NEW CANYON PAVEMENT HELPS
Mill Creek, City Cree Roads Open, Says National Club
Opening of Santa Ana canyon last Sunday revealed to motorists of No. Orange co., something of what the county is doing to improve this thoroughfare. Perhaps the principal feature of betterment is that of addin; shoulders of four feet width to each side of the road.
Laying of a piece of concrete paving for a short distance beyond Olive is another improvement.
Riverside-co's concrete aphalt, which has been placed over the asphalt thru a large part of the canyon, is a very distinct change for the better.
Curves gradually are being eliminated or widened throut the canyon.
The Mill Creek and City Creek Roads to Big Bear Lake are scheduled to be open now, depending upon conditions, according to the National Auto Club. At the present time the only route available to Bear Valley is via the desert through Victoryville, which is in good condition. Both the Hesperia and Waterman Canyon routes
Gas Tax Act Not Yet Signed, Word
Governor F. W. Richardson will not sign the Breed 3-cent gas tax bill until next Wednesday or Thursday.
In the meantime it behooves Anaheimers and Anaheim organizations interested to write him, and present their objections to this bill becoming law.
The arguments against the bill have been reiterated in these columns... ad nauseam.
The oil companies oppose it as unfair; the motoring public is hit unnecessarily because sufficient funds already are on hand, and the South would be discriminated against in division of the additional revenue.
'BETTER STREETS' IS NEW SLOGAN
A new slogan "better streets" is now supplementing the world-famous guiding line, "Good Roads" according to the traffic planning and safety committee of the Automobile C. of C. of the United States.
"We have been so busy boosting highways to take a man from one city to another that we have given no thought to what happens when he gets there." reads a dispatch in regard to the better street movement received by the Automobile Club of Southern California.
Motor car manufacturers have been so engrossed in "next year" model, the communication points out, that they have given no heed to the "last generation streets" it will have to run on. Most city streets today are built on the 1682 model designed by William
TAX REPEAT SOUGHT BY MOTORISTS
Pre-War Levies Longer Warranted It Is Declared
Repeal of the pre-wartime taxes on motor vehicles and piles is still being urgently asked motorists throut the country, cording to communications to Automobile Club of Southern California.
These sales taxes amount to average of $31 for each automobile, according to calculation of the U.S. Treasury department. Arguments that have brought forward against the duties state that they represent a special tax which is criminatory; that it puts a burden on transportation, that most of the other items specially treat wartime measures have been freed from these burdens and that the automobile has come a subject largely of saturation which function is being exercised in most states.
Motor clubs, farm organization and automobile manufacture generally have expressed opposition against this tax, and most exists everywhere are still main every effort to obtain a repeal this federal excise tax.

At the present time the only route available to Bear Valley is via the desert through Victoryville, which is in good condition. Both the Hesperia and Waterman Canyon routes to Arrowhead Lake are in excellent condition at the present time. Chains are advisable after rains.
That portion of Long Beach Blvd. in Southgate extending south from the Southern Pacific tracks to the southern city limits will be closed for at least 60 days more, according to recent advice to the National Auto Club. This is due to the fact that the old cement pavement in the center of the boulevard is being removed and this operation is a tedious one. The following detour is suggested. East from Long Beach Blvd. on Santa Ana street to State street, south on State street to Tweedy road, west on Tweedy road to Long Beach Blvd. This detour furnishes a payed boulevard the entire distance with the exception of approximately one-half mile between Southern avenue and Tweedy street.
The motorist in Southern California pays only from one-third to one-half of the premiums on insurance on his car that his brother in the eastern states does, according to reports from the insurance department of the Automobiles' Club of Southern California.
A Class Ad will bring you results.

