GLORIA SWANSON GOES TO HOSPITAL
PARIS, Feb. 18.—Gloria Swanson, famous American film star, was hurriedly and mysteriously removed from the Plaza Atheunne Hotel at 1:30 o'clock this morning and taken to a hospital where it was said an operation was performed.
Miss Swanson recently became the bride of Marquise De La Coudraye.
Film friends of the Marchioness and her husband, gathered at the St. Lazare Station to bid them farewell in their scheduled departure on the 10:05 a.m. boat train to catch the liner France for America, were astounded to learn from officials of the French line that Miss Swanson had been operated on and was in a hospital.
Miss Swanson's two children and their governess caught the boat train per schedule and will sail on the France.
Marquise De La Falaise De La Coudraye said:
"Dr. Vaudescal operated on Gloria at 2 o'clock this morning in his private hospital in the Boulevard Montmorency. The operation was entirely successful. He hopes Gloria will be able to leave the hospital within a week."
The operation became suddenly necessary last night as a result of Gloria's continual rehearsing of a film scene which necessitated her falling off a horse, which resulted in injuring her. Gloria's condition is complicated, however, by an operation she underwent two years ago."
The film colony in the Ritz tea room was puzzled this afternoon when it heard that Mrs. Adeline Burns, Mrs. Swanson's mother, sailed on the liner Berengaria this morning 30 minutes before Miss Swanson's children departed on the liner France. It was reported that Mrs. Burns had originally planned to accompany the children and their pictures were said to be on her passport.

Mrs. Burns bought her tickets late yesterday afternoon for the Berengaria, although French line officials said the France sailed with plenty of empty cabins and that Mrs. Burns could have accompanied the Marquis and his bride and the two children had she so desired.

THE PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIF.
WEEKLY REVIEW OF OIL INDUSTRY
By E. J. MUNGER
One of the biggest and probably the most important success was achieved from the Athens field this week by E. J. Miley. Miley's Athens 1 at 4906 two months ago came in a 900 barrel well but like other high grade gravity producers failed to stand up. The well was allowed to produce for a month. Miley was convinced that there was a deeper sand from which more production could be obtained. Drilling the well to a depth of 5238 it was put on production yesterday at 1500 barrels. The new producer puts a new complexion on the Athens District and will have a lot to do with immediate development work.
Among other new producers of importance added to the list of new Athens-Rosecrans producers are the Associated Oil Co.'s Haviland a 520 barrel well at 4909, the Barnedall Oil Co.'s Rosecrans 3, at 3951 a 1000 barrel well, the San Joaquin Oil Co.'s No. 1 a top zone producer at 4341 a 650-barrel well and the Union Oil Co.'s Howard Park No. 9 a 1000 barrel well at 4919. The total new production added for the week was approximately 4000 barrel and boosted the daily output of the Athens-Rosecrans Area to close to 16,000 barrels.
On the extreme northwest, northeast, and southwest area of these Athens-Rosecrans field test wells are drilling that will soon determine the extent of production. Out on the northwest front of the Athens Area the Shell Co.'s Leonis I has passed the 5300 mark without finding anything. The Standard Oil Co.'s Cowan I, the test well of the northeast is at 5900 and reports no showings. The Union Oil Co. is doing the pioneering for the southwest with a 6425 foot hole on the Gordon property. The Gordon's only showing was a slight one at 6200 feet.
The Marland Oil Co. of California is going to try out a new oil industry.
News Briefs
SAN FRANCISCO — Thirty days after his marriage Wednesday next, Henry Bartold, confessed bootlegger, must begin serving a 30-day jail sentence. This was the decision of Federal Judge Borquin after Bartold had pleaded guilty to a charge of bootlegging and begged the court to "go easy" as he was about to be married.

