Texas, 1867, Scene of "North of 36"
Two great marches mark the history of the making of the United States.
The first was the trip of the covered wagons across the plains and mountains from Missouri to Oregon in 1849.
The second, although of equal importance, is not so well known.
It is the journey of the early Texas settlers, driving their cattle from the ranches in southern Texas to the railroad in the north.
It is this latter journey which forms the theme of "North of 36," an Irwin Willat production for Paramount, now showing at the California. The story of "North of 36," adapted by James Hamilton, appears on the screen as a faithful picturization of the epic story by Emerson Hough, who also wrote "The Covered Wagon."
The story opens in Texas in 1867. Cattle without number roam the ranges, but their owners are practically penitless, for there is no market for their herds.
Everything looks pretty black when news comes through that up "north of 36" where a railroad has been built the cattle can be sold at an enormous profit by anyone braving the dangers of the trackless plains, the Indian menace, swollen streams and a hundred and one other lurking perils.
Talisie Lockhart (Lois Wilson), orphan, young, beautiful and hereditary chieftainness of one of the largest and wealthiest (in cattle) ranges in the Lone Star State, decides to risk the venture and with her 4500 long-horns, 16 cow hands, 115 saddle ponies, etc., she hits the trail.
BREA NEWS
BREA, Feb. 25. (Spl.)—The P.-T. A. held its regular monthly meeting in the kindergarten building of the Laura school recently. Founders day was celebrated by a beautiful candle service, a large birthday cake was presented by the president, and the 28 lighted candles were placed on the cake by the teachers of the Laurel school and the officers of both the Laurel and Brea P.-T. A. Tea and cake were served by the grade mothers, Mrs. Teal, Mrs. Graybell, Mrs. Copeland, Mrs. Guard and Mrs. Lee Caulderwood.

Obstacle after obstacle is placed in their path. Over every hill a new and unforeseen menace awaits them. Day after day they travel in the scorching sun, across rivers and over prairies, through timber and hostile Indian country. "North of 36" is their cry.
How, after months of hardships, they finally reach the railroad town and the ultimate results following their arrival will go down in screen history as a thing never to be forgotten.
In addition to the four featured players, Jack Holt, Lois Wilson, Ernest Torrence and Noah Beery, the east includes such well-known playerms as David Dunbar, Stephen Carr, Guy Oliver, William Carroll, Clarence Goldert, Ella Miller and George Irving.
A Felix Cat cartoon, an International News and special musical novelty by Geo. E. Turner completes the program.

PROFESSOR NOODLES
Dear Professor:
My bride won't learn to cook a meal, and this has caused much strife, sir!
Now ain't it sure an awful deal to live with such a wife, sir?
Robert
Just live with her and do not fret—you have no cause to bawl, sir!
For if she cooked you might not get—a chance to live at all, sir!
