The definitions are numbered to correspond with the numbers on the diagram. Any word defined in the text under "Horizontal" will begin at its number, shown on the diagram, and will extend all the way across to the first black space to the right of that number. That is, the word must begin in the square that contains its identifying number and extend as far as the white squares continue uninterruptedly. Any word defined under "Vertical" will also begin in the white space that contains its number, but will extend downward as far as the white spaces remain uninterruptedly. THRILL SCENES IN 'THE DEVIL'S CARGO' You wouldn't believe it possible to pile so many punch scenes into a picture as are found in Paramount's "The Devil's Cargo," feature at the California theatre for today and Tuesday. The story, an adaptation of "The River Boat" by Charles Whitaker, is a fine love melodrama of California in 1850. It opens in the old gold town of Sacramento. Victor Fleming, the director (he made "Code of the Sea," "Empty Hands" and others), took his cast and crew of more than 200 men and women down to the Sacramento river for a month's stay. Here they built a replica of the old pioneer town and relived the lives of its people. "The Devil's Cargo" is an accurate, graphic picture of the thrill-filled days of the dim and distant past—of the days of the great open spaces where men were mean. And there's one particularly hateful character in the picture—Wallace Beery—he of "Robin Hood" and "The Sea Hawk." Beery, it is claimed, has the finest role of his career as the big brute stoker of the river boat, on which the vigilantes, a band of law-abiding citizens of Sacramento, report the town's undesirables. In the picture you see one of the greatest free-for-alls of your life between Beery and William Collier, Jr. Both are featured in the production with Pauline CLUB EXPLAINS APPRAISAL BASIS Just how does the auto dealer determine the worth of your used car when you trade it in on a new one? Why is it that some cars bring more than others? What is a fair basis of appraisal of my used car? These are a few of the questions members of the National Auto club fire continually at the club's information department. Motorists in buying their new car should not lose sight of the fact that they are buying a new car and not selling their old one. In other words, investigate the field of automobiles, determine which car best suits your needs, then buy it; don't sacrifice your essential needs in a motor car for the few dollars move you might get on some other make. Few there are who appreciate the successful maintenance of an auto agency. Dealers are compelled to have large resources to floor their new cars and used stock can not be furnished as collateral, hence the necessity of the dealer keeping his used car stock at a minimum. As a qucturing market for wheat, grain and other commodities, so is there an ever-changing value of the used car market. It is the time-old story of supply and demand. When you bring your car to your dealer and ask him what he will offer you for it on a trade-in, he doesn't just scratch his head and figure how cheap he can get it from you; he has a definite figure which he will offer you. This figure is based upon what your particular model is bringing throughout California at the time of appraisal. The condition of motor tires, paint, etc., of course, has some influence on the figure. If you return some weeks later and agree to accept the dealers' figure you may be again disappointed to learn that the figure is lower. "Old Man Supply" has gotten in ahead of you and down goes the value. It is well to consider these facts in the purchase of your new car. Your dealer will give you what your car is worth. Remember the fact that he intends to bet in business tomorrow ensures you that he will take HORIZONTAL 1. An ox (Gr.) 2. Hasso (ab.) 3. Vigor 4. Belonging to me 5. Part of a slower 6. SOLUTION OF YESTERDAY'S PUZZLE NICKEL TRIMMINGS The present fad for nickel trimming is a pretty one but unfortunately because nickel requires attention and the modern driver hasn't hardly time to buy his gas. A few trimming well polished will great open spaces where men were mean, and there's one particularly hateful character in the picture—Wallace Beery—he of "Robin Hood" and "The Sea Hawk." Beery, it is claimed, has the finest role of his career as the big brute stoker of the river boat, on which the vigilantes, a band of law-abiding citizens of Sacramento, report the town's undesirables. In the picture you see one of the greatest free-for-alls of your life between Beery and William Collier, Jr. Both are featured in the production with Pauline Starke and Claude Adams. The "Bonanza" saloon and gambling half is another big seller. Everything is faithfully reproduced, the bar, roulette and card fortune in gold targets passed tables over which fortune after years ago, etc. The river boat sequence is crammed full of action Here you have one good man and an innocent girl adrift on the Pacific in an old hulk of a craft with the gamblers and thieves of Sadramto as shipmates—and a half crazed stoker, a mountain of man, playing the role of captain Here's a real gripping situation and advance reports have it that Freening has handled it in a masterful manner. Raymond Hatton, Dale Fuller George Cooper and Emmett Kin appear in the supporting cast. An "Out of the Inkwell Cartoon" and a late issue of the International News with special music by Geo. E. Turner complete this program. DON'T CONVERSE WITH THE DRIVER "Don't talk to the man at the wheel." This sign is suggested for motorists by one who recently had a victim of two automobile accidents caused in both instances by persons in the rear seat of the car engaging the driver in conversation and thereby taking his miniatur from the business of guiding the car. The club member suggests that it is a misdeemeanor to talk to the motorman or bus driver and that all ships have notice posted co-spicuously, warning persons not talk to the man at the steering wheel. ALLEGED TRAIN ROBBER KILLED ELDORADO, Kansas, March 16. Claude Henderson, alleged merger of train robbers' gang, dead, and man identified as "B Bill" Latrasse, train robber, in jail with another man and two women, following raid on abducted house by Sheriff E. It is well to consider these facts in the purchase of your new car. Your dealer will give you what your car is worth. Remember the fact that he intends to bet in business tomorrow assures you that he will take every possible cure of you today. PURE WATER Even a novice knows that radiators, piping, jackets, etc., are injured and made inefficient through incrustations resulting from mineral substances inherent in all of nature’s aqua purn products, save perhaps rain water. The only safe thing to use therefore is distilled water. This is not always obtainable, but few indeed are the places nowadays where artificial ice cannot be found. That’s the answer; melt the ice and you have the purest water. The most economical little salesman is a Class Ad in this paper. A Class Ad will bring you results. His feet seem glued upon the floor—he moves as in a trance. The syncopating piccolo inspires him so thrill; his thoughts are all on making dough—the poor old-fashioned pill! This boob wants me to marry him—he says he'll learn to dance, but I'm afraid he lacks the vim—now should I take a chance? Gwendolyn Phlapper This chap, I'm sure, will learn to dance as soon as you are wed. He'll do the Millinery France in style quite talented. The Grocer's Trot, the Butcher's Fling, the Dressmaker's One Step—Oh yes, he'll learn to dance and sing with lots of vim and pop! Prof. Noodle Plain Dealer Want Ads Bring Results