Motor car manufacturers have been so engrossed in "nest year" model, the communication points out, that they have given no heed to the "last generation streets" it will have to run on. Most city streets today are built on the 1682 model, devised by William Penn in Philadelphia, where he put in the first checkerboard street system says the dispatch.
City engineers in the larger cities could eliminate the most serious traffic difficulties with adequate funds and public support, it is pointed out. This movement is considered with special interest by the club now the largest of its kind in the world, which has long had "Good Roads" as its slogan.
California has more national parks, national monuments and forests than any other state in the union.

Dear Charlie:
I've had a new thrill. Of course you've heard of Harlan Fengler, the man who was leading the field in the racing game until a serious accident turned his thoughts to selling.
He took me out in his Gardner Super Eight. Now you know I'm no babe in the wood when it comes to cars. I've STEP-PED ON A GOOD MANY THROTTLES but never have I had an experience such as Harlan gave me.
"Start her up," I said when I jumped in. He laughed—"The engine is going already, but you can't hear it!" Then he touched the plush-lined gear (that's what it seemed like) and we headed for hills that made me gasp. Ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five per cent. grades ON HIGH, one after the other. Such vibrationless power, such acceleration, such perfect control I have never seen before. Young Fengler surely opened my eyes to new motor standards.
He tells me this is the answer: Tremendous Gardner resources, plus years of motor car leadership, plus a vibrationless 75-hp motor, (eight cylinders in line) plus balloon tires and enclosed four-wheel brakes.
That's why they call it a TALL automobile—It's head and shoulders above the crowd.
Yours Jack
P. S. And they tell me the new Gardner SIX is just as much a wonder as the Super-8.

APRIL OFFENCES MOSTLY SPEEDING
During April there were 181 arrests for speeding at intersections in Anaheim, according to Judge Charles Kuchel. Practically all the traffic violations were of this type, infractions of the parking ordinance being cut now to a minimum.
In the business section 15 miles an hour is the maximum speed permitted and in the residence sections 20 miles.
L. A. Traffic “Cop” Praises Gardner
A few days ago a member of the Frahm Oldmobile Co., Anaheim Gardner representative, was driving in Los Angeles, and stopped to ask a question of Officer Clifford Keeland of the Hollywood division. They fell into conversation will the result that the traffic policeman unwound a tale that sounded like a hymn of praise such as one might expect to hear at a voodoo prayer meeting.
The officer outlined that he purchased his Gardner car in January, 1923. Since that time he has driven it 35,562 miles with an economy record that would gratify the heart and pocket book of the most frugal Scotchman. He's still traveling on two of the original tires, and has averaged 18 to 22 miles per gallon over roads representing every motoring condition to be found west of the Rockles. Included in that mileage was a trip over the Arrowhead trail from Los Angeles to Blackfoot, Idaho. Mrs Keeland accompanied her husband on the journey which was accomplished.
APRIL PROVES REMARKABLE MONTH
Deliveries of Several Local Dealers Show Great Improvement
April was a remarkable month for several local auto concerns. Sid McGraw delivered 40 cars and tractors during the month of which 25 were new, the best record in 18 months and believed by McGraw to be the best in the county.
Harry L. Turton delivered three Oakland sedans, four coaches and two touring cars, besides an unusually large number of used cars. T. D McKeehan, manager of his used car market is given credit by Turton for the excellent showing in the latter case.
Charles H. Mann delivered five new cars and five or six used cars. The Frahm Oldmobile Co. delivered two de luxe sedans, two de luxe coaches, and two tourings, besides six used cars.
H. R Grove of Anaheim and Fullerton sold 17 new Hudsons and Essexes and 21 used cars, the best month in the history of his business.
Craig and Hauser sold four new Chrysolites, three new Maxwells and five used cars.

