AUHS Coaches Gratified with First Week’s Work; Spirit, Morale High
By HAL THOMAS
"Old Sol" has had a 220 pound line on the field every day this week, up until the time this went to press, and the AUHS variety football hopefuls haven’t yet found a penetrable hole in the old boy’s 110 degree defenses.
In spite of the abominable heat, the kids have been “peering it on”, much to the satisfaction of coaches Van Hoorebeke, Wallin, and Hicks.
There can be little doubt that training under such conditions may seem rugged, however, the team will round into shape much faster, and come kickoff time in the opening game, the boys will be in great shape.
Time Out
The coaches took time out Thursday to evaluate the candidates as they have shown in the first four days, and if they were to play tonight, the following team would be in at the opening whistle.

Cantrell Wins Grand Prix at Long Beach
Bill Cantrell, local mdget driver, won the 100-lap "Grand Prix" last night at Long Beach Memorial stadium.
Cantrell did not move into contention until the 50th lap, and it was on the 81st lap that he wheeled into first position, as Don Cameron, in first place, driving Doug Carourthers car, blew a head gasket, burning up his motor.
Anahiem's bid for the one-two positions in the feature race appeared a cinch until Cameron's motor blew up.

Coach Jess Hill said there would not be any rough stuff after Monday because he wants to make sure all his boys will be ready for their Washington State opener.
The Trojan's junior varsity, stimulating SC's opponents yesterday drew Washington State formations at the first and second teams.
LOS ANGELES (UP)—Tiny Priko Villanueva, slated as understudy to UCLA tailback Paul Cameron, threatened today to give cameron a lot of competition for the first string spot.
Villanueva outshined the Bruin star during yesterday's two-hour scrimmage, averaging 10 yards per try on each of six times he carried the ball. He completed out of 10 passes attempted and parked the second team to three touchdowns.
Cameron scored once and was held to a four yard average and completed only five out of 12 pass attempts.

Look Out Joe
The right end position is not sewed up by any means. Vasques has had two years of JV ball, and off this experience, he could be hard to move out. IF, it were not for a couple of rugged boys who have their eyes on the same territory.
Ray VanDerWarker also has two years of JV experience under his belt, and is undoubtedly as fast as any man on the squad. Off last year, his defensive ability is well recognized, and if he proves to the bosman that he has "sticky fingers"—LOOK OUT JOE!
There's also a guy up from the Bees that might "dark-horse" both Jeans and Ray. Verne Weaver is strong and willing, besides having football blood in his veins. It's Bill Cantrell, local midget driver, won the 100-lap "Grand Prix" last night at Long Beach Memorial stadium.
Cantrell did not move into contention until the 50th lap, and it was on the 81st lap that he wheeled into first position, as Don Cameron, in first place, driving Doug Carouthers car, blew a head gasket, burning up his motor.
Anaheim's bid for the one-two positions in the feature race appeared a cinch until Cameron's motor blew up.
Jack Jordan was second and Van Johnson, the latter, formerly of Anaheim, took third.
Jack Pringle was the victim of a serious accident in the semimain event as his car flipped over three times. Pringle's safety belt held, and although in serious condition, he is expected to recover. Lowel Southam won the event.
Local Juniors Out of Southwest Tennis Meet
Anaheim's junior tennis players were eliminated yesterday in the second day of play in the Pacific Southwest Tennis Championships. Jean Williams and her partner, Joan Borchard of Ornard, made the best showing in the girls' 18 and under doubles as they forced Sandra Veenboer and Mary Ellen Stanko of Monroe to the limit, olsing 9-11, 6-2, 7-5. The match had been called because of darkness on Thursday with the score tied at 7-7 in the set.
In singles Miss Williams ran into real trouble in Laurie Mack of San Marino, last year's top ranking player in Southern California in the 13-and-under singles group, losing 6-1, 6-1.
Don Klisa, boys' 13-and-under singles, lost to fourth seeded Warren E. Sisson, Jr., of Santa Monica, 6-0, 6-1. Karen Lenain was eliminated by Miss Borchard 6-3, 6-3.

