BUENA PARK BUENA PARK, March 16—(Spt.)—Little Charlie Girvin ran a thorn from a palm leaf into his leg, breaking the thorn off. WAHLBERG (County Agricultural Agent) In view of numerous injuries that have been received relative to pruning treatment of wind and frost injured trees, it would seem timely to review experiences of 1913 and 1922. It might be said injurious effect of dry desert winds are practically same as injury caused from excessive cold, as far as pruning is concerned. Trees seriously affected by either unfavorable weather condition should not be pruned for at least four to six months after injury, in light of past experience. The theory that prompt pruning is necessary to prevent further dying back of injured wood has been thoroughly exploded. Early pruning has been detriment. Pruning operations carried on by Citrus Experiment Station and duplicated by number of commercial groves in South following 1923 freeze indicate unpruned trees year following period of freeze had developed larger top and more fruit, there being practically no fruit on rows cut back heavily. Three methods of pruning were used in these tests: 1. moderate pruning; The third treatment, no pruning; The third treatment, no pruning; gave heat results following first year. These results correspond entirely with experience of growers all over state and demonstrate conclusively that early pruning is unnecessary, does no good and increases expense, as second pruning is necessitated. Results from handling of wind burned trees in same manner also working at Calexico, is spending a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. S. Teeter. Lewis Robison visited his sister, Mrs. Frank Payton at her home in Fullerton Saturday. Miss Hattie Stanley, who is staying in Los Angeles now, visited her sister, Mrs. M. S. Berkey Friday evening. Mrs. Julia Belote has been quite sick. Her daughter, Mrs. Walter Staley of Balbon is with her. A recent communication from the chief of the weather bureau to the farm advisor's office indicated that in view of decreased appropriations this year for the maintenance of the bureau, only one station for wind observation in Orange-co could be established.
