Road Cost The federal government will spend an average of $4.70 on good roads for each passenger car, truck and motor vehicle in the United States in the fiscal year ending June 30, 1925, according to figures received by the Auto Club of So. Calif. The bureau of public roads states that exclusive of administrative costs, the government during the present fiscal year will spend over $10,600,000 more than was spent during the fiscal year ending June 30 last, when a total of $63,755,000 was paid out for highways. GAS BOOSTED AGAIN Many jumps in the prices of gas this week revived, still further talk of higher rates in So. Calif. In eastern Colorado the fluid rose 3 cents, in Virginia and the Carolinas 2 cents, one cent in Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, West Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia and half a cent in northwestern Pennsylvania. Young, president and manager of the Culver City Speedway, declares that never before has there been such a list of reservations on file ahead of the opening of the ticket sale, and he predicts that the coming race on Washington's birthday over the world's fastest speedway will have the largest attendance of any race meet in the history of the speedway sport in America, with the single exception of the great 500 mile race at Indianapolis. W. E. Heasley, whose address is box 65, Fellows, Cal., is the man who made the first reservation for the Washington's birthday speed classic. Although the box office does not open until Feb. 2, and reservations were not being taken at the time, the Fellows racing enthusiast sent in his order accompanied by his personal check drawn on the Fellows branch of the Security Trust bank of Bakersfield. The order called for four seats in grandstand "A." L. C. Ganzel of 402 South Manhattan Place, Los Angeles, did not use the malls to make his reservations, but called at the speedway office with a check for $64 and placed his order for an entire box, directly across from the start and finish line. Hoot Gibson, film star and one of the closest followers of the racing sport in the entire country, ordered two boxes and accompanied his order with a bank draft made out to the Speedway Corporation of Los Angeles. Another order came in from Henry Dainhardt of 504 North Bonnie, Brae, Los Angeles, and his tickets will go out by registered mail as soon as they are off the press. There have been many orders by phone, and these reservations will be held at the speedway's box office or at the Auto club of So. Calif., until they are called for by the parties making the reservations. BREAK UP RING OF AUTO THIEVES A report just received from Salt Lake City states that a ring of automobile thieves, operating around that city, has been unearthied. Two men have confessed to stealing eleven or more cars and robbing service stations, and weeks, very little snow, will be found there. Los Angeles Street BREAK UP RING OF AUTO THIEVES A report just received from Salt Lake City states that a ring of automobile thieves, operating around that city, has been unearthied. Two men have confessed to stealing eleven or more cars and robbing service stations, and they are now in jail waiting trial. A number of the cars recovered were insured and there are being turned over to the Insurance Offices for further disposition. In most cases cars so far located, have been re-sold. All of them have been considerably altered to prevent detection and identification, and the numbers were changed. One car, which has not as yet been located, is reported to be in the state of Idaho. It will probably be some time before all the cars and the altered parts are recovered, particularly in cases where bodies have been changed. MOTORISTS SPEND $700,000,000 The mammoth amount of $700,-000,000 was spent by the California motorists in operating their vehicles over a total distance of 10,122,000,000 miles in 1924, according to the Touring Department of the National Automobile club.] Mathematical compilation of the figures were worked out by L. How do these taxes compare with his assessments on other property and real estate? Is the motor vehicle owner getting off eary, or is he being stung? These are some of the questions that are being asked since announcement that a bill has been introduced in the state legislature providing additional taxes on motor vehicles for road building purposes. According to figures furnished by the engineering department of the Auto Club of So. Calif., the 17,000,000 motor vehicle owners in the United States paid taxes in 1924 of $555,000,000. Reducing this to individuals, it is found that the average tax per vehicle was $32.65. The average valuation per car is given at $845. Now comes the situation in California, where the average tax rate per $100 is from $1.90 to $2.02 for general city and county purposes. In addition to which means? It is now possible for automobilists to tour the city for a period of thirty days by plying to the collector's port for a permit longer necessary to obtain bonds, if the stay exceeds