More Trouble For Young Highwayman
Hearing on a petition asking for probation for Roy Lane, convicted by a jury of being a member of an assorted candid gang that held up J. R. Mayer, Santa Ana bank official, on the highway north of Fullerton two months ago was continued today by Superior Judge Z. B. West for one week. In the meantime, the court indicated, preparations might be made for sending Lane, who is but 16 years old, to the Preston school of industry.
W. A. Neuteboom, asserted leader, is under sentence to spend 20 years at San Quentin, while Jack Lee, after receiving a five-year prison sentence was released temporarily to Los Angeles authorities who are to press charges of highway robbery of two physicians there the same night the prisoner was arrested by Anaheim police, who said they were attempting to rob a stage driver.
Virginia Hymer, fourth member of the party, was released at the trial last week, on motion of the prosecution. Though she is but 18 years old, her husband in Los Angeles this week started action to obtain a divorce from her, alleging infidelity.
EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD
GETS OFF EASY
Glenn Duffy, of Costa Mesa, 18, and married, was sentenced to one year in the county jail by Superior Judge Z. B. West at Santa Ana today, after receiving Duffy’s admission that he had illicit relations with a young married woman of that city. In order to save Duffy from San Quentin, the prosecution erased the word “married” from the portion of the information relating to the woman involved, the change making the offense a misdemeanor instead of a felony.
