One small life in God's great plan, How fatile it seems as the ages roll, Do what it may, or strive how it can, To alter the succep of the infinite whole! A single stitch in an endless web, A drop in the oceans flow and ebb! But the pattern is rent where the stitch is lost, Or marred where the tangled threads are crossed; And each life that fails of its true intent Mars the perfect plan that its Master meant. —Susan Coolidge. CONTROLLING THE WORLD The suggestion of General Lord Thomas, who was secretary of aeronautics in the late labor ministry in England, that the United States and Great Britain co-operate in aviation and thus practically control the whole world, since the territorial possessions of the two powers encircle the globe, comes as a surprise from a man who is an earnest advocate of the League of Nations, for the plan, if carried out, would be a most flagrant violation of the principles of the covenant. We are interested in the development of American aviation for commercial advancement and for national defense, but America has no desire to unite with any country for the purpose of controlling the world. WATER SUPPLY PLENTY FOR SUMMER Recent rains, with snows in mountains, assure plenty of water for the domestic irrigation and power needs of Southern California, particularly for this county. Even though there should be no more precipitation before the normal dry season begins, this section will fare well as to water supply. But there is likelihood of additional showers in April and May. So there is no reason for apprehension on this score. With the truth back of them, residents of Southern California well may bombard the East with letters and facts about the water supply here and about conditions here in general. It might be well to anticipate another onslaught against this state by unfair falsifying critics. Let the rest of the country know the truth about California. Make it impossible for falsehoods to gain ground by anticipating them with indisputable facts. California must protect itself systematically against misrepresentations. There are shrewd interests and subtle forces at work, in Eastern states, to divert tourist and homeseeker travel from California. This state must protect itself against this insidious campaign of detraction. Test a man in his honesty and if he stands the test he can be trusted implicitly. California, as a state, is 5 years old. But it doesn't look to be a year over "sweet 16." Plant Beans Prices will be good for this year's crop. I have Lima, Henderson Bush and Blackeye seed. A. COMMENTS of the PRESS What Editors Are Saying EUROPE'S CORRIDOR OF WAR—Chicago Tribune The Danzig corridor is causing another flareup in Europe. It Poland free access to the sea through the free port of Danand it divides the people of East Prussia from the rest of many by a broad strip of territory under alien control. It is virtually as if the Hudson ran to Montreal and the United States had been forced, as the result of defeat in war, to opt an alienation of its territory, providing the English, French, whoever might have Canada, a waterway to the free port of York, splitting New England off from the rest of the country. Cradle of the Nation in the North would be cut off from the land, a great port taken away, and an alien strip driven through the heart of the East. That is what the treaty makers did to the eastern part of Russia. It is such a thing as makes wars, but it is not a thing which endures unless the defeated nation has forever lost its length. The victors decided that Poland must have a port and there must be an open route by which Poland, Czecho-Slovakia and Roumania could be supported, reinforced and supplied in Russia attacked. That would have to be either across German territory which the Germans resist, or by the sea to Danzig. Germany naturally wants to re-unite to it the separated part East Prussia, the New England of the country. The Poles are prepared to use force to keep the corridor, and even to seize free town of Danzig. We used to say "Tae Mississippi shall flow unvexed to the mouth of it could not be French or Spanish. HEALTH AND DIET ADVICE By Dr. Frank McCoy Author of "THE EAST WAY TO HEALTH" GOOD—UNCOOKED SALAD VEGETABLES—(Continued) LETTUCE is the most commonly used salad vegetable, but from several standpoints, it is not the best. Lettuce contains a larger amount of water than any of the other salad vegetables, and less of the organic minerals. In order to supply enough of these minerals, a large amount must be eaten at one time. Now, lettuce contains a certain hypnotic agent, called hyoscyamine, which is a deadening effect upon the nerves of the stomach if used in large quantities. If a large supply of lettuce is taken at any meal, the hypnotic effect of this chemical will manifest itself in drowsiness that will become apparent shortly after the meal eaten. Digestion will be retarded, and because of this and other good uses will ferment more easily, and it may safely be said that those whose digestive powers are weakened in any way will be well advised to content themselves with very small amounts of lettuce. However, this ill effect does not appear to be at all provenced if only a small quantity of lettuce is eaten at any one time, and it may be used quite often as a garnish for the rest of the salad. I do not know of any other dietitian who has brotzt this point about lettuce, but I assure you that I have checked sufficiently on the truth of it, so that if you are "a walking gas factory" you had better set a strict limit to your ration of lettuce. NASTURTIUM LEAVES AND FLOWERS may be added to a salad and used as a garnish. Both the leaves and the flowers may be eaten, and they impart an agreeable flavor to any salad. ENDIVES are a very good leafy salad vegetable, and should be used in preference to lettuce as a succulent vegetable whenever possible to secure them.
