Sports Parade By OSCAR PRALEY NEW YORK (UP) — Fearless Fraley's facts and figures: The psychological attitude of the Brooklyn Dodgers is going to tell the final story of their approaching world series battle against the New York Yankees, according to former yankee star Tommy Henrich. "The Dodgers have a great ball club but they are handicapped because they never have won a series," Henrich figures. "They were awfully close last year to winning and, if such a thing is possible, they can come even closer this year. To win, though, they have to think they can win. They Give It All "Everybody seems to think that the Yankees are cocky going into something like this." Tommy added. "That isn't so. They build themselves up to a determined pitch, admitting they have a tough battle on their hands and telling each other 'Let's get out there and give it all we've got.'"... That sophomoric, die for dear old Rutgers, attitude is their greatest attribute, according to the guy who was one of their best... Herman Hickman, the rotund former Army and Yale football coach, got the best laugh in person at a preview of his picture "The All American." On the screen Herman is a coach, who tells his grid star: "It doesn't matter whether we win or lose, son." To which Herman, listening with a group of sportswriters, cracked: "Times sure have changed, haven't they, Fellahs?"... It's a Bison Conservation corner: There never has been a buffalo in North America, our so-called buffalo being a bison ... (Paging "Bison Bill" Cody)... Navy's All America guard, Steve Eisenhauer, is a good student. The reason is obvious. When he attended Sheffield, Pa., high school, his mother was the math teacher, and his pop was the principal ... and, Dressen Chipper After Scouting Yanks; Bums Stars Physically Fit NEW YORK (UP)—Outfielder Carl Furillo and first-baseman Gil Hodges, key sluggers in Brooklyn's modern version of "murders' row," were declared "definitely fit" today to be in the starting lineup when the Dodgers meet the New York Yankees in the first game of the World Series. Manager Charley Dressen, still chipper after scouting the four-time world champion Yankees, announced that Furillo would return to action when the Dodgers meet the Philadelphia Phillies in their final series of the season beginning next Friday. And Hodges himself laughed off speculation that he might miss the big series when he insisted he "could play today if necessary." Broken Hand Furillo suffered a broken metacarpal bone in his left hand during his celebrated "no punch" fight with Leo Durocher of the New York Giants two weeks ago while Hodges suffered a bruised left side when he crashed into the right field wall at County Stadium Milwaukee, a week ago. "It can take time to get back in stride after a layoff," said Furillo, who leads the National League with a .344 batting average. "I'm pretty sure I'll be able to play but I don't know how well." Furillo has blasted out 21 homers and knocked in 93 runs while Hodges has collected 31 homers and driven in 120 runs and walloped the ball at a .303 clip during the regular season. Both are eager to stone for poor showings in last year's series with the Yankees. Yankees Meet Sox Yankees Manager Casey Stengel meanwhile, indicated that his champions' post-clinching rest period was ended with the announcement... Herman, listening with a group of sportswriters, cracked: "Times sure have changed, haven't they, Fellahs?" It's a Bison Conservation corner: There never has been a buffalo in North America, our so-called buffalo being a bison season (Paging "Bison Bill" Cody)... Navy's All America guard, Steve Eisenhauer, is a good student. The reason is obvious. When he attended Sheffield, Pa., high school, his mother was the math teacher, and his pop was the principal ... and, as for talent running in the family, William and Mary's John (Jeep) Bednarik is a younger brother of former Penn All America center, Chuch Bednarik... Skull and Crossbones Maybe this one has whiskers, but it's news to me so I'll pass it along. Seems that last spring, some of the Yankees were watching the Tampa, Fla., "Gasparilla Day" celebration, which memoralizes the pirates who once infested southern Florida. All the boats in the flotilla naturally are decorated with the pirate skull and crossbones. Somebody asked Yogi Berra if he knew what the insignia stood for and Yogi nodded confidently. "Certainly," Yogi snapped. "Iodine!" Stars' Dale Long Voted PCL's MVP LOS ANGELES (UP)-Dale Long, Hollywood first baseman-outfielder, today held the title of the Pacific Coast League's most valuable player for 1953. The league's baseball writers selected Long yesterday. He was credited with playing a major role in the Stars' second straight PCL championship. The lanky player led the league in home runs with 35 four-baggers and also led in the RBI department with 116 runs. Long played his first season in the coast loop after sojourns with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the New Orleans Pelicans. Jack Tobin of Seattle was runner-up. Havana Swimmer Takes To Catalina Channel At 7 P.M. Tonight CATALINA ISLAND (UP)—Bernardo Martinez, young swimming champion from Havana, will battle the Catalina channel tonight. Furillo has blasted out 21 homers and knocked in 93 runs while Hodges has collected 31 homers and driven in 120 runs and walloped the ball at a .303 clip during the regular season. Both are eager to stone for poor showings in last year's series with the Yankees. Yankees Meet Sox Yankees Manager Casey Stengel meanwhile, indicated that his champions' post-clinching rest period was ended with the announcement that the regulars would take over for the upper-berth kids beginning with today's opener in Boston with the Red Sox. With the two flag winners preoccupied with preparing for the series, the main interest for the moment centered around the Milwaukee Braves' attempt to establish a new National League attendance record. The Braves began a three-game series with the Cincinnati Redlegs needing only 49,623 paid admissions to eclipse the record of 1,807,526 admissions set by the Dodgers in 1947. The Cuban will attempt to cross from Fisherman's cove to the mainland. He has charted a straight course which he hopes will land him at Cabrillo Beach. San Pedro, early tomorrow morning. Miranda Jr., has arranged to ride in one of the convoying yachts as an official observer, since his government named Martinez as the national representative of Cuba in the latest assault on the treacherous channel. Smith highly commended the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce for its accomplishments in bringing industry to the city, and spoke of the well organized plans being carried out by the city officials for their continued beautification and far sighted community planning.
