A Little Talk on Thrift
By S. W. STRAUS, President
American Society for Thrift.
Thrift and industry in the lives of most men constitute the difference between success and failure. A notable instance is the career of Abraham Lincoln.
When a young man, Lincoln ran a small general store in Salem, Ill. He failed in this business with debts of $1100. Then he disposed of the store to two men, taking their notes. They sold out everything of value and slipped away. Lincoln, the failure, was left with his $1100 debts, which in that day was a very large sum of money.
He went to work with thrift and industry. He skimped and saved. One of his creditors became obdurate, sued him and obtained a judgment. Lincoln's horse, saddle, bridle and surveying outfit were sold at auction.
Through the entire period of Lincoln's early manhood, from 25 to 40, he struggled with that debt. At last it was paid.
Lincoln could have taken an easier way. Like the two men who left him with the bag to hold. He could have disappeared from Salem. But the world would have lost its greatest statesman and humanity one of its noblest benefactors had he done so.
Throughout his entire life up to the time he became president of the United States he stood face to face with failure. Without thrift and industry he would have gone down to defeat.
At this time of the year when the civilized world is giving special thought to this man of the prairies it is of value to note that the towering strength of his genius would have been lost to mankind had it not been for his per-
KING GEORGE AND PRINCE IMPROVE
LONDON, Feb. 27—King George and his third son, Prince Henry, both contended their improvement today. The kink is expected to sail within a week for a cruise in the Mediterranean to complete his convalescence from bronchitis by which time his son is expected to have completely recovered from influenza.
The Prince of Wales will receive for the king during the March levees, it was officially announced today. The statement from the palace said that presentation to the prince will be considered equivalent to presentation to the king on these occasions.
"COLLEGE PRATS LIMIT STUDENT'S PRIVACY," SAYS BRITISH PREMIER'S SON
American college fraternities and sororities afford too little privacy to serious minded students; Malcolm MacDonald, son of Ramsay MacDonald, former Premier of Great Britain, declared in a recent talk before students in California in which he compared the university systems of England and the United States. He is visiting California as a member of the Oxford University debating team.
"At Oxford," he said. "a man lives alone in the living quarters of one of the 22 colleges forming the university. He has a look on his door and if he chooses to study night and day he can do so uninterrupted and with complete privacy."
He declared there was not a single chapter house, fraternity or sorority in Great Britain.
According to our observation, someone has been teaching the young idea how to shoot.

POLICE SEEKING YOUTHFUL BANDITS
CHICAGO, Feb. 27. A police traget has been thrown out over the Calumet district today to trap two youthful bandits who causally hold up nine Pullman car passengers on the New York Central railroad's Western Express last night, and escaped with loot valued at $10,000.
The holdup occurred as the train, Calicago bound, sped between Chesterton and Gary, Ind.
The bandits, the train crew reported today, had boarded the train at Toledo. They sat quietly in a day coach until the train neared Chicago, then making their way to the Pullman car, lined up the passengers and two members of the train crew, forced them to turn over their valuables and then chased out into the night on the train slowed down in the Gary yard.
