benefit of Navy Relief.
Suspense is promised when the throttle-benders tackle the tricky 2.6 mile airport course that includes a speed-producing one-mile straight-away.

NEW YORK (UP) — You can't blame the big fellow from Indiana for being just a bit apprehensive as he approaches the World Series.
Base hits are bread and butter to a ball player. And last year at this time, strapping Gil Hodges hit the lowest depths to which any World Series batter ever plunged.
Big Gil, swinging his heart out for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and for the little Hidges at home, didn't get a hit in 21 heart-breaking trips to the World Series plate. It was a record, and one no wants.
Too Darned New Gill has higher hopes baseball's classic post-title this year, and their foundation for his optimizing down the stretch tilt the six foot, two inch Doger has been hitting.
He is, they say in pait a bit too nice.
"Gil doesn't even get the umpires," flames Charley Dressen. "Once they call him out on me He comes back and ties bad they were. I keep to let them know about he's such a nice guy even do that."
This season he has more than 100 runs for straight year. He's therional Leaguer with this performance going for A Littie Tenn
You can understand ness therefore as he for the series. But you would surprise you. But thinking of himself. His kind. He's hoping to for the Dodgers, and fily of which he is so nothing comes before home. Twice now he his arrival at spring tr with his wife during th was expecting.

TOE DARNED NICE
Gil has higher hopes as he faces baseball's classic post-season battle this year, and there's a solid foundation for his optimism. Coming down the stretch this season, the six foot, two inch Dodger slugger has been hitting.
He is, they say in private, just a bit too nice.
"Gil doesn't even get mad at the umpires," flames Manager Charley Dressen. "Once in a while they call him out on a bad pitch. He comes back and tells me how bad they were. I keep telling him to let them know about it. But he's such a nice guy he won't even do that."
This season he has knocked in more than 100 runs for the fifth straight year. He's the only National Leaguer with that kind of performance going for him.
A LITTLE TENSE
You can understand his tenseness therefore as he gets ready for the series. But the reasons would surprise you. Big Gill isn't thinking of himself. He's not that kind. He's hoping to do his best for the Dodgers, and for the family of which he is so proud.
Nothing comes before Big Gill's home. Twice now he has delayed his arrival at spring training to be with his wife during the times she was expecting.