LOS ANGELES—The laundry mark "070" was the only clue to establish the identity of a woman found dead yesterday on the beach near here. The body was bruised, indicating the woman had been murdered.
SAN FRANCISCO—Two women
(Continued from Page One) prayers were flung out over the snail beneath which he lied. Soon the fact that Collins is dead will be only an incident, but the drama of the attempts to rescue him will hold the mind enthralled. And no matter what or may think or one may do, the "boss" who held the controlling stick will be the outstanding figure.
This man, Carmichael—member of the Royal Society of Art member of the French Academy of Science, the engineer who when others could not build ten miles of railroad in 80 days from Hermitage to Jacksonville did the war—the is this man who for two weeks, sleeps fraught with prayer, stood shoulder to shoulder with his son. The workers looked upon him and something electrical energized these men who went muddy, sticky, hazardous hot to dig their way to Collins.
"Dig and dump," Carmichael tells his story very simply—story of how he reached deep into a heap of rocks and fouled his man.
"It was Monday," he began. "I saw in the paper that a man was caught in a cave and sent a pick squad up from Rock. They phoned and told that there was a good deal disorder up at the cave and Tuesday I came down."
"I don't know how I charge. But no one was hurt Wednesday after the first in that we began to think sinking a shaft."

These Athena-Rosecrans field test wells are drilling that will soon determine the extent of production. Out on the northwest front of the Athena Area the Shell Co.'s Leonis 1 has passed the 5300 mark without finding anything. The Standard Oil Co.'s Cowan 1, the test well of the northeast is at 5900 and reports no showings. The Union Oil Co.'s is doing the pioneering for the southwest with a 6425 foot hole on the Gordon property. The Gordon's only showing was a slight one at 6200 feet.
The Marland Oil Co. of California is going to try out the east end of the Domingues field for a deep sand. The test well will be made at Marland No. 7. A 22-inch hole has been started and it is the intention to carry the deep well as far as mechanical means will allow. Domingue field developments now include three wells drilling by the Marand, Henderson Petroleum Corp. 1, the Shell Co. 12 wells, the United-Henderson two wells and the Union Oil Co. five wells. The output of the Domingues field now runs around 52,000 barrels daily.
Development work is moving rapidly in the new Baldwin Hills-Culver City field. Ten companies are in the new district and a total of 20 wells are underway. The Standard Oil Co. is leading the development work with nine wells drilling. The Standard's most recent completion, Los Angeles Investment No. 1-3 at 2519 feet is doing 175 barrels. On the Howard-Smith property the Standards test well No. 1 has reached a depth of 5900 feet and has not found anything that looks like production. To date no deep wells have made good in the Baldwin Hills District. Developments listed at Culver City-Baldwin Hills now includes a well drilling by Oscar Howard, two ocations stalked by the Pacific Oil Co., Mohawk Oil & Gas Co. starting No. 2, the Pan-American starting Cone No. 3 and No. 4, the Petroleum Midway down 1550 feet on Smith I and starting Moyniers I, and the Universal Consolidated spudding on Youngwnd I.
With the abandonment of the Laura J Oil Co.'s deep test well at Torrance all hopes for deep sand production has vanished. The Laura J drilled to 4780 tried out the well for two months and got little but a lot of water. The well produced a little oil and was that it might make good if the water conditions could be solved. It appears that the deep water sands and the deep oil sands are so close together that it is almost impossible to separate them with pipe and cement. The Laura J Oil Co. spent at lot of money and gave the project an exhaustive and thorough test. The Chanslor-Canfield failed to find anything in its 6500 foot Francis well and gave it up. The Shell Co.'s drilled Kerler No. 2 to 5300 and found nothing.

MORE WITNESSES IN DUST DAMAGE CASE
Disposition of cases brought by Charles M. Bean and George Cornwall, Fullerton ranchers, against the Los Angeles Paving company, on trial in Superior Judge F. C. Drumn's court at Santa Ana, seemed further from a goal today, the third day of the hearing, than yesterday, when it was expected the suit would be decided.
The plaintiffs, much to the surprise of those who had arranged the court docket allotting two days to the trial, were still calling witnesses today to supplement their contention that their groves were damaged to the total extent of $17,500 by fumes and dust from a rock crusher the paving company established on the Bastanchury ranch.
Belle Benchly, employed by the Benchley Fruit company, brought the company's books into court for one of the lawyers. She was only on the stand a few minutes, declaring that the books she had were those kept by the company.
They had not been opened, but before the plaintiff's case is finished it was expected they would be delved into in an effort to prove that the receipts of sales from the two ranches last year did not reach the total of those of the year before.
Robert Kelley, H. G. Miner and Ben Hemerly, ranchers in the neighborhood, testified they had inspected the two groves in question and had noticed the fruit on the side towards the rock erosher was not as heavy or in as good condition as the fruit on the opposite side.
