MARSH STILL WATCHING LENSES
Only 10 p. c. of Motorists Have Had Light Tests, Claim
Anybody who might suppose that the State Division of Motor Vehicles was resting on its laurels and no longer checking up on lenses and other lighting devices, once it had put out its lists of banned and permitted articles, has another guess.
One recent case was in point. The manufacturers of a prominent lens agreed to alter its specifications to meet the law, and the division issued temporary approval of the lens, on the understanding that it was to be changed. But it wasn't, and Chief Marsh came down on the makers.
New lenses, as fast as devised and manufactured, have to be passed upon, too, so it is well for the car prospect to be sure his lens is legal.
Owners of cars manufactured prior to 1919 and lighted from electric lamps ruled in favor of Milton, Bordino Burn Up Track
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 14.—The speed kings have started practice on the Culver City speedway for the 250-mile race scheduled for Washington's birthday. The great Milton turned a lap at 135.5 miles per hour the first day he went out on the course with his car since he has had a supercharger added to the equipment.
Pletro Bordino, the Italian on the Flat, undertook to shatter Milton's mark and almost went out of the racing sport for keeps. The Italian blew a right rear tire as he was coming out of a turn at 132 miles and hour.

$1,500,000 IN CARSA ARE BURNED
Kansas City Pavilion Housing Show, Burns Early Today
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Feb. 14.—A million and a half dollars worth of the finest show cars America are masses of twister charred steel, the great American royal stock snow pavilion, valued at $750,000 is in ashes, one fireman is dead and further losses of accessories and trucks made a total of almost $3,000,000 as a result fire that swept the Kansas City Motor Show early today.
The dead man Captain John Crane, 65. The head of the horse drawn fire company in the city was crushed under falling walls and burned.
The cars shown last in Chicago were to have been exhibited Boston, March 7 to 14 and in San Francisco, Feb. 21 to 28.
The fire started in decoration in the accessories booths, supposedly from defective wiring only few hours after thousands of persons had left the buildings. It estimated there were 45,000 p

Owners of cars manufactured prior to 1919 and lighted from magnetos, under a recent ruling of W. H. Marsh, chief of the Division of Motor Vehicles, will not compelled to comply with the visions of the law requiring standard headlight equipment until Sept. 1, 1925. Under this ruling, owners of old types of cars will be relieved of the necessity of spending money on headlights equipment on automobiles which have become of small value because of their age. This ruling does not apply to cars manufactured since 1919 and all persons driving such cars without proper equipment on the highways at night will be charged with reckless driving. Second-hand automobile dealers will be permitted to resell cars manufactured before 1919 without re-equipment.
According to one local ignition man, only 10 per cent, say, of the drivers in and about Anaheim have had their lights tested again.
The Los Angeles County Motor Patrol has banded out some advice worth using, in this connection. It says:
"Give the same care to your headlights as you do to the air in your tires, or the oil in the engine, and occasionally go to one of the official headlight stations and inspect your own lights on the chart, making sure you are within the law.
'Do not misjudge the true intent of the certificate issued by official headlight stations.' This certificate only shows that at time stated on the face thereof headlights were properly adjusted. You must continually watch your lights yourself so that any maljustment due to vibration or collision can be immediately corrected. Any authorized headlight station will gladly permit you to use their chart to make these observations without charge.
We have provided a system of authorized headlight adjusting stations all of which are thorny familiar with the law requirements, and a complete list of these is herewith furnished for your convenience."
FOR IT-RACE CARD
With 11 events on the card, Ascot Speedway's management will stage another lively series of races tomorrow, if rain doesn't prevent.
The young stars have been doing some lively practice this week, and some swift work is anticipated.
Yesterday afternoon Ralph Ormsby did a single lap in 49 4-5 seconds, which equals the track record held by De Palma and Sigdahl the two former rivals. Fred Lecklider, "Fuzzy" Davidson, Chance Kinsley, George Beck, Floyd Roberts, Cliff Bergere, Johnny Kemp and others will be on the job tomorrow, also.
The Italian Colony Victory Crown and the Alhambra Motor Futurity will be among the races contested.
"The gob" race will be run in two qualifying heats and one final, and the Tony Martin prize will be awarded besides four money awards.
This race will be the last on Sunday's card.
Tomorrow's series will be the last in which Davidson, Beck and Kinsley will drive, the three having arranged to sail for Shanghai, China, on the 21st.
WTAM AGAIN HAS 389.4 WAVE LENGTH
The Willard Battery Station, WTAM, is back on its former wave length of 389.4 meters. The concern would be pleased to have dealers spread this information as much as they can. A. Bevillard of the Anaheim Ignition Depot was informed.
"The government assigns wave lengths in kilocycles. Ours is 770 which figures out the wave length as stated above. Previously, we referred to our wave length as 390 meters, but the government inspector of this district has requested that we make use of the decimal since so many new stations have come on the air interfering on the old wave lengths."

