In the sale of Ford cars and trucks these show that daily domestic retail deliveries have more than double since early in January. The largest increase came during the latter part of February, reflecting the upward trend of business, which is now under way, and the optimistic outlook for March. Another interesting feature is shown in the sales of Fordson tractors which have made a rapid gain, particularly through the agricultural sections, indicating that the farmer is coming is stronger as a buying factor. Daily sales of Fordsons are at the present time four times as great as they were early in the year. Retail sales of the company during February, exclusive of those in Canada and British possessions served by the Ford Motor company of Canada, Ltd., totaled 125,421 Ford cars and trucks and 7211 Fordson tractors. Of these, the retail deliveries in the United States reached 112,526 Ford cars and trucks and 5914 Fordsona. Reports also indicate improving conditions in the high priced car field. Lincoln cars set a new February record with 508 domestic retail deliveries as compared with 426 for the same month a year ago. Iowa Memorial on Whittier Campus The 300,000 and more Iowaans in Southern California are receiving with great interest the announcement of a plan to build here in Southern California, the adopted home of so many Hawkeyes, a beautiful building that will serve as a memorial to Iowa ideals and traditions and commemorate the fame of her great men and women. The proposed building, which is being sponsored primarily by the Iowa Ass'n of Whittier, will be erected on the campus of Whittier college. It is to consist of a Music Hall that will seat 1000 persons, reception and rest rooms where Iowa may meet their friends, an Iowa memorial library, a "hall of fame" where the pictures and records of prominent Iowaans may be placed and a suite of rooms where eminent Iowaans may be entertained. The city of Whittier is taking steps to acquire 60 acres adjoining the college campus for a recreation park. This park will be developed in conjunction with the future athletic stadium of the college. Several thousand people can be handled with ease on the college campus and in the proposed park. "Try a telephone-booth."—Ex Lubrication Questions Answered by ASSOCIATED OIL COMPANY Staff of Automotive Engineers Question: What causes gumming of valves and how may this be overcome? Answer: There are several contributing causes of this trouble, some being mechanical and in some cases the nature of the lubricating oil may have some effect. The usual type of L or T head poppet valve is lubricated either from direct splash from the connecting rods or from oil vapors which arise from the crankcase to the valve chambers. Valves, particularly the exhaust valves, operate at very high temperatures and the same condition in connection with carbon deposits exists here as in the combustion chamber. An important difference is due to the fact that there is no flame to ignite and burn it leaving a reasonably clean deposit. Lubricating oils have at tendency to bake and form a gummy deposit on valve stems, causing the sticking you mention. This can be overcome by the use of an off, which deposits a minimum amount of carbon. Mechanically this condition can also be corrected by allowing a minimum amount of oil to reach the stems. This can be accomplished by having draining holes in the lower portion of the valve chambers which will permit the excess oil to return to the crankcase. Question: How often should front wheel bearings be repacked? Answer: A good practice is to remove the front wheels and completely clean the bearings with kerosene, and then repack with soft cup grease, approximately every two thousand miles. HELLO THERE!
