EXPECT 200,000 SUMMER TOURISTS Travel to So. Calif. this summer will be the largest on record. C. S. Browne, general agent of the Union Pacific at Santa Ana, told the Plain Dealer yesterday. Approximately fifty conventions are expected on the coast and the Shriners' gathering at Los Angeles alone will be responsible for 80 special trains. By rail alone 200,-000 tourists are expected. Accompanying Browne was E. F. Deigert, assistant general passenger agent from Los Angeles. Browne distributed copies of a new beautifully illustrated circular on Zion National Park, which is another remarkable piece of work. Hal G. Evarts in one of the prominent weekly publications said of Zion Canyon: "The rock formations were nuite the most bewildering and fantastic that human eyes have seen. One could stand in one spot and pick the likeness of any known object or animal from a battleship to a flea." Slayer Pomeroy Seeks Freedom (By International News Service.) BOSTON, April 29. Jease H. Pomeroy, famous life-term prisoner, is making another try for freedom. After serving forty-nine years in State prison here, entering the prison as a boy of sixteen, the gray-haired man has appealed to Governor Fuller for executive clemency. Two score of business and professional men of Massachusetts are backing Pomeroy in his fight for liberty. These men have petitioned the governor for a public hearing. If the hearing is granted it is planned to have Pomeroy appear, under guard and tell his story in person. Alexander Buys Engraving Plant Homer W. Alexander, an engraver of many years experience, will take over the plant of the Orange-co. Engraving Co. in Santa Ana May 1, according to announcement today. Alexander has been associated with the Long Beach Engraving Co., and his face is familiar to practically every newspaper man and printer in Orange-co. For the last two years he has made weekly trips to Orange-co. soliciting business for the Long Beach concern. Beginning his engraving career in Pittsburgh, Pa., sixteen years ago, Alexander has worked in many of the larger commercial engraving plants of the east and for several years was engraver for the Columbus, O.-Dispatch. "GIFT NIGHT" AT CALIF. TONIGHT The California theater has wonderful assortment of gifts worth over $100 that will be distributed tonight. Milton Sills goes to sea again. He is Captain John Clay, the two-masted pearl schooner "Lark", in First National's "Man Desires," a rapid-fire draught of romance at the California Theatre for today and Thursday. Marin-co., authorities were investigating today the fatal shooting of Mrs. Caroline Goetz. The last night at Mill Valley, to determine whether a charge murder should be laid against Alvin Axelson, San Francisco draughtsman, the woman's son-in-law. Authorities say they learn that Axelson, estranged from his wife, attacked her in a quarrel over a property settlement. Although in solitary confinement for forty-one of his forty-nine years, Pomeroy is vigorous and healthy. He has kept in touch with affairs in the outside world and has done much writing. Pomeroy was convicted of murdering a boy of five in 1874, when he was fourteen years old. He also confessed to slaying a girl, whose ashes were dug from the cellar of the Pomeroy home in South Boston. SIGN CONTRACT TO SELL FIVE LINERS WASHINGTON, April 29.—The Shipping Board today signed the contract with the Robert Dollard interests of California for the sale to it of the five president-type liners owned by the government and operated until now by the Pacific Mall Steamship Co. Prior to executing the contract a vote was taken and it stood 5 to 2. The original vote on the sale was 4 to 3. EACH ROTARIAN HAS YOUNG GUEST With speeches by students of the Hi School and by S. Warren Douglas, boys' advisor at the school and Assemblyman S. C. Hartranft, Fullerton Rotary club today observed Boys' Week. Each member brought a boy with him. Anaheim Rotary club was represented among the guests. COURTHOUSE DOINGS A 14-year-old Santa Ana girl was on the witness stand before a jury in Superior Judge F. C. Drummum's court this morning to testify she was criminally attacked at Orange-co, park the day after Christmas by James Marigold, prominent Santa Ana youth, who plays in dance orchestra there and at Anaheim. So hotly contested is the case that all yesterday was spent in securing a jury, which is made up of four women and eight men all of mature years. Because of the prominence of the defendant a large crowd of spectators has been following CYPRESS CYPRESS, April 29. (Spl.)—Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Noll entertained guests at a delightful dinner at their home Sunday. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Peterson of San Pedro, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Grach of Los Angeles and Mrs. Blanche Hart, wife of James Hart motion picture actor and baby daughter Dorothy Louise of Hollywood. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer McWilliams and daughter Doris motored to Lake Arrowhead Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. G. G. Priddy entertained guests with a delightful turkey dinner at their home Sunday. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. I. P. Harter and Mrs. Zula Sullian of Strongheart, Illinois, and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Harter and three sons, Leland, Charles, and Richard, of Hollywood. Later the party motored to Newport Beach, where they enjoyed a pleasant afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. P. Duvall were visitors of the W. J. Rennie home Sunday afternoon. Mr. R. Martin returned home from Corsecanna, Texas, Saturday. Mr. Martin is connected with the Texas oil fields but will remain with his wife and son Walter for the summer. On Mr. Martin's return he presented his wife with a 1925 Studebaker Brougham. Heary Cutter and daughter Marjorie left Monday on an auto tour to Oklahoma. They expect to be gone several months. Miss Anna Myers of Anaheim was a visitor at the E. L. McWilliams home Thursday. THREE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN CRASH VISALIA, Aprij 29.—George Glick and son, Roland, and Lerne Crites, young son of Miri Irene Crites, all of Sacramento sustained fractured skulls, a three being probably fatally injured in an auto collision seven miles west of Visalia this morning. Dorothy Glick sustained severe bruises and Mrs. Crites and Mr. Glick were also cut and bruised. The car driven by Glick collided at a corner with a large sediment driven by A. N. Randall, of Visalia. John Connelly of Los Angeles yesterday was awarded $1500 damages against George Rebman Anaheim rancher, who admitted liability in Superior Judge Z. B. West's court for an accident in February, 1924, when a bus was forced from the road by Rebmans' sedan. In the crash at Buena Park, in which Mrs. Lydia Eff was killed, Connelly alleged he sustained injuries which should have entitled him to damages of $25,000. The amount of damages and the extent of injuries were the only issues left for the jury to decide. COMMITS SUICIDE IN SECOND ATTEMPT MODESTO, April 29—Charles Bentley, 25, arrested Sunday on a burglary charge, was successful in his second attempt to take his life within two days when he hung himself in his cell in the county jail here last night. A heavy bell cord tied to the barg of the cell was used by Bentley. An investigation by Coroner Carl W. Shannon showed that the man had tied the cord around his neck and then jumped from his bunk, breaking his neck. The day previous he tied a blanket about his neck and jumped off his bed. His limp form was round shortly afterwards by a fellow prisoner in time to be revived. WORLD HEADED FOR CURRENCY REFORM WASHINGTON, April 29—With the return of Great Britain to the gold standard, the world is headed or general currency reform and economic principles in the opinion of informed government quarters here. Other nations, like France, Italy, Belgium and Norway, are expected to go on a gold basis even though it involves devaluation of their present currency units. Germany and Poland have resorted to this expedient with beneficial results. AUTO CLUB GROWS Another example of the manner in which business has been picking up in the Anaheim district since December was given today by J. A. B. Dillworth, manager of the Anaheim district of the Auto Club of So. Calif., who declared that more members, after deducting withdrawals, had joined the club up to today during April than in any month of the last six.