AUTO TITLE LAW NEAR IN ARIZONA?
An automobile title law is being considered by the present session of the Arizona legislature at Phoenix, according to a report given out by the theft bureau of the National Auto club. This law is similar to the one now embraced in the California Motor Vehicle Act. Members of the Pacific Coast Underwriters' Conference, which is sponsoring the National Auto club, are now conferring with citizens of Arizona who are behind this measure. According to the report given out by the club, the special protective features of the bill deal with proof of ownership of cars thru special certificates, which will be used by the state. Such certificates must be procured by all motor car owners of that state. In case of conditional sales contracts, the certificate remains in the hands of the legal owner until final payment is made. It would be practically impossible to make sales of cars under this class of protection, unless a certificate were produced and proper identification established. Judging from California's experience, and also that of other states where the auto title law is in effect, this law would facilitate the recovery of stolen cars as well as the apprehension of auto thieves.

"The sensational reduction in the price of the Overland 91 line, which was announced during the city pavilion, has been a major draw for customers."
SOUTH WILL UNITE IN FIGHT
A.C.S.C. Call Big Meeting Thursday in State Highway Scrap
Aiming to obtain a gathering of representatives from every section of So. Calif., in order to unite in "the fight for a just and equitable share in all highway development, before consideration shall be given to the amount of expenditure and the means to be used in further state highway financing," publishers of the principal newspapers, officials of the leading civic organizations, members of the boards of supervisors, state senators and assemblymen and many representative citizens of the 13 counties comprising So. Calif., are receiving invitations to meet the directors, advisory board members and officers of the Auto Club of So. Calif. at a dinner to be held at 6 o'clock Thursday evening next at the club headquarters in Los Angeles.
"A frank discussion of the highway problem of this state will do much to clarify the situation." said President W. L. Valentine.
HERE'S SOME DOODLE USEFUL TOMORROW
The direct course between port Beach and Huntington is still closed, due to the fast construction work on the bridge over the Santa Ana is not completed. Rapid progress is being made, however, and expected that this highway be open to the public by May. It will be a very beautiful following the beach line and be immensely popular, especially in the summer time. At the ent time motorists from New Beach to Huntington Beach the Newport Beach road at Mesa, drive north 3 1/4 miles Fairview over a new paved then turn west over Adams fair road, to Delaware Huntington Beach.
The Santa Ana Canyon closed from Olive to the bridge. A portion of the rises these points had pre-built. OVERLAND CUT
NO 1-DAY BARGAIN
"The sensational reduction in the price of the Overland 91 line, which was announced during the New York Automobile Show, has resulted in a great many interesting reactions, not the least interesting of which is the reaction so noticeable from some competitive sources," says John N. Willys in a letter to distributors, etc., received by George N. Nolan, Jr., Anaheim dealer.
"It has come to our attention that prospective buyers have been told that the sensational prices which we announced were in the nature of a clean-up proposition—that Willys-Overland was to discontinue the manufacture of the Overland 91 and concentrate its attentions entirely upon the manufacture of six cylinder motor cars.
"One of our own men was told by an ambitious salesman of one of our competitors that the prices which we had placed upon the Overland 91 did not permit us to make any profit whatsoever, and that it was a foregone conclusion that we were going out of the light car field.
"The least of our concern is what our competitors may guess about our product. We are concerned, however, with what they say about us, for some credulous buyer may be impressed by their statements. Therefore, we felt that you might be interested at this moment in a statement from me as to the position of our company for the coming year.
"We have just invested over a half million dollars in the dies and tools necessary to produce the Overland all-steel sedan and the Overland all-steel coupe, and if we could give our dealers the lowest priced automobile in the world with sliding gear transmission.
"As to our ability to make a profit on the 71 models at their present prices, we can only say that our competitors should let us worry about that.
"We are interested today in accomplishing two things—First, giving the public the most auto-judging from California's experience, and also that of other states where the auto title law is in effect, this law would facilitate the recovery of stolen cars as well as the apprehension of auto thieves."
A frank discussion of the highway problem of this state will do much to clarify the situation," said President W. L. Valentine. "In area, taxable wealth and population the state is divided into two approximately equal sections, the northern district composed of 45 counties and the southern district of 13 counties. The mileage of the present state highway system, however, shows but 36.5 per cent of that mileage in So. Calif., and of the $110,000,000 thus far spent on our state highway system, the south has received but 34 per cent.
According to figures of the state highway engineering department, more than $214,000,000 would be required to complete the present state highway system and these estimates show that approximately $143,000,000 of this amount, or 66 per cent, is required in the north; also that demands have been made for the addition of approximately 3000 miles of new roads to be added to the state highway system, estimated to cost $117,000,000, of which 73.5 per cent lies in the northern counties.
An even more inequitable distribution of state highway expenditures is found in the malastenance, reconstruction and widening work which is paid for directly by motor vehicle registration fees and the gas tax, as the records of the state highway department for the year 1924 show the expenditures in the 13 southern counties to approximate 24 per cent of the total, although the registration of automobiles shows that this section of the state pays 57 per cent of the taxation for this purpose."

DURABILITY OF TIRES UP 100 PCT.
Tires last almost twice as long and cost about half as much on the average as they did a decade ago, according to authoritative figures. The statistics show that the average tire consumption for a car each year at the present time is 2.74. The average in 1915, a decade ago, was 4.50 tires, or almost one for each wheel and a spare. Improved methods and the use of better materials in the manufacture of tires and the improvements made on road beds are considered to be the principal cause of this saving.
That the reduction of the average number of tires used per car results in a tremendous saving for motorists is realized when it is considered that 45,000,000 tires were produced last year, at an estimated wholesale value of nearly $700,000.
