One parcel lies west of the city and is bounded by Crescent Avenue, Euclid Avenue, the Santa Ana Freeway, and Loara street. The second parcel is east of the city and is a portion of the area between Santa Ana street and extends almost to South street. The area marked for 6000 square feet is similar to that area marked for 7200 square feet, but lies north of Lincoln Avenue, west of Anaheim. Planners also recommended adoption of a proposed amendment that the 55-foot frontage minimum be raised to 60 feet for lots containing 6000 square feet; a 55-foot frontage minimum for lots containing 7200 square feet and 78 feet frontage for 9000 square foot lots. Commissioner Robert Mungall stated that the 55-foot frontage minimum on 6000 square feet lot is not sufficient for the type of houses being built today and the frontage should be 60 feet instead of the present minimum of 55 feet. Joe "Doc Brownlee could keep the money as far as I was concerned. The mail and the jewels eventually would be returned to Wells ning for you, so I figured be Torgin had him. Well, out of my badge now. But in my badge before Till tu CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN IN THE darkness before the dawn they rode valiantly on to Sheriff Griffin's house where they aroused him from deep slumber. Then they continued to his office and assembled there. Brownlee came quickly to the matter of the mission. "Ive come for that letter Flint Manning gave you years ago when you were his deputy. You know the one I mean, the letter to be opened if anybody ever was brought to trial for that old stage robbery," he said. Griffin shrugged. "Sure," he said. Taking the keys, he unlocked a desk drawer and lifted a chamois bag from the litter within. "The Wells Fargo jewels," he said absently. He pawed at a heap of papers. "Here it is." He passed over a sealed letter. Brownlee handed it to Manning. "Read it, boy." Cole's eyes ran swiftly over the yellowed pages of the letter written by his father and dated March, 1892. When he had finished it he looked up at them and said: "So, Doc, you were the bandit and Packrat had seen someone burying something that night near his shack. But wait, let me read to you briefly from this letter. It may help you and me to judge. In droning voice he began: 'When I, Flint Manning, law man, demanded an explanation Brownlee confessed that he had taken the money in desperation. Fighting a typhoid fever epidemic at the time, he knew the crying need of the basin for an equipped hospital. More than that, with the basin's population growing, each year would see a greater need for such a hospital. As he talked of his plans and dreams, I was convinced of his sincerity and selflessness, and thus I made a decision which I have never since regretted." "Doc Brownlee could keep the money as far as I was concerned. The mail and the jewels eventually would be returned to Wells Fargo after the excitement died down. I took the strong box with the jewelry and buried it close by. When I returned for it weeks later, the jewelry was gone. And that is the main reason for this letter. If some innocent party stumbled onto the jewelry and kept it, presuming it to be loot from an older robbery of bygone lawless days, that party might some day be accused of the robbery. Dr. Brownlee and I do not want that to happen. He is the man who robbed the stage, and I, in a sense, was his accomplice." "To those who may judge us harshly, I suggest an examination of the records of Brownlee's charity hospital." Manning's voice came to a stop and faded, like ghostly hoofbeats fading back into the past. "Now you see why Purdy thought Flint was the robber." Brownlee said in the heavy silence. "No matter what name we gave it, it was still robbery. Burke you'll want to lock me up till Manning can take me to Helena." "Shucks, Doc, I ain't never had a cell your size in my jail," Griffin said. "You see, I read that letter years ago and sealed it up again. When I found that jewelry in Purdy's shack, I would have kept shut, only I reckoned Flint would want it returned to Wells Fargo. Looked like I had no choice but fetch in Purdy. Then the big-town newspapers got hold of the story and played it up. So I had to keep Packrat in jail till young Manning got here. Only Packrat got away. Now you'll understand why I went hunting you, all excited, when that Ruxton teller mentioned Packrat's being held prisoner. I knew Torgin was gunning for you, so I figured be Torgin had him. Well, out of the bag now. But in my badge before I'll turn on you, Doc." Laura shook her head Hibbard supposed it was name you were worried Gramp. I did what I you'd want me to do. Of you for facing up to the open doorwra Torgin said, "I heard even of that letter. Pass it over, I say Slade Ruxton stood at shoulder, his sardonic feeling its faint hint of laugh too, held a gun. "Slash has deserted," he said, stayed with the sinking I'm no such fool as there'll be any gold for Flint Manning's noble co I think I'll take something tangible. Those Wells