THURSDAY, MARCH 12, 1925 NEW SYSTEM FOR PACKING ORANGES A new system for packing oranges has been introduced. This system, which handled $40 cars of oranges last season, has just signed a contract with Brogdex Corp. for processing all of its oranges in future. This will displace old fashioned washing machines, generally used, and will get fruit into much better condition for market than present method, and with practically no decay. It will also save leasing of fruit and make net gain of 13 to 12 cents a box, which will be reflected in much better returns to growers. The oranges are first placed in a soaking tank known as Brogdex treatment, that kills all germs which promote decay. The fruit is then thoroughly cleaned with new type of brush and passed thru dryer in usual manner, after which there is applied with atomizers method known as Brogdex, result of which his very much like a thin film of parafine. This is so thin, however, it is not visible. That is applied, with the atomizers just as the oranges enter a soft hair brush, which polishes the fruit and thus makes it very attractive. The dirties fruit can be readily cleansed by this method, far superior to that in general use. The fruit thus treated will not shrink nor decay in transit, and boxes arrive in markets in fine shape with good, full pack. This method of handling oranges was successfully used in the 300 cars shipped without jeicing last season by the Walnut Fruit Growers As'n at Walnut, Calif.; and some results have been attained at other points. On last season's output of Anaheim Citrus Fruit As'n practically $25,000.00 would be saved to growers by using this method, which is so satisfactory to all concerned, including buyers. This is going to be a very interesting and profitable method of handling oranges for Anaheim Citrus Fruit As'n, which will instill system in both of its houses. SECTIONAL DESK On the principle of the sectional book case is a desk that has been invented, made in sections to enable a user to meet his individual requirements. The country visitor was shy. When he went to his first dinner party he made frantic efforts to begin a conversation with the girl at his elbow, but it wasn't until ten minutes had passed that he managed to utter the opening words: "Does your brother like cheese?" She turned lo him with a smile and replied: "I haven't got a brother." Dead silence for another spell. Then he said: "If—if ye had a brother, d'de think he'd—he'd like cheese?" This year the rainfall and snow in the High Sierra is already in excess of average conditions at this time of year, which points to a very prosperous year for this great electric utility. By this action they withdraw all support from the move launched by Senator Harris. Dem. of Georgia., to bring the issue to a vote at the present session. Republicans also agreed to postpone action on the protocol and decided to remain constantly in session until the Isle of Pines treaty is ratified or rejected and then adjourn for the summer. This would mean action on the Lausanne treaty would be postponed until December. “Do tell me something about the play,” she said to the young man.” They said the climax was superb.” “Yes, I am inclined to think was very good.” said Percy. “Can't you describe it to me,” he asked. “Well; the herpine came stealthy on the stage and knelt, iger in hand, behind a clump ribbons. Lubrication Questions Answered by ASSOCIATED OIL COMMAND Staff of Automotive Engineer Question: Is a lubricating oil entirely responsible for carbon formation in cylinders and on valves? Answer: Carbon has been the source of considerable difficulty in automobile engines, and as a consequence has been given a good deal of study as to its origin and nature. There are two factors which bring about carbon in internal combustion engines. In the automobile engine operating with gasoline as a fuel, the principal source of carbon may be traced to the lubricating oil. Petroleum oil upon burning leaves carbon in proportion to its thickness or body. The very light oils such as gasoline, leaving practically no carbon upon burning. The heavier oils such as lubricating oil, having a tendency to deposit considerable of this substance. The amount and nature of this carbon deposit can be kept at a minimum by using the best types of crude oil in the manufacture of lubricating oils and by proper refining methods. Gasoline is no doubt responsible for a small proportion of the carbon found in automobile engines through the principal source is from lubricating oils. In Diesel engines, where much heavier fuel is used, the fuel oil is responsible for a much larger percentage of the carbon deposit than other gasoline is used. Using an oil having a natural tendency to deposit a minimum amount of carbon together with using only the lightest possible grade of this, will reduce the carbon nuisance to a minimum. Question: The complaint is sometimes made that oil contains too much cylinder stock. What is meant by this? Answer: Many motor oils, principally those of paraffine base, are manufactured by a combination of what is known as filtered cylinder stock and neutral oil. This is done for the reason that the best oils are obtained from the light neutral stock and the heavy cylinder stock. A blend in various proportions of these heavy and light stocks are used to make the commercial grade of motor oils. The statement that an oil contains too much cylinder stock is incorrect, as addition of cylinder stock will simply make the oil of a heavier grade but in no way affect its quality. Question: Is it advisable to add graphite to motor oil? Answer: Generally speaking this is a poor policy for the reason that those adding the graphite do not know the correct type in use and generally overdo it. Most graphites are in powder form and settle out of the motor oil. As long as the oil is in circulation this condition will not take place, but when the car is not in use and the oil is rest in the sump the graphite will settle out. This will then clog the feed lines and screens and this, of course may bring about destructive results. A good grade of motor oil periodically changed will lubricate any automobile engine without the addition of other substances such as graphite. A Class Ad will get you results.
