New Eights Center of Interest at Big Annual Exhibition
Optimism, enthroned upon a pile of interesting statistics, grinned forth in benevolent mien as the Ninth Annual Pacific Automobile Show opened Saturday in San Francisco, according to the National Auto Club.
The State Motor Vehicle Dept. estimates a total registration for California of 1,500,000 motor vehicles, a healthy increase over the preceding twelve-month period. This is enough to make any optimist beam forth his belief in prosperity during the 12-months to come.
The Pacific Auto Show was presented against a Venetian background with a remarkable light effect which displayed to the most effective degree the cars exhibited. The musical program was under the direction of Creator and the "Ohs and Ahs" of admiration had a delightful harp accompaniment with the
"Most Service"
Vesta Makers' Aim
Mr. Claude West of the firm of West Brothers of this city, in outlining the policy of one of the largest and the oldest of all battery manufacturers, stated today that "A square deal to all" has been their success as well as the success of each of their distributors.
What Vesta Service Means to You—Briefly—a square deal to all. To us, it doesn't matter what make your battery may be—we simply want to give you the most conscientious treatment your specific case may need.
We are Vesta followers of course, and naturally believe it is the best battery made and if you are not at present a Vesta owner, we wish you were.
But, Vesta service is essentially synonymous with "the best." Our aim is to secure for you the maximum service from your present battery, irrespective of its make.
If repairs or replacements are needed, we want to make them at a cost reasonable as conditions will permit. Or, if it's a new battery, we'll give you the best available.
Vesta service has stood the test of years and is upheld by the enthusiasm of its users and the loyalty of its vast service organization. West Bros, are located at Los Angeles and Chestnut-sts and at 119 North Lemon-sts.
The year closed with a total production of 225,633 motor vehicles having a total value of nearly $200,000,000.
CAMPFIRE PERMIT
ACT HALTER
The one dollar campfire permit measure has been halted due to the fact that the State Board of Forestry and the Development Assn. have been unable to reach a compromise agreement. Under this measure a fee of one dollar annually would be charged every person who wishes to build camp-fires in the timber districts. The Board of Forestry favors the bill and would expect to collect approximate...
Five "Musts"
For 1925 MOON HAS THEM ALL
1. Big flexible balloon tires with small diameter wheels.
2. New steering gear especially designed for balloon tire driving.
3. Four-wheel hydraulic brakes.
4. Four-bearing crankshaft.
5. High resale value assured by permanent style and inbuilt sturdiness.
Consider any car you like. But compare Moon's 1925 completeness with any car in its price class before you decide.
Better be safe than sorry—for any car that has not all of the above features is a season old, before it starts.

Term “Horsepower” Goes Back to Watt
“To get at a clear idea of the term “horsepower,” as it applies to power producing mechanisms, we must go back to the year 1765,” says a principal official of the Buick Motor Co. “At that time James Watt perfected his steam engine to a degree that made it practical and he was trying to build up a market for it. Like all inventors, Watt found a great deal of opposition t his efforts, and in order to stimulate sales he first found it necessary to educate the people to the value of his invention.
Watt knew that he would have to find some way of accurately contrasting the power of his steam engine against the power of horses, because the mine owners were not familiar with any other form of power. His first task, therefore, was to find out just how much power the average work horse pos-

Discrimination in State Road Program Shown In Detail
Sentiment in So. Calif. for an equitable highway program was crystallized at the meeting recently held at the headquarters of the Auto Club of So. Calif. in Los Angeles. To present the case of the motorist before the people at large, President W. L. Valentine of the Auto Club invited some 300 representative citizens from the 13 Southern California counties to attend a highway conference.
It developed that the position taken by the Club relative to tax increase on motorists and a future highway program was endorsed by the Los Angeles C. of C. and the Motor Car Dealers' Ass'n, as fair and equitable.
Briefly the motoring organization contends:
That the past highway program has given So. Calif. only about 34 per cent of the expenditures for state highway development and about the same percentage of the state highway maintenance fund.
Bridge at San Juan Calcium Chloride
Bids are now being advertised for the construction of a re-inforced bridge at San Juan Creek about a quarter of a mile south of San Juan Capistrano, on the Coast Route. The bridge is to be 180 feet long and 30 feet wide. Bids will be opened on March 1st. Calcium chloride is being sprinkled on the most dusty positions of the Mulholland Drive at the present time, the same chemical tried out in a small way. Orange-co. It will serve to keep the road bed damp and hard and lay the dust which has troubled motorists for the last few Sundays. A thin sprinkling of oil also being tried as a means to remedy the dust problem, but calcium chloride method has met with the greatest success. The lay in surfacing the new seabed.
AUTO ACCIDENTS ARE CUT IN L.
Since the installation of the new traffic laws in Los Angeles, it interesting to note that despite through motor vehicle accidents there have decreased almost half in the comparison of January of this year with the first month of 1924.
This decline, reported by public safety department of Auto Club of So. Calif., is due in large part to observance of jaywalking and traffic nances. Auto accidents, the port shows, caused 12 fatalities January of 1925, while 22 are

