BYNOPISIS Aboard the yacht "Spiritus" riding anchor off Nassau, Bahamas, Lord Rodermie Tremaine, his older sister Lea Tremaine, swait the arrival of further guests. Darius Opdyke, a weathered scout and owner of the luxury craft had invited eight people with him to the South American guest. Remaining guests finally board ship. There's Gay Walton, movie actress and her very mature co-worker Frederick Brown, a lawyer; Larry Redding, broker; and his hand-servant with Carlita; Dr. Ruben Randolph, psychiatrist. CHAPTER THREE OPDYKE turned to the rest of us, and began to talk about Lady Tremaine instead of so her—always an infuriating attitude. "She was born with everything. Money, position, fame. All the advantages I had to fight for. Do you suppose she is really invulnerable?" Lisa allowed herself to laugh. "Are you hunting for the chink in my armor, Darius? Or are you telling me you have found it?" I thought that Robert might back her up in her defiance, but instead it was another guest who felt called upon to intervene. Dr. Randolph produced a smile which must have been a big help in his practice, because it managed to be sympathetic, and at the same time indicate that he knew everything about everything. "Sometimes it is dangerous to have too much information." All he accomplished was to draw the lightning onto himself. "You're the one that knows, Randy." The doctor seemed taken aback. "Just what do you mean?" Mr. Opdyke looked as pleased as a fisherman with a bite on his line. "Suppose a patient told you something which would interest the police?" "Professional secrecy is my first duty." Randolph answered promptly, but there was a defensive gleam in his gray eyes. Mr. Opdyke let him off the hook. "Of course. Of course. You psychiatrists are the priests of our modern world. You try to do us what the confessional did for our ancestors—give our consciences a safety valve. The only trouble is you have no code you really go by, and so we get mixed up. The lawyers are better off. I'm sure Mr. Brown would never let a criminal escape." Brown's middle-aged countenance was not adapted to the expression of shades of feeling, but a change did come over it—a sort of intensified petrification. His hairsty hand paused halfway to his mouth and hung there, perfectly steady. "Sentiment has no place in my business, Mr. Opdyke." "You resigned from the F.B.I. about eight years ago, didn't you?" Brown took his mouthful and calmly chewed it up before he answered. "I agree with the doctor. It doesn't do to know too much." "I like risk, as I said before still, if anything happened to me, things will happen to a lot of other people. I've seen to that, haven't I, Jonas?" The remark was addressed to the Captain of the Spiritue, who was sitting at the foot of the table. He had not said a word so far, and now he merely grunted. He pulled his black eyebrows down until they hid his eyes, and his sharp nose quivered as if he smelt something bad. Dr. Randolph had told me during the afternoon that Jonas and Opdyke often cruised together with no other company, and seemed to have an understanding without words. It was a ship's rule that he joined the company at dinner, but he had been known to claim the smallest cloud as an excuse for staying on the bridge. Nobody knew anything about his past. He looked to me like a cross between a pirate and a doacon. He was a strange one, for sure. I noticed that Larry Redding was watching our host like a man at a rat hole. "You really are corny, Uncle Oppy," he said abruptly. "I am not his uncle." Mr. Opdyke informed no one in particular, "but I have taken care of the dear boy ever since his father died. Havent I, Loppy?" "You bet," Larry answered heartily, but the red came up out of his collar. With his pink cheeks and his crew cut, he looked as if he ought still to be in a sweater trotting after a coach, rather than on the stock exchange. "Larry and Carolina come to with everything. Don't you, clown?" "You bet," Larry said again, in the look he shot his uncle was affectionate. During these uncomfortable tarchings, Gay Walton had been getting more and more nervous patting her ruffles, smoothing curls. I couldn't blame her. I got nervous too. Now tried out a little professional charm. Sitting on Opdyke's chair she laid a delicate hand on his glove and looked up at him appealing. "How long will it take us to La Guirare, Oppy darling?" Mr. Opdyke didn't buy it. You thinking of jumping ship? Gay's bright laugh tinkled. unless I have to, of course agent said he would wire me contract..." Opdyke's cynical eye was much for her, and her voice trailed off. We were all so keyed up by time that a little cracking behind us made us jump as someone had started throw china. But it was only Todd, steward, oddly engaged in break an egg at the sideboard, and so rating the white into a small nese bowl. "You had a fleck of yolk last night," Opdyke told him verely. Then he explained to me "I smooth it on my face be I go to sleep. It prevents wrinkle You should try it, Carletta that you need it, of course." Carletta Redding exhaled, her plunging neckline plump lower. She was a work of an olive-skinned woman as stone, who could have been age between twenty and forty. Her black satin dress did not loss us guessing about her perfecture. She raised her beautiful groomed eyebrows. "I soon will. Is that what mean, Uncle Oppy?" If she meant to annoy him, succeeded for his mood chair abruptly, and he suggested she go up to the promenade this suited everyone, and we hurried out like people making escape.
