CHAPTER TWENTY
AS MANNING lay there dozing, the door thrust inward, but no lantern light showed. Beyond the door was the night, moonlit, he saw now, but unattainable, blocked by the high silhouette of a man. Laura came awake and asked sleepily, "Who's that?" and Gal's soft voice spoke, probing the cellar, "Manning—?"
Gal groped forward in the darkness, and the surprising thing was that he knelt and fumbled at the knots, and shortly Manning felt himself freed. At first he merely sat, not comprehending what was shown on Gal's temple where the skin had been broken, and flood trickled along Gal's lean jaw. The consciousness had gone out of the man, but not the hate; it was there still on the fired face.
Cautiously Manning came into the dark cellar and knowing what Laura's fear would be, he said quickly, "It's me — Cole." He groped to her and began working at the rope. He was wooden fingered, slow at the job, and the knots were stubborn.
Laura asked, "What happened?"
He made it short. "He wanted a chance at me, gun to gun."
take it easy till you're in the clear. They keep a dog on the place. He must be in the barn, or he'd be nosing around here by now. Watch yourself."
"I will."
Manning crept to the house. He got one hand against the wall and groped along it toward that door that gave to the stairs. He took each step carefully.
He let himself through the doorway and put his foot to the staircase. He gained the top and found himself in a hallway as dark as the cellar had been. He groped almost until his fingers touched a knot.
AS MANNING lay there oozing the door thrust inward, but no lantern light showed. Beyond the door was the night, moonlit, he saw now, but unattainable, blocked by the high silhouette of a man. Laura came awake and asked sleepily, "Who's that?" and Gal soft voice spoke, probing the cellar, "Manning—?"
Gal groped forward in the darkness, and the surprising thing was that he knelt and fumbled at the knots, and shortly Manning felt himself freed. At first he merely sat, not comprehending what was expected of him.
"Stand up," Gal ordered, "and step outside."
Manning did so.
Gal stood high shouldered in the moonlight, his face a silvery mask. "I've walked the yard till I've nearly worn out my boots. I've thought it over from every angle, and there's only one way. The two of us ride into the basin tonight, Manning. Somewhere we'll have it out, gun to gun."
Manning said, "So you've found a way to satisfy yourself without tangling Torgin into it. But still you're only half smart, Gal. What will any part of this game get you? You could turn around and cut Laura loose, too. The law would remember that."
Gal said, "How did you like it in the dark, mister, with the walls crowding you? How would you have liked it for thousands of nights? Now do you understand what one Manning did to me?"
Manning shook his head. "You pack a hate a long time, mister." "There's more to it than you know," Gal said. "The rest I'll tell you when I've let you load that gun. He walked forward a few paces ahead of Manning. He looked back. Hurry up. I've got horses saddled and waiting."
Manning said, "I'd like to oblige you—but again he was remembering Laura. He looked up at that one glowing window in the ranch-house and knew that whatever chance could be made from this madness of Gal's would have to be fashioned here and now. He matched his empty gun out then and hurried it straight at Gal's head. Pity stirred in Manning, and a certain remorse that such an act was necessary.
He saw the man go down, and he ran forward across the short distance between them and looked at the crumpled figure. Blood