Rough Weather
No reasonable person would park his plano at the curb in front of his house, leave it day and night, winter or summer and expect the finish to remain perfect. Yet 90 per cent of the automobile owners are subjecting the beautiful glossy finish on their automobiles to this harsh treatment. The owner of the car is not to be blamed; an automobile is not to be wrapped away in cotton-wool for use on special occasions. It is intended for service under every condition of weather or country. The difficulty has been in getting a finish which would stand all kinds of outdoor exposure indefinitely.
This was accomplished recently with the perfection of a new finish Duco, by the chemists of the Du Pont Company. This material is made on an entirely different principle and with a basic material radically different from ordinary finishes. Its main constituent is liquid cotton made solvent by chemicals. When applied by automatic spraying machines Duco dries hard enough to touch in a few minutes. The resultant film is hard, rough, durable and absolutely waterproof. Cars finished two years ago are still in perfect condition. Locally, Duco is being applied at Willets & Hochul's shop, 327 South Los Angeles-st.
$150,000.00 a year through its operation. The Development Ass'n contends that fire fighting funds should be provided entirely by Legislative appropriation. Further conferences between the two bodies are planned.
DUCO WITHSTANDS
ROUGHEST WEATHER
It developed that the position taken by the Club relative to tax increase on motorists and a future highway program was endorsed by the Los Angeles C. of C. and the Motor Car Dealers' Ass'n. as fair and equitable.
Briefly the motoring organization contends:
That the past highway program has given So. Calif. only about 34 per cent of the expenditures for state highway development and about the same percentage of the state highway maintenance fund, whom approximately 50 per cent of all money for construction comes from this section and 57 per cent of funds for maintenance are raised in the 13 southern counties.
Strong opposition also is manifest toward the proposed legislation that will include some $117,000,000 worth of new roads in the 6,524 miles of the state system, when they remain $214,000,000 worth of work to be done before the 6,524 miles are completed.
The club sets forth that it is contending for a more equitable plan of financing, a standard of measurement that shall determine which roads shall be built by the state and which by the district benefited, a plan of improvement in accordance with travel demands, and a better plan of finance.
The figures quoted show that Southern California is on the same basis in the allocation of roads that it was placed in 1999 when the first bond issue for highways was voted. At this time the proposition of one-third to two-thirds between south and north was approximately correct, but in the intervening years So. Calif. has attained at least half the population, half the taxable wealth and more than half of the vehicles to be served by roads.
The conference was highly representative in that included 20 legislators, 35 county supervisors, 65 newspaper publishers, 69 C. of C. officials, in addition to mayors of cities and other public officials directly interested in the proposed highway legislation.
GAS OUTPUT AT
NEW HIGH LEVEL
Production of gasoline in the United States in 1924 reached the highest total in its history. 8,959,680,220 gallons, the Interior Department announced at Washington. The previous high mark of 1923 was exceeded by 1,403,735,077 gallons. Last year's domestic demand was 7,780,625,085 gallons.
CHICAGO—Vice-president Elect Chas, G. Dawes and family left their Evanston home today for Washington to participate in the inaugural ceremonies.

More than 130 automobiles are daily entering California from the east through the Yuma gateway. All cars at this point of entry as well as at other points of entry to California from Arizona are stopped and inspected, particularly for cotton lint or bolls in blankets or other carriers in the fight to keep out boll weevil.
