'SHOP EARLY' ADVICE TO PROSPECTS
Factories to Side-step Over-Production This Year They Declare
There is going to be no sudden jumping of factory production this spring to meet the sudden demands of prospective purchasers, as there has been at the opening of the touring season in other years.
Do your motorcar shopping early is the advice being distributed by manufacturers.
This is the sort of letter being sent out:
Have you decided what kind of car you are going to buy next month, or the month after that, for the little vacation tour you have arranged?
You have?
Well, just how much will your plans be upset if you do not succeed in getting the car you want, when you want it?
Such questions are appropriate in view of a situation that automobile makers and dealers now declare exists in their industry. It is one that virtually insures disappointment for those who now know they are going to buy cars sometime in the late Spring or Summer, but who are putting off the actual giving of orders. It is not going to be possible this year.
When, Where of Sunrise Services
At least 14 different sunrise services will be available to motorists on Easter morning, according to the Auto Club of So. Calif.
Some of them are: Los Angeles Coliseum, 5:10 a.m., doors opening 3:00 a.m., Philharmonic orchestra; Occidental College, Ave. 46 and Camp-
ACCIDENTAL FATALITIES DECLINE
Decrease in Metropolis 19 P.C. in January, February, March
Deaths from motor vehicles in Los Angeles city for the first quarter of the year show a decided reduction over the first three months of 1924, according to preliminary reports compiled by the public safety department of the Auto Club of So. Calif. Last year up to April 1 there were 71 fatalities, while this year the total is 57, a decrease of 14 fatalities or better than 19 per cent.
Figures for the entire county do not show so large a decrease, the total being 134 deaths for the first three months of last year.
ADDITIONAL TAXATION SPARED
Truck Owners' Counsellor Says State Highway Funds Enough
Pointing out that Los Angeles co pays more in State taxes than all of No. Calif. above Prescott combined, M. J. Piscus of Brevard attorney of the Truck Owner Area of So. Calif., today scores legislative plans for additional taxation, especially the 3-cent tax.
His association opposes any further taxation whatever for highway purposes, Fiscal averages even to maintain a bond issue. The biennium state budget will also gregate the unheard of sum more than $120,000,000, Fiscal declared.
Asked particularly whether the organization would support the proposed $60,000,000 bond insured for highway purposes, in case the appeal to be the only solution Fiscal repeated that the association opposed all additional taxation.
The attorney declared also that Northern Calif. grabbed all the state institutions there were available and left nothing to So. Calif except an insane asylum; and Southern Branch, U. of C.
The State Highway Commission has money enough on hand ready for its roads, in the opinion...
It is not going to be possible this year to order a motorcar in May or June with any sure hope of having it delivered within the week. It will be more usual to obtain what you have ordered a month or two later—which is disturbing to vacation plans, to say the least.
There are several reasons for this.
One is that manufacturers are watching so that they will not be caught in the trap of over-production. They have had enough experience with that. They have been keeping output down to a close relation with the actual ordering of cars by consumers. A certain margin in advance of current requirements has been made during the winter months, in anticipation of great demand in the Spring and Summer, but it is narrower than in previous years. Car in warehouse are not plentiful enough to care for all the wants that will develop, and current production is being determined by actual orders.
Another reason is that dealers, whose operations are limited by bank credits, cannot undertake on the mere ground of speculation over future demand, to make arrangements for handling more than a certain number of cars. In order that they may be sure of procuring for the buyers any make of car within a few days of the time it is actually wanted they must have advance notification. Then, on the basis of definite orders in hand, they can arrange for financing a sufficient number of automobiles to meet the demand.
The second annual Radio Show of So. Calif. will open April 20 in Los Angeles, lasting for six days. Twenty radio manufacturers are scheduled to exhibit.

Calif. Last year up to April 1 there were 71 fatalities, while this year the total is 57, a decrease of 14 fatalities or better than 19 per cent.
Figures for the entire county do not show so large a decrease, the total being 134 deaths for the first three months of last year compared with 121 for the same period of this year, a reduction of 13 or slightly more than nine per cent.
The decrease is credited to a combination of causes, notably the new traffic ordinance effective in the city, the extension of safety work by the club during the past year to include many schools, organization and civic bodies, the installation of thousands of additional warning signs and traffic signals, and the establishment of other material aids to safety.
An analysis of the figures indicates that the safety measures are the direct cause of the large reduction in fatalities in the city proper, as it is the congested districts and the city schools that the safety teachings have been intensified. However, the decrease in deaths in the county may be considered gratifying in view of the fact that there was a large increase in population and approximately a 20 per cent increase in the number of automobiles, these factors combining to create a more hazardous situation on the highways than prevailed one year ago.
Within the past year numerous new activities have been introduced by the club, designed expressly to reduce casualties. Pedestrian traffic regulation has proved a decided factor in reducing accidents since it was inaugurated several months ago. Through activity of the club, pedestrian's lanes have been established, tunnels for school children to avoid heavy traffic have been adopted, warnining lights or flashers signals have been installed at dangerous points, hundreds of
Safety committees have been organized in the schools, salaries are put on at intervals; the children, motion pictures have been shot to the pupils as part of the school curriculum; parent-teacher depicting safety measures has been distributed by the thousand and every effort has been made carry the message of public safety to every individual.
In So. Calif., particularly, has been brought under strong movement to introduce safety curriculum in all schools. The public safety department the club has been asked to assist in introducing this work in public schools of Glendale, Inez Beach, San Diego, Pasadena, Sac Barbara, and other cities, some which have their programs under way.

