Group Seeking to Halt Closing to Camp Roberts PASO ROBLES (UP)—A citizen group opposed to the closing of Camp Roberts, pleaded with President Eisenhower today to halt the Army from perpetuating a "Country Club" existence at Fort Ord. In a telegram to the President, Yale group claimed that the Army is spending $25,000,000 at Fort Ord to cover up a "mistake" by Army eplanners. The telegram was signed by Russell Gates, mayor of Paso Robles and chairman of the Camp Roberts National Defense Committee. The "mistake" to which the committee referred was the closing of Camp Roberts and retention of Fort Ord as the major troop. ORVAL'S Keys To All Away Look While You Wait... Your Schwinn Bicycle Dealer 419 W. Center Phone 2759 HOUSES BOUGHT FOR CASH HOUSES FOR SALE at Stanton House training center in California. False Economy "Last June, seven Army training posts across the nation were closed because of a supposed economy measure," the wire said. "The Secretary of the Army announced that $30,000,000 a year would be saved by this move." Instead, an equivalent amount is being spent on an antiquated installation. In California, Fort Ord was retained instead of Camp Roberts, although Roberts had repeatedly been given the highest training ratings ever accorded in Army history. The committee pointed out that Fort Ord has 29,000 acres and "is incapable of expansion." Camp Roberts and the adjoining Hunter Liggett reservation have 283,000 acres, about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles "in the most accessible location on the Pacific Coast." Ord Fogbound The committee said Fort Ord is frequently fogbound and lost 40 training days during 1952 while Roberts has lost 2 1-2 days in two years. "In spite of these acts, Pentagon officials insist that Fort Ord is adequately even though it is glacated in the heart of a densely populated area and mortar shells fired on the reservation have landed on many occasions on private property," the committee said. In San Francisco, a Sixth Army spokesman said all comment on the matter would have to come from Washington. Gen. Dean Due In U.S. Tonight HONOLULU (UP)—Maj. Gen. William F. Dean was back on American soil today for the first time in nearly six years and he said it was "the thrill of my life." Dean arrived here last night for three years, Dean last toured American soil 71 months ago when he passed through Hawaii en route to Korea in 1947. He was captivated during the battle for Taejon in summer of 1950. The general, who has awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, leaves for Travis Force Base near San Francisco this morning. He is scheduled arrive in California at 11 p.m. Family Gathers On hand to greet him will his wife, Mildred, his mother, 17 other members of his family. They were all gathered at Dean's Berkeley home to cater to the anxious hours until the eral's arrival. When Dean arrived in Hawaii he shouted as he got off a plane: "This is the thrill of life! I feel like a million dollars. In characteristic fashion, tried to turn the attention of crowd to a repatriated soldier from Hawaii. He even went so as to take Sgt. Clarence Y. Young of Honolulu by the army have him walk down the ramp him past an Air Force band through a 12-man honor guard Air Force men. However, high ranking officers took the sergeant to his own hotel, Dean told them, "He's a hero!" GEN. DEAN DUE IN U.S. TONIGHT HONOLULU (UP) — Maj. Gen. William F. Dean was back on American soil today for the first time in nearly six years and he said it was "the thrill of my life." Dean arrived here last night aboard a routine military air evacuation plane from Tokyo. Despite his hope that there be no ceremonies on his arrival, 200 well wishers were on hand and gave him a tumultuous welcome. Three Years in Prison A prisoner of the Communists How much citrus does Sunkist market? THREE OUT OF FOUR... Year in and year out, three-fourths of all the California and Arizona citrus fruit is marketed by Sunkist. Every eight minutes, day and night, Sunkist ships another car of fresh citrus to market. About 200 cars every day of the year! It takes a lot of selling to move this much fruit. This is just another way of saying that three citrus growers out of every four are Sunkist members—and proud of it.
