County Cancer Group Schedules Met Monday The Orange County Branch of the American Cancer Society will review the year's accomplishment in the fight against cancer, when they hold their Annual Meeting Monday, Sept. 14 at the Greenbrier Restaurant, Garden Grove. Dr. Michael B. Shimkin speaking on "Cancer Research - Where and Whither?" will be the speaker at this dinner meeting. Dr. Shimkin is director of the Laboratory of Experimental Oncology at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco. To his laboratory come Cancer's "hopeless" victims - patients who volunteer themselves as human guinea pig for the testing of scores of possible weapons against cancer, according to Basil Twist, President of the Orange County Brach of the Cancer Society. Although not one of the hundreds of patients who have come to the laboratory have been saved, many have had their lives prolonged and the pain eased. The laboratory is the only one of its kind west of New York City, according to Mr. Twist. It has tested a great variety of drugs and methods of treatment, often in collaboration with scientists from other parts of the world. Because he is constantly in touch with other leading researchers, Dr. Shimkin is completely abreast of activities in the cancer research field. Twist said. The Cancer Society's meeting is open to the public, with dinner served promptly at 7:30.Dinner is $3.00 per plate and those wishing to attend should make reservations not later than Friday, September 11 by calling the Branch Office at DR. Y. (UP)—Tony Trabert, 23, of Cincinnati, who routed Wimbledon champion Vic Seixas for the U. S. tennis crown, is convinced he and Vic can bring back the Davis Cup from Australia. And if they do, they're virtually certain to team up again to defend it in 1954 because the slugging Cincinnati star is in no hurry to turn pro. "There's plenty of time for that," said Tony. "I have a year and a half of schooling to finish at the University of Cincinnati and plenty more to learn about this game of tennis." Shortly after Maureen (Little Mo) Connolly of San Diego whipped Doris Hart of Coral Gables, Fla., 6-2, 6-4 for her third straight women's crown. Trabert proceeded with a set plan of attack and completely overpowered Seixas, 6-3, 6-2 the title won the two previous year. 6-3, retiring to the United States by Frank Sedgman of Australia. Miss Connolly won as she pleased against Miss Hart, who was playing in her fifth losing final round match.
