Van Hoorebeke Tells Optimist Club,
"Current Team Slow Shaping Up"
by HAL THOMAS
Last night was "football night" at the regular Thursday meeting of the Anaheim Optimist Club, with AUHS Coach Clare Van Hoorebeke as guest speaker of the evening. He was accompanied by two varsity stars, Mike Troop and Dean Philpott, members of this year's squad.
Idaho's Coach Curtman Happiest in PGC Loop
By RUSSELL NIELSEN
MOSCOW, Ida. — The Idaho Vandals won't represent the Pacific Coast Conference in the Rose Bowl New Year's Day, and that's just fine with Head Coach Raymund Babe Curtman.
The Babe rates as about the luckiest coach in the loop, even though he can boast of no All American cogs in his grid machine, because all the Vandahlville folks ask him to do is to turn out a fighting team that plays a good game and may come up with an occasional upset.
The genial mentor thinks maybe he can do just that. He has 22 lettermen returning, and only five of them are seniors. Indications are the Vandals will operate again from the split T formation and variations. This will enable his platoon of backs to use their speed and deception on offense. Defensively the squad shapes up as being better than last year when Idaho tied a national record by blocking nine punts.
Experienced Line
Four of those five seniors are in the line, which will have an average weight just shy of 200 pounds.
Van Hoorebeke went into considerable detail regarding the quality of this year's ball club. He pointed out that in his three years at Anaheim, all three teams played hard and went all-out to win; he feels that this year's team has not yet caught the "win-fever" so necessary to a successful season.
"All of my former teams, at Anaheim, have shown terrific spirit and refused to quit. If they were unable to match quality with their opponents, they scrapped all the harder and waited for their share of the breaks", said Van Hoorebeke.
Van went on to point out that, "The citizens, and particularly the service clubs should get behind the community's need for an adequate football field and stadium, and until there is some civic spirit shown in this matter, the responsible official will not deem it necessary to correct the present lack of proper facilities."
The speaker stressed the importance of athletic training for youngsters. "We teach our athletes to be good losers' as well as good winners; to be gentlemen on campus or off. I am proud to inform you that, last year, we had but one varsity football player on the de-merit list, and I was inclined to question the justification in that case. Some parents do not want their kids to play football; why, I do not know. If the youngsters want to play football, they will do it in unorganized paly, without parental knowledge, and without proper equipment or train-

Four of those five seniors are in the line, which will have an average weight just shy of 200 pounds. They are guards Tom Falash and Ray Paraca, end Bruce West and center Mel Bertrand, the captain. But the line will be anchored by 220-pound Burdette Hess, a junior who is billed as perhaps the finest tackle Idaho ever has produced. Other starting linemen probably will be juniors Rog Randalph at right tackle and Lou Mendiola at right end.
In the backfield, Curtman has a fine group of runners and he thinks his offense will be at least as good as last season's. He said they'll throw the ball about as often as they'll run with it.
George Eldam, a junior, will get the starting call at quarterback, a spot where the Babe would like to have more experience. Junior Wayne and sophomore Bob Haines also will see plenty of action at the signal-calling spot.
San Jose First
The fullblack chores will be handled by either Bob Lee or Flip Kleffner. Lee is a senior.
Jay Buhler, expert at kicking points, will start at right half and Dick Pickett at left half.

NEW YORK (UP)—The most frequently asked question in sports today is, "Who do you like?" and Fearless Fraley's fearful answer is, "The Brooklyn Dodgers."
Picking against the New York Yankees in the World Series is about as sulcidal as walking across Times Square blindfolded.
But an old saying which seems applicable in this case is that even a blind pig will find an acorn once in a while.
Certainly the Dodgers have been hammy enough in five trips to the well to date; drawing a complete blank in the victory department. And if they're ever going to win one, this should be it.

Certainly the Dodgers have been hammy enough in five trips to the well to date, drawing a complete blank in the victory department. And if they're ever going to win one, this should be it.
Pitching is supposed to be the piece de resistance of any baseball game. But when you come to a short, violent series such as this post-season match, the four most important ingredients usually are power, speed, defense and luck.
On the first three, Brooklyn has a decided edge.
Considering power first, the Dodger starting lineup has a .307 batting average with five of the eight men hitting over .300. That gives Brooklyn quite an edge, about 19 points over the Yankees' mass .286 plus average and only three men in the .300 class.
In the matter of speed, the Yankees aren't composed of nine Ernie Lombardis. Guys like Mikey Mantle, Hank Bauer and Joe Collins; for instance, can run with Native Dancer. But the Yankee eight have stolen only 21 bases this season, against 70 for the Dodger starters. Which means the fleet Brooks are a running team, and that kind of outfit can mean trouble as the St. Louis Cards of 1942 showed these same Yankees.
Defensively, the Yanks are no better than fourth in the American League with a .978 average. The Brooks are atop the National League with a .980 mark.
And now, I suppose, the Yanks will win in four straight!

Says Joe in the Pageant letter,
"No need for me to tell you how tough it is making money fighting. You know: The first fight with Jersey Joe Walcott, the one in which you won the title in the 13th round should have taught you that. Guess I didn't learn fast enough. My money went pretty fast. It don't have to go that fast.
It ain't easy being the Champ."
Joe continues, "A lot of guys that never would know, you if you didn't get to own the title come around. They try to use you for a sucker."
"I guess we fighters gotta lot more between us than the punch on the jaw you knocked me out with. We come up the hard way. I worked hard in factories and carrying ice and coal before I went into fighting. You worked hard too. It ain't velvet working digging ditches and in shoe factories. I never looked back on my laboring days and worried about it. I knew it fit me for fighting."
"The fact that you're heavyweight champion proves that you've got a good manager. The fact that he brought you all the way to the top proves you must listen to him all the way. A lot people will come around and whisper they could make more money for you than your manager. Don't pay them mind."
"But the most important thing" concludes Joe, "-when you think you are through with fighting hang your gloves away. It's an easy mistake to think you can keep on fighting, past your time. You can't. When the time comes for you to retire, just walk away from it all. Let them remember you as the Champ."

Bruin-Beaver Game Tonight Opens
PCC Return to One-Platoon Football
LOS ANGELES, CALIF.—Intercollegiate football, the game which once again features the all-around player rather than the specialist, returns to Los Angeles this Friday night (Sept. 18) when UCLA's Bruins host the Oregon State Beavers in the 1953-Pacific Coast Conference opener.
A crowd of 45,000 fans is expected to be on hand for the 8:30 p.m. kickoff in the Memorial Coliseum.
Coach Kip Taylor's underdog Beavers figure to come to town, all fired up to battle the team which is generally picked to go to the Rose Bowl this season. Oregon State always opens the season at full speed and is capable of giving the Bruins a still opening test.
Coach Red Sanders is reminding his Bruins that it was this Oregon State team which was unlucky to lose a heartbreaking 17-14 decision to Michigan State, the nation's No. 1 ranking team, in an early-season game last year.
The Beavers will throw a big rugged line against the Bruins, a line which averages 18 pounds more per man than the UCLA forward wall. The Oregon State line, anchored by a pair of standout guards in Captain LaVerne Ferguson and Bill Johnson and a fine pivotman in Joe Fulwyer, averages 216 pounds as compared to 198 for the Bruins.