Though Dodge Bros. Motor are now being built at the of 1,100 a day, both delivery and new orders are some 200 in excess of production. Dealers stocks permitted, number of deliveries for the week would have been even earlier,” said John A. Nichols Jr., president in charge of sales, not a spurt, but a steady, ful climb.
SPEED 15 MILES
FIRST 1200 MILES
There are many ways of breaking in an engine, because some engines are tighter than others; and the way an engine is broken in determines its performance to a large extent during its entire life.
One Anaheim businessman is wearing down his rings in a most careful manner. He has driven his Essex coach only around 2,200 miles. During the first 300 miles he drove it at 15 miles an hour or less. Then for the next two or three hundred miles he increased his speed two or three miles. But he didn’t exceed 20 miles up to the 1,200 mile mark.
Even now he doesn’t exceed 25 miles.
As a result he has one of the sweetest motors, he declares, that anybody would want.
This man regards it as a mistake to increase the speed markedly even after the established 1,000 miles or more has been exceeded, and intends still to increase his speed only by slow degrees.
WHITAKER LIKES SECLUDED ROADS
Thirty-nine years ago J. H. Whitaker, Postmaster, used to drive cattle for his uncle, James Whitaker, who owned a ranch of more than 1,000 acres at Buena Park.
Now, almost every Sunday, Whitaker, who is fond of getting off the beaten track on his drives, picks out some road across a pasture which he hasn’t driven over for years or at all, and goes on a voyage of discovery. In this way he is constantly treating himself and Mrs. Whitaker to new scenes.
Last Sunday he drove thru Brea canyon to Valley boulevard and on the way toward Pomona took the first dirt road to the left. All the way to Covina he went and then on the San Dimas and Pomona, returning by way of the boulevard again.
WRECKING CAR?
NOTIFY STATE
When an automobile has outlived its usefulness and is wrecked, various parts are generally sold or melted up.
However, all license plates and registration certificates remain and frequently, when secured by automobile thieves and substituted for those taken from a stolen car, give the thieves an apparently clear title to the stolen machine.
However, the new bill passed at the recent session of the legislature provides that all wreckers must notify the police and state motor vehicle department of their intention to wreck the car and give the motor number and other essential information. Then when the car is wrecked, the plates and registration certificates must be returned to the State Motor Vehicle Department at Sacramento and the car stricken from the State’s roster.
LICENSE NOT REQUIRED

Rock Inscriptions May Reveal History of Spanish Occupation
What do you know about the history of the early Spanish in the southwest?
If you have any data on this subject, the touring bureau of the automobile Club of Southern California and the U.S. department of the Interior would like to have it. Especially do they want anything pertaining to inscriptions on El Morro Rock in El Morro National Monument near Gallup, New Mexico.
These ancient writings carved on the rocks were discovered in 1849 by two U.S. army officers.
Investigations by scouts of the touring bureau of the club indicate that these inscriptions are the only known records of the Spanish occupation of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Complete data is desired, and the co-operation of the U. of C. history department has been sought to obtain all existing data. Many inquiries regarding these inscriptions come to the club and it is hoped that by sending out an SOS to the public, some student of early history in California will be found who can throw some light on the facts now veiled in mystery.

What battery he will take on in place of the Willard, A. Bevillard of the Anaheim Ignition Depot had not decided this week. Bevillard has handled the Willard during the past thirteen years and is one of the most experienced battermen in the entire county.
The battery he does represent will be one which in point of value will be well worth public confidence, Bevillard declared.

TIRES, TUBES GO UP 10 P.C.
Better Product, Costlier Materials Responsible, Says Local Trade
Nominally effective yesterday, but actually on Tuesday, practically all of the standard make tires are increased in price, an average of 10 per cent. California-made tires, or most of them, which in the four-inch size were boosted 10 per cent one or two weeks ago, will advance another 10 per cent before the month is over on all sizes, it is reported.
In fact, by the end of May, all tires will be up 20 per cent, according to local retailers and casmo.
Rubber has been selling at 42 cents a pound, and long staple cotton also is up. Cost of materials combined with the fact that a better product will be turned out account for the increase.
Already some makes of balloons and semi-balloon tires are being made in six miles instead of four, for the simple reason that the latter did not stand up and gave the whole line a bad name.
