DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS
DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world...If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.—I John 2.15.
His thoughts are as thine own; nor are his ways
Other than thine, but by their loftier sense
Of beauty infinite, and love intense.
Wory on! One day, beyond all thoughts of praise,
A sunny joy will crown thee with its rays;
Nor other than thy need, thy recompense.
—George Macdonald.
HUMAN LIFE IS DEAR AND IS SO ESTEEMED
When one contemplates the many murders, one is inclined to feel that human life is lightly esteemed. But demonstration is being given that human life is not esteemed lightly. It should be remembered that murderers and potential murderers are comparatively few. They constitute a small minority of the population. The masses of the people are not criminal. The masses of the people are tender-hearted.
Take the case of Floyd Collins.; Literally millions hoped and prayed—for days—that the luckless man, imprisoned in a Kentucky cave, would be rescued. Men by scores have been ready to risk their lives to save him. Science and human ingenuity rushed to the rescue. All that human mind could suggest had been done to rescue this hapless man alive.
Great press associations sent out bulletins and long news dispatches, to the uttermost parts of the civilized world, recounting each event as the fateful work of rescue proceeds.
Why was this? Was Floyd Collins a distinguished person—a man of wealth, and power, and influence? No! Just a plain, everyday man. But he was a human being—entitled to a fighting chance to live and to enjoy life. Hence, millions sympathized with his plight. Multitudes would do anything they possibly could have done to rescue him. They had no motive but common humanity. They were actuated by nothing except the kinship of a common brotherhood.
And so it is in almost countless ways. Men, women and children—the masses—manifest their kindliness, their broad sympathies, their helpful impulses in divers ways. They contribute to the relief of famine or the victims of disasters, far and near. They give to Community Chests and other worthy philanthropies. They give—give—give, to the relief and the uplift of others. When a person, or a group of persons, is in peril, there are willing and eager volunteers to undertake the rescue. On land and sea, far and near, there are heroic, self-abnegating men and women who DO esteem human life highly and who DO forget selfishness, in the hour of extremity, and offer themselves, or their possessions, to save or to relieve others.
This is not a bad old world.
Humanity is not hopelessly decadent, by any means.

CoughRemedyMother Gave Us Still Best
Pine Tar and Honey Beat All Modern Drugs
In thousands of families it has been the custom for many cars to keep pine tar and honey always on mugs for coughs chest colds, bronchitis, spasmodic croup, and throat irritations. Our mothers knew that it was good, that it often broke up the worst cough in 24 hours, and that it could be given to young and old alike, and contains no narcotic harmful drugs.
And now we are told that in spite of modern medical discoveries there is still no better or quicker cough remedy. Doctors say the pine tar quickly loosens and removes the phlegm and congestion that cause the coughing also healing soreness, while the honey not only gives a pleasant taste, but helps soothe irritation.
The original compound, made up many years ago and used by millions of people, as Dr. Bell's Pine Tar Honey, is scientifically composed of just the right proportions of pine tar, honey and other quick-acting, healing ingredients which the best doctors have found to aid in quick relief. If you want get Dr. Bell's Pine-Tar Honey and no other. Only 20c. at any good druggists.

It was toward the end of a theatrical performance when one man turned to another and said in a harsh grating voice: "Look here, you have sat on my silk hat. It is ruined."
The other looked at the silk hat. It was indeed a wreck. "I am very sorry," he said, "This is too bad, but." he added, "it might have been worse."
"How might it have been worse?" exclaimed the first man angrily.
"I might have sat on my own hat," came the unfeeling reply.
A young man of nervous appearance, yet possessing a certain determined air, walked into a very ornate business building, hesitated a moment, and then with the sharp motions of one who is about to take the final leap, entered one of the well appointed offices.
"Is this Mr. Jones' office?"
"Yes."
"Is he in?"
"Yes; would you like to see him?"
"N-n-no! No, thank you! But could you tell me how long he will be here?"
"Why, he should be here at least three hours. But he can see you perfectly well right now."
"Thank you just the same, but I think I shall call on his daughter."

COLLEGES ARE FOR PROHIBITION—Dearborn Independent
"Light wines" put France at the bottom of the list in the Olympic games, with 26½ points, while the prohibition United States led the list with 255 points. Prohibition Finland won 166 points, while Great Britain won only 85½ points.
These figures are brought to mind again by the results of the debating tour conducted in this country by teams from Oxford and Cambridge. In their meeting with the debating teams of American colleges and universities the visitors proposed Prohibition and the League of Nations as their favorite subjects. Though judges presided over the verdicts in most instances were directed by vote of the audiences. Here are some collegiate verdicts on prohibition:
At the University of Michigan the audience decided that the Michigan debaters had worsted the Britishers, the vote being 1,247 to 520. At the University of Minnesota the vote was 1,348 for prohibition defenders, to 493 against.
At the University of Cincinnati the vote was 1,714 for to 698 against. At Coe College 437 to 95 against. At Hillsdale College 432 for to 88 against. At the University of Kansas the vote was four to one for prohibition. It would seem that Prohibition is capable of producing equally good records in the athletic field and on the debating platform.
GLEANINGS FROM THE BOOK OF LIFE
QUALITIES THAT INSURE SUCCESS
In the struggle for the means of enjoyment, which is, after all, the prime motive in life, there are qualities that insure success, Thomas Huxley believed these qualities to be:
Energy: Industry; Intellectual Capacitay; Tenacity of Purpose.
To these must be added: at least as much sympathy as is necessary to make a man understand the feelings of his fellows.
Were there none of those artificial arrangements by which fools and knaves are kept at the top of society instead of sinking to their natural place at the bottom," Huxley observed, "the struggle for means of enjoyment would insure a constant circulation of the human units of the social compound, from the bottom to the top and the top to the bottom.

"The survivors of the contest, those who continued to form the great bulk of the polity, would not be those 'fittest' who got to the very top, but, the great body of the moderately fit' whose numbers and superior propagative power enable them always to swamp the exceptionally endowed minority."
But it should be obvious that, whether we consider the internal or external interests of society, it is desirable they be in the hands of those who are endowed with the largest share of energy of industry, of intellectual capacity, of tenacity of purpose, while they are not devoid of sympathetic humanity; and, in so far as the struggle for the means of enjoyment tends to place such men in possession of wealth and influence, it is a process which tends to the good of society.