Question: I experience considerable difficulty in retaining the lubricant in the differential housing of my car. It continually runs out on the rear wheels and brake drums, causing considerable trouble. How can this be overcome.
Answer: In most cases this difficulty cannot be overcome by a change in the lubricant. There is usually a mechanical condition involved and the retaining washer at the rear wheels should be inspected and renewed.
If after this is done the trouble still continues. It is well to not work out easily. As a combination of gear coo with tight-fitting felt wear the rear wheels will overco trouble.
Question: Will oil act as solvent on springs, brake rings, etc.?
Answer: Oil is in no rust solvent, but it is the b of rust preventative. If are badly rusted, the intruded of oil or grease may as condition somewhat, but not remove the rust.
The best method is to the springs and scrapes.
Opposition Grows To 3-Cent Gas Tax
City councils of Glendale, Pasadena, Los Angeles and other important Southern California cities are uniting in vigorous opposition to motorists being assessed for the cost of new state highway construction as proposed in the legislation now before the state assembly, calling for additional taxes or gasoline. Motor car dealers of Los Angeles and San Francisco the Los Angeles C. of C., the Auto Club of So. Calif. and other important organizations have strongly protested against raising the gasline tax from 2c to 2e, and it is expected that a deluge of telegrams and letters to representatives and senators will follow the recent announcement from Sacramento that every effort will be made to pass the gas tax bill in spite of the widespread opposition.
It is pointed out that the motorist of California already is carrying the burden of maintenance of the highways to the tune of more than $10,000,000 annually, and that since new roads unquestionably are of advantage to skate and adjacent property, it is only fair that the cost of new construction be regarded as a capital investment to be shared equitably by all.
It is urged by those opposing the additional gas tax that members of the legislature should be promptly advised of the objections to any increase of taxes against the motorist since the last legislative increased this tax by more than 100 per cent.
Pass These Words Along Your Friends Who Are Touched
Are you or your friends planning to take any long tours? Do you know all there is to know about long distance outing, oruld a few words of warning in regard to such long trips from the touring bureau of one of the clubs be of interest?
Here are some of the "don'ts from the club, and every one of them is important, whether you are taking a long trip or a short one—in regard to the equipment of your car and person:
Don't allow the car to be without provisions or food of some sort at any time.
Don't fall to have warm clothing in the outfit. The high altitudes in the west are cold and the dry air is penetrating. Don't forget the yellow goggles. In driving west you have to face the sun all afternoon and the glare is hard on the eyes.
Don't drive thru water without first acerclating the depth.
Don't wait until your gasoline is almost gone before filling up.
An annual report of work done, expenditures, routings of road projects, etc. must be filed with the State Board of Control according to an amendment to the Breed 3-cent gas tax bill prepared this week.

As never before the Chrysler Six combines roominess with conservation of space. As never before it gives to a car of the Chrysler weight and dimensions riding qualities and roadability heretofore ound only in two-ton cars. It is hardly to be wondered at that in less than 12 months the public invested more than $50,000,000 in this superior type of motoring. Demonstrations of these superiorities await your convenience.

Maxwell, Chrysler Car Sales Grow
Up to yesterday Craig & Hauset, Maxwell and Chrysler distributors, had delivered three new cars this month, besides one used car.
Charles Aspelin had taken delivery of a Chrysler sedan, W. B. Fay, rancher, of a Chrysler roadster and D. P. Cecil of Buena Park a Maxwell coupe.
Several unusual pieces of equipment mark the Chrysler Hauser pointed out. One is a puralator, which cleanses the oil every 25 miels. Only a few other cars, like the Rolls Royce, has this contrivance.
Another is the air cleaner for the carburetor, which tends to lengthen the life of the motor. The Lockhead hydraulic brakes also are found only on a very limited number of cars.
HUGE ORDER FOR HUDSONS, ESSEX
Anaheimers and Fullertonians who have been waiting for their Hudson and Essex cars will be eneered to know that an order for $1,500,000 worth of these cars for April delivery has been sent to the manufacturers by Walter M. Murphy of Los Angeles, So. Call, distributor.
The Hudson and Essex factories next week will touch a new high production record of 1,000 cars per day, the largest output of six-cylinder cars in the history of industry, according to the manufacturers. Murphy will have to sell $50,000 worth of the cars per day during April.

CULVER CITY RACE CARD GROWS
Wonderlich and Maybe Hager, European Star To Compete 19th
CULVER CITY, April 11—Jerry Wunderlich is the latest addition to the corps of speed demons who will compete in the first annual sprint race matinee scheduled for the board speedway at Culver City April 19.
There is also a famous speed king from Europe in Los Angeles, trying to secure a mount for the sprint race program scheduled for April 19, at the Culver City board speedway. This foreign driver is Eugene G. Hager, erstwhile star of the Austrian Damier team and winner of many of the greatest speed classics staged in Europe previous to last year.
Before the World War, back in the days of 1912 and 1913, the name of Eugene Hager was as familiar to the race fans of Europe as those of Rene Thomas, the Frenchman; Christian Lanteschlager, the German; Pierre Bordino, the Italian; or Percy Thomas, the Englishman. He won road races over in Europe that stamped him as the star of stars; and he was just as big in the sport on the other side of the Atlantic as Eddie Rickenbacker, Earl Cooper, Teddy Tetzlaff and Berney Old field were in this country ten or twelve years ago.
As already announced Bordino.

Above is a vivid picture of the tremendous buying demand created throughout the country by the Nash Special Six and Advanced Six Models.
Total automobile sales monthly are registering severe decreases as contrasted with corresponding months last year.
On the other hand Nash sales are monthly sweeping far beyond the records of last year.
It is a dramatic and convincing national tribute to the downright superiority in beauty, in performance, and in value of the Nash product.