thirty days. Secure this permit, a must be presented and must be surrendered to dian customs officer at leaving Canada. The most economical man is a Class Ad in Accessories Man Changes Location W. H. Boon, whose accessories store for years has been located at 147 South Los Angeles-st., specializing on tire and motorcycle repairing, moved this week to the shop of S. R. Walter, proprietor of the Anaheim Vulcanizing Works, across the street at the head of Chestnut-st., where he will have charge of a new department to be opened, repairing of brakes, re-facing of clutches, etc. He will also have charge of welding. Walter intends to install a modern brake-lining machine equipment, etc. Boon will continue to repair motorcycles. Closed Car Sought More Than Ever The search of propietes is now almost wholly for closed cars, according to H. R Grove, Hudson-Essex distributor. "The realization that this is the age of the enclosed car grows faster and faster," said Grove. "All our salesmen and associates report the same thing—the public has made up its mind to have enclosed cars. Naturally when they think of couches they think of Hudson-Essex." "The buying of automobiles, like much other buying this year, is exceptionally active. There is a feeling of business confidence and cheerfulness—a feeling that a period of good times is here. However, taxes are generally levied on a 50 per cent valuation or less. Comparing this with the general property valuation, the tax on automobiles would have to be at the rate of $7.72 per hundred to produce a return of $32.65 per vehicle, or practically double the tax rate on real estate. Regarding the proposed further taxation of motor vehicles in the state, President W. L. Valentine of the Automobile Club of So. Calif. in response to an inquiry said: "We regard the motor vehicle as a means of transportation and regard this form of transportation as already amply, if not excessively, taxed. We so regard it because of the federal tax included in the purchase price, the personal property tax levied on it by counties and cities, the present registration fee and the present gasoline tax. "We are opposed to any increase in motor vehicle taxation except for purposes of maintenance and repair, and then only when it can be shown that present funds are not sufficient for that purpose. "We are opposed to any increase in the gasoline tax, weight tax, or any other tax for highway construction purposes. Seeing no need of increasing taxation at the present time for the purpose of maintenance and repair, we are also opposed to any increase in taxation on the motorist for these purposes." Hannum, of the Oakland Motor Car Co., has just issued the following announcement received by Harry L. Considering that January is always a dull month, following the activity of the holidays, Manager George P. Howard regards this as a good showing. Whether the local Buick crowd have put it over Santa Ana again is not positive, but Howard thinks they have. Howard admits that over a year's time the result probably will be different. Local distributors were optimistic today in discussing the month's business and the year's prospects. Upon presentation of the two certificates mentioned in proper form and containing correct addresses with the license fee, new license plates will be issued. Plates also will be issued upon presentation of the certificate of ownership alone (pink certificate) where the certificate of registration (white certificate) is not available. Crowell, who started with three or four used Fords, now has 14 or more cars on his lot on North-Los Angeles-st., which this week was tripled in size. Crowell has started selling cars for four or five other dealers. Harry L. Turton, Oakland distributor, enjoyed a better month than in December, in new sales, while used car sales reid up well. Turton deliver five Oaklands, to say nothing about orders and prospects used car sales. This doesn't very big, but compares very indeed with sales elsewhere. Ton put it all over the Santa Dealer, regardless of population. Everything is looking good with lining up for a profitable season, said George N. Nolan of the Old land and Willys-Knight agency on North Los Angeles-st. This took very promising for 1923. Nolan enjoyed a fair January. The Taggart Motor Car Co. (B. B. Rollette), Chrysler and Maxwell distributors, sold 12 new and 14 used cars during this month, the best month the firm has ever enjoyed here. In fact this total is as great as that of three other months that might be selected, during the time when the concern was breaking into new territory. "I don't see where this talk about dull business can go," said Follette. The Santa Ana dealers sold 10 new and 10 used cars. Charley Mann, Dodge distributor, sold nine new Dodges and three used cars during the month. Usually Mann sells almost ten used cars during the 30 days. The Santa Ana distributor, with a population to draw from several times as large, sold only 14 new Dodges; tho he had a good month in used cars, selling 28, it was learned. Frahm & Son.
