Trojan Coach Hill Waiting for First Sustained Drive By ALEX KAHN LOS ANGELES (UP)—Southern California captured the Pacific Coast Conference Championship and went to the Rose Bowl last year without a sustained offense and it looked today like the Trojans were doing a repeat act in 1953. Coach Jes Hill was the authority for the statement that his defending champs have failed to show him an offense. In fact, Hill told Southern California football writers yesterday that he would settle for a well executed play for the season and has yet to see one. Asked if he considered tailback Aramis Dandoy's pass to quarterback George Boraniec from a buck lateral well executed, Hill replied that it was a standard play for a single-wing team and wouldn't have worked if the Minnesota defender had been in position to stop it. "Gentlemen," said the polite Hill, "the fact remains that we took advantage of breaks to score and win. We're making too many mistakes. There was not a single standout player or play on our side of the line in the Minnesota game." Even on defense, Hill conceded the Gophers made his players look bad because of the great open field running of Paul Giel. "He's the greatest open field runner in football today." enthusiastically remarked Hill. It's impossible, however, to compare him and UCLA's Paul Cameron because they are different type players. Cameron is the plunging tailback who makes yardage by strength if he's STOPPED. And Cameron is the better passer. But they both are truly great hacks." One of Cameron's coaches, assistant coach Deke Brackett said the UCLA star was a "coach's player" because he instinctively did the right thing, didn't fumble and rarely made a mistake in judgment. He called Cameron the greatest stand-up passer in college ranks. LOOK AT THESE Long Beach Vikings vs. Santa Ana Dons Friday, 8 P.M., Santa Ana Bowl Long Beach and Santa Ana Colleges clash in the Santa Ana Munipal Bowl at 8 p.m. Friday in final, non-conference football game for both teams before they begin competition in their respective leagues. Coach John Ward's Dons open with a 13 to 0 loss at Riverdale, then turned back a stubborn Palomar College team last week. Long Beach journeyed to West Contra Costa and bowed 26 to 18 to the northern Junior Rose Bowl contender. So the Friday game promises to be hard fought, with both teams featuring a ground game. The Dons and Vikings played to a scoreless tie last year, and in 12 games since 1928, Santa Ana has an 8 to 2 edge, with 2 ties. An oddity in modern football was the fact that Long Beach and West Contra Costa both failed to complete a pass, with the Vikings trying four and the Comets six. In the last Santa Ana game, however, the Dons completed 10 out of 19 aerials and Palomar made only 2 out of 9. Ward plugged up the weak aerial defense which led to the Riverside defeat. Coach Buck Andreason hopes his Vikings can overcome fumbles and penalties, so costly in last week's defeat. Gerald McDougall, at Long Beach Poly halfback, is one of the leading Viking offense aces. He scored two touchdowns against the Comets, one a 49-yard dash through center. Ward was still trying out new men and combinations against the bulky Palomar team, but it was the defense which really won the game. The only touchdown followed a Santa Ana drive to the Palomar, 13, a Palomar pass interception, and then a resounding tackle by Larry Holcomb which jarred the ball from Fullback John Troutman and let Don Center Gene Geselle recover on the 18. Jim Roberts, explosive fullback, took a pitchout from Quarter Bob Switzer and went for a touchdown, after eluding a tackler on the 10. Jarrett Terrell kicked goal. The game's best play also featured Santa Ana's defense. On the second half kickoff, Palomar's Frank Rivas fumbled but teammate Carl Geisel picked up the loose ball and was in the clear for a touchdown until fleet Charley Neal overhauled him on the 7. On the first play, Troutman again was hit so hard he bounced and Santa Ana's Chuck Lyons got the ball back to end the scoring threat. Injuries sidelineled Co-Capt. Jack Maynihan with a lip cut, Halfback Aaron Peralta, Fullback Jim Roberts and Guard Bob Burke with leg injuries, but all are expected to prepares at Anaheim.
