Use Stocks for Winter Garden Color
A bed of stocks planted now guarantees cut flowers in abundance for fall and winter bloom.
Few annuals produce such a pleasing and prolific show of color as does this old stand-by of proven merit. The modern planting of stock can be even showier now, according to the Bedding Plant Advisory Board, by making use of the trysomic high percentage double flowered stock that now comes close to 100 percent double.
Stocks are generally strong growers and should be set at the back portion of a flower bed. Spacing the plants one foot apart will allow room for them to develop to maximum size. In loose sandy soil it is wise precaution to stake them as they uproot readily from a stiff wind. Type of soil is little bother, but a fairly sunny location is a must.
Beds for stock should be raised as good drainage is essential. Poor drainage will cause the plants to rot out. Some lime should be added to the soil if peat or leaf mold are present, as stock is allergic to acid soil.
Good companion plants for planting with stock are in supply now, Calendula, nemesia, schizanthus, or Iceland poppy grow a step shorter and bloom along with the stock. Good border plants for such a bed would be pansy, viola, primula macoides or dwarf dusty miller.

Planners Seek County Land Use Amendment
SANTA ANA—Animal husbandry projects as part of school or farm education programs received encouragement when the Orange County Planning Commission adopted a resolution to ask amendment of the county land use ordinance to permit reduction of fees.
Proposed by farm organizations, the fee for variance applications for agricultural education or school projects would be only $1 instead of the $25 required for usual variances.
The planners also approved tract maps providing for more than 275 new homesites in the county.