From Rose Bowl Champs to National Champs in '53" Quoth Trojan Alumni
Note to editors: This is the fifth in a series of articles dealing with the 1953 prospects of west coast college football teams.
By ALEX KAHN
Los Angeles 49—Students of football who tend to discount southern California's incentive to this year because the Trojans are inelegible to return to the Rose bowl, underestimate both the team and the school's alumni.
To give the Trojans an incense, if they need one, the alumni opted the slogan, "from Rose bowl champs to National champs '53".
The three men who largely were responsible for getting Southern California into the Rose Bowl through their performance in the CCLA game last year, Jim Sears, Carmichael and Elmer Willis, are gone, along with a half dozen other top performers.
But with 22 lettermen still on the squad of more than 70 players, coach Jess Hill knows whereof he speaks when he says his boys should be "real tough" provided they get past the first four games, and many a rival coach isn't a mere they won't be rough right from the start.
With Sears and Rudy Bukich both gone, Hill must develop a top back if the Trojan warhorse is in move. His candidates are Arais Dandoy and Jim Decker. The former can pass and the latter can run. And one or the other should do the job.
Just Adequate
But aside from that weakness, it is one, Southern California adequate at all positions and keep with strength at most. Perhaps their greatest assets are at spring practice the team showed more deception than it did all last year. But the Trojans need to be good to get through a schedule of 10 games which includes seven conference foes and Notre Dame, Minnesota and Indiana outside the conference.
The schedule:
Sept. 19—Washington State at Pullman.
Sept. 26—Minnesota at Los Angeles.
Oct. 2—Indiana at Los Angeles (night).
Oct. 10—Washington at Seattle.
Oct. 17—Oregon State at Los Angeles.
Oct. 24—California at Berkeley.
Oct. 31—Oregon at Portland.
Nov. 7—Stanford at Los Angeles.
Nov. 21—UCLA at Los Angeles.
Nov. 28—Notre Dame at Los Angeles.

NEW YORK (UP)—Pearless Fraley's facts and figures:
Indiana University protests that there is "nothing irregular" about the admission of Olympic decathlon runnerup Mitch Campbell, who is widely recognized as a non-Olympic student.
Maybe it will come as news to the Big Ten, which always is protesting low scholastic standards in other suspect conferences, but Indiana says it has a rule which allows admittance of students with "lower" scholastic levels if they are sponsored by a faculty member.
Okay Subsidy Payments For Raisin Exports
BAN FRANCISCO (UP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced today its approval of subsidy payments on 117 tons of raisins for commercial export.
The local Branch of the department said these first subsidy payments cover 115 tons of Golden Bleachad and two tons of Natural Thompson Seedless raisins.
The payments will be made under the 1953-54 program. Subsidy payments under last year's program came to an end Aug. 31 when the department approved export payments on an additional 71-2 tons of Natural Thompson Seedless raisins.
Total tonnage of raisins approved for export payment between Oct. 15, 1952 through Aug. 31, 1953, includes: Natural Thompson Seedless, 75,137 tons; Golden Bleachad, 11,922; Bullanas, 243; Muscats, 22; Zante Currants, 605.
The total includes subsidy payments approved on 37,929 tons of raisins for commercial export and on 50,000 tons of surplus raisins sold to the United Kingdom.

Just Adequate
But aside from that weakness, it is one, Southern California adequate at all positions and deep with strength at most. Perhaps their greatest assets are at ends, where Ron Miller and Tom Nickoloff could be the class of the conference and among the best in the nation.
Inside the ends, Hill could field line made up of Mario Da Re and Ed Fouch at the tackles; Ed Succi and George Timberlake at the guards; and Dick Petty at center. All of these are backed up with strength from the top defensive line in the west.
And aside from a possible question about the key tailback position, Southern California is deep in talent in the backfield. At full-back, for example, they can start with Leon Sellers, follow up with sensational 'Addison Hawthorne' and spell them with Harold Han.
At wingback, capable Lindon Crow is backed up by Bob Buckley and Ron Calabris, while at quarterback George Bosanic is a standout.
Southern California's greatest trouble last year was its lack of sustained offense. The Trojans did more scoring on pass interceptions than they did on marches down the field. It was rugged football but it can't be counted on to work with a single platoon style of play.
To overcome that weakness, the Trojans added George Ceithaml from Michigan as backfield coach and he was quick to install the Wolverine style of trickery. In PCL Standings

Amazing Comeback
This time you can't blame it on an eager football coach...Campbell, a one-man track team, was sponsored by Indiana's track coach...
Ted Williams figures that his amazing comeback with the Boston Red Sox is due to several factors. One reason is that the left arm which he injured in the All Star game a few years back feels "right" for the first time. Another is that he insists he always has been a hot weather hitter, plus the fact that he is physically fresher than the pitcher...What ever the reason, it's nice to see.
Trouble Among Giants
Notre Dame's football team must be really loaded from the way Master Frank Leahy is weeping. Observing the flood of practice injuries, ineligibilities and his tough schedule, the Iachrymose Leahy claimed: "It is the most depressing coaching situation we have ever been confronted with at Notre Dame."...He's still the young Casey Stengel of the gridiron...
There is a lot of discontent among the New York giants, a half dozen players claiming they can't give their best for Leo Durocher. The uphot apparently will be a wholesale housecleaning such as Billy Southworth did at Boston when his team fell apart after winning a pennant...With a new two-year contract, it's a cinch Leo isn't leaving—yet...
