A-Year-Old Plumber in College
Officials of Los Angeles City State college did a double take last week when 78-year-old Charlize Arndt registered for classes marking him the oldest freshman in the new semester. Although he had been a plumber for more than 40 years, Arndt said he would attend plumbing classes in order to try latest developments in the business.
Like any good plumber I want to keep abreast of things so I can serve my customers," he declared. "I've found out that you don't learn too much about anything." The plumbing classes are measured jointly by the city, labor and the Associated Plumbing Contractors of Los Angeles, of which Arndt is a past president. Arndt never attended college but completed high school. Born in Evanston, Ill., he came to Southern California in 1902 and opened his own shop seven years later. Active as a plumber ever since, Arndt headed the Associated Plumbing Contractors in 1941 and has patented several plumbing items. He said plumbing offers many opportunities because of the increasing demand for people with mechanicia educations.
Arndt is the father of four children, two of whom graduated from college. He has four grandchildren. When is he going to retire? "Not for a long time", he declared. "I've got a lot to learn yet."

UCLA Gets 19th Century Collection of Books
A large and important collection of books published in the 19th century by the noted English publisher William Pickering has been acquired by the Library of the University of California at Los Angeles.
Librarian Lawrence Clark Powell termed the new acquisition an important supplement to the mass Sadleir collection of 19th century English fiction purchased by UCLA last year. Most of Pickering's publications were editions of classics or works by English authors ranging from Chaucer to Edward Fitzgerald.
"Pickering," said Dr. Powell, "did more to raise the standards of book production during the first half of the 19th century than any other publisher. By good taste in subject matter, typography, binding, and by honest craftsmanship, he created enduring monuments of excellence in commercial publishing."
Included in the 311 volume collection are such rare and important items as the first Pickering publication, the Diamond Classic edition of Horace, 1820; Stothard's Alphabet, 1830; Blake's Songs of Innocence, 1839; and the seldom seen Euclid's Elements, published in 1847.
