The definitions are numbered to correspond with the numbers on the diagram. Any word defined in the text under "HORIZONTAL" will be given at its number, shown on the diagram, and will extend all the way across to the first black space to the right of that number. That is, the word must begin in the square that contains its identifying number, and extend as far as the white squares continue uninterruptedly. Any word defined under "VERTICAL" will also begin in the white space that contains its number, but will extend downward as far as the white spaces remain uninterruptedly. With all their enormous differences in natural endowment, men agree in one thing, and that is their innate desire to enjoy the pleasure and escape the pains of life; anr, in short, to do nothing but that which it pleases them to do, without the least reference to the welfare of the society into which they are borne. It is their inheritance from the long series of ancestors, human and semi-human and brutal, in whom the strength of this innate tendency to self-assertion was the condition of victory in the struggle for existence. This is the reason assigned by Thomas Huxly for the insatiable hunger for enjoyment of all mankind, which is one of the essential conditions of success in the war with the state of nature outside; and yet the sure agent of destruction of society if allowed free play within. The check upon this free field of self assertion, or natural liberty, which is the necessary condition for the origin of human society, is the product of organic necessities of a different kind from those upon which the constitution of the hive depends. One of these is the mutual affection of parent and offspring, intensified by the long infancy of the human species. CHILDREN'S PICTORIAL CROSS WORD PUZZLE HOW TO SOLVE PUZZLE The words start in the num. squares and run either across or down. Only one letter is placed in each white square. If the proper words are found each combination of leters in the white squares will form words. The key to the puzzle—the first word—is given in the drawing. Below are keys to the other words. Among the speakers announced are J. A. Lippincott of Los Angeles, prominent engineer; George Hinkley of Redlands, city engineer and director of the water spreading operations of Orange, River-side and San Bernardino counties; Col. S. H. Finley of Santa Ana, member of the board of supervisors; and Francis Cuttle of River-side, for many years president of the Water Conservation Association. Water levels in the Santa Ana will enter into the discussion. The Yorba Linda women will serve a checken dinner. But the most important, Huxley believed, is the tendancy so strongly developed in man, to reproduce in himself actions and feelings similar to, correlated with, those of other men. "Mar is the most consummate of all mimics in the animal world; none but himself can draw or model; none comes near him in the scope, variety and exactness of vocal imitations; none is such a master of gesture; when he seems to be impelled AUCT SATURDAY, APRIL AT T MARTIN AUCTION 151 So. STAR MAIL ROUTE DAYS RECALLED Memories of the star mail days of years ago are recalled in ah inter-taining little hand-made and hand-written book compiled by Arthur D. Alexander at San Fran-discoin March, 1924, former driver of one of the wagons in Nebraska. The little volume was put into the hands of J. H. Whitaker, Postmaster, by C. W. Hedges. It is entitled "Mail Route Days". The Star stood for Certainty, Celerity and Security, says a note on the fly leaf. One of the routes extended from Lincoln, Neb., to North Bond on the Platte River. Another south from Benton on the south side of the Platte to Urban near the head of Oak Creek in Butler-co. This latter route was 180 miles long and required five days to cover. The book contains some pencil illustrations and also some good photos of some of the places in question. If she marries money, it doesn't take her ten minutes to learn to say "ours."
