Your Cross Word Puzzle
HOW TO SOLVE THE CROSS WORD PUZZLE
The way to solve the Cross Word Puzzle is to fill in the white squares of the diagram with the words which agree with the accom-panying definitions. The definitions are numbered to correspond with the numbers on the diagram.
Any word defined in the text under "Horizontal" will begin at its number, shown on the diagram, and will extend all the way across to the first black space to the right of that number. That is, the word must begin in the square that contains its identifying number and extend as far as the white squares continue uninterruptedly.
Any word defined under "Vertical" will also begin in the white space that contains its number, but will extend downward as far as the white spaces remain uninterruptedly.
THIS TIRE MADE AS GOOD AS EVER
There are cheaper tires and more expensive tires than the General, but none offering a better value to the user, says F. S. Dunlop of the Anaheim Vulcanizing Works. Dunlop, who has been connected with the tire and rubber game perhaps longer than any man in the county, is an expert repairman and can give a re-tread inferior tire none obtainable anywhere.
The low pressure General built as strongly as ever, and one of the tires commended by H. J. Banta, of Los Angeles, well known accessories man who was mormer prominent in the Auto Trade Ass'n activities.

A Little Talk on Thrift
By S. W. Straus,
(President American Society for Thrift)
Much harm is often done by those who seem to fall that thrift means merely denying ourselves pleasures and comforts in order to put aside sums of money.
Let us see what the situation actually is with regard to our savings.
Money that is saved means merely that it has been diverted to useful channels. Instead of being for purposes that will do us no good as often is the case, or that may do us harm, our savings are spent constructively.
Even accumulations put in a savings bank are immediately invested for us. The institution acts as our agent in making use of our savings until such a time possibly as we may desire to withdraw our deposits from the bank and invest them in a home, a farm, a business, or in one other worthy manner.
This is the essence of real thrift is correct spending.
We have at one extreme of the scale the miser who hoards his money not for useful purposes, but merely for the selfish lust of piling up wealth. At the other end of the scale we have the spendthrift. The money in his hand possesses certain definite values of purchasing power, but he has no appreciation of these values or their relative importance. Hende, he dissipates his money as fast as he receives it.
The thrifty man embodies the qualities that are lacking in the miser and in the spendthrift. He is well balanced where they are out of poise. He can see facts to which they are blind.
To be thrifty is neither to spend all nor to save all.
Thrift is the conserving of each resource that it may be used and invested to the best advantage.
This is why the thrifty man never stands still. He is ever moving onward and upward on the pathway of success.
Thrift and progress are synonymous.

Fruit Cup—Peel and remove the white membrane from a grape fruit and one or two oranges. Peel the pulp in sherbet cups in small pieces. Add bananas cut up, little pineapple, apple or any other fruit you may have on hand.
Potatoes Baked With Spareribs and Sauerkraut—This is an especially timely dish, as all the ingredients are now in season, suited to spring and are fairly cheap. Boil the sauerkraut half an hour. Drain. Place piece of bacon rind in the center of a roasting pan, arrange the kraut over that in a slanting position. Peel medium sized potatoes and put around the ribs, adding a cup of hot water, or better still, soup stock or beef extract. Cook in a fairly hot oven, turning the potatoes constantly and gently lifting the kraut so that it does not stick to the bottom. This is complete, tasty and economical dinner.
Potatoes au Gratin—Pare a boil as many potatoes as are needed until they are done, but soft, drain them, cool and drain them. Butter a deep baking dish put in the potatoes, dust them with pepper and salt, dot them with littel jumps of butter or springlem with two tall spoons of grated cheese milk with a tablespoon of fine crumple Peur over the potatoes a cup of cream sauce or a cupful plain cream to which a beaten hash is been added. DEATH CLAIMS
AGED INDIAN
YAKIMA, Wash., March 22—Death of Chief Pete Klickitat at the age of 103 years, reduced one more the fast dwindling list of famous old Indians in the Pacific northwest. Klickitat count named after the gallant old warrior, will perpetuate his name.
The chief felt he was dying for several weeks before the end came, and his medicine man was with him constantly. He would have no white doctors, and rejected the white man's religion, yet his funeral was held in the Methodist church at White Swan, and his children say they have no reason to believe that the service did not speed his soul to the happy hunting ground.
RING CHAMP IN BIG MONEY MATCH
LOS ANGELES, March 22—Jess Willard and Jack Dempsey are to fight again—but it will be through the peaceful medium of competition for hotel trade here.
Dempsey owns and operates a hotel in the residential district, and now Willard comes along with the announcement that he is going to build one, too, larger than Dempsey's, and to cost $560,000.
Business is Business
PASADENA, March 22—Michel Leff proved that he was honest, when he arrested her recently.
Officers round a case of liquor in his machine, and took him along to jail, but not before Leff had informed them that he was on his rounds at the time, that his customers expected him, and that business methods impelled him to telephone them all that they would go dry.