Fells, Sheriff. He still held Flingt's letter in his jammed the letter inside and got his own gun out a shot in the direction of way, and then he leaped at the doorway. He was that four others besides were packed in here and of them was Laura. He carry the fight outside and so as Torgin and Ruxto to the door. (To Be Continued) Like Puzzles GOP With Talk of Taxes (Continued from Page 1) Taxes to make up the lost revenue. Secretary of the Treasury George M. Humprey said recently the administration is considering a national sales tax and many other revenue proposals for possible submission to Congress next year. But he said no final decisions had been reached. Mr. Eisenhower's vigorous restatement of U.S. foreign policy was regarded here as a reply to recent criticism by Adal E. Stevenson, 1952 Democratic presidential nominee. Stevenson, speaking at Chicago Democratic rally last week, accused the administration of too great reluctance to negotiate with Russian leaders for a world peace settlement. Replies to Truman Without referring directly to Stevenson's charge, Mr. Eisenhower said his administration stands ready "to join our efforts with any men truly ready to lift the threat of catastrophic war from the world." At the same time, Mr. Eisenhower said, "we will no less passionately join our own efforts to thwart any aggressor who hopes to use that threat (of war) to rule the world." Mr. Eisenhower also took a swipe at former President Truman's frequent assertions that the Republicans favor the moneyed interests while the Democrats stand up for the "little people." Decrying efforts to divide American society into "conflicting classes and sections," Mr. Eisenhower said the Republican party believes that "we are one nation and one people." Truck Driver Held For Fatal Crash mended complaint filed which James C. Riddle, 22, of Buena Park police with the rape of a local housewife Aug. 26 following a drinking bout in a Buena Park cafe. The soldier, who was being returned to Ft. Ord for his absence at the time, was sent to the County jail for six months. Spreckels Held for Superior Court Action (Continued from Page 1) died of what sat first thought to be superficial wounds on the head," Judge Dodge observed. He went on to describe how death came to them later, after they were up and around following apparent recovery from their hurts. "It is common knowledge that a head injury doesn't always appear serious at the time," Judge Dodge declared. Mrs. Spreckels claimed that her former mate knocked her down, banged her head on the floor, dragged her along by the hair, and struck her with her own slipper with such force that the flat heel fell off and she was scratched with 11 small nails which then protruded. Nobody, Prosecutor J. Parley Smith contended in his successful argument to have Spreckels remanded to the higher court for trial, had denied that Mrs. Spreckels was beaten and mailed. Only the severity of the alleged attack was under questioning by the defense counsel, Attys Daniel Schnabel and Royal Galvin, who challenged that a 5½-ounce slipper, as hers weighed minus its heel was "not a lethal weapon." The prosecutor countered in his closing argument that the weight of the slipper "had nothing to do" with the case. Anyway, he said, a policeman's sap, or blackjack, "weighs but eight ounces" and certainly is a lethal weapon if used with force. ``` BEATS night, 1902, by Norman A. P. paged by King Fergus Bridges ning for you, so I figured it must be Torgin had him. Well, the cat's out of the bag now. But I'll turn in my badge before I'll turn a key on you, Doc." Laura shook her head. "Ma Hibbard supposed it was Flint's name you were worried about, Gramp. I did what I thought you'd want me to do. I'm proud of you for facing up to the truth." From the open doorway, Mack Torgin said, "I heard every word of that letter. Pass it over, Manning. Pass it over, I say." Slade Ruxton stood at Torgin's shoulder, his sardonic face showing its faint hint of laughter. He too, held a gun. "Slash T's crew has deserted," he said. "I alone stayed with the sinking ship. But I'm no such fool as to figure there'll be any gold for me in Flint Manning's noble confession. I think I'll take something more tangible. Those Walls Fargo jewels, Sheriff. Would they be in that chamois sack on your desk?" It was then that Manning lunged against the desk sending the lighted lamp crashing to darkness. In the confines of this little office, the roar of a forty-five made a mighty thunder, filling the corners and beating back from the walls. Torgin shooting, Manning judged, though he couldn't be sure, not with the darkness all around. He still held Flint Manning's letter in his hand. He jammed the letter inside his shirt and got his own gun out and sent a shot in the direction of the doorway, and then he leaped straight at the doorway. He was mindful that four others besides himself were packed in here and that one of them was Laura. He had to carry the fight outside and he did so as Torgin and Ruxton dashed to the door.
