Plain Dealer An Independent Newspaper Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday PAUL V. HESTER Editor and Publisher Subscription Rate—In N. Orange-co., per year, $3; 6 months, $1.75 Entered at the Postoffice at Anaheim, Calif., as second class matter DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS Let us reason together, saith the Lord; though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.—Isaiah 1.18. I said in the meadow-path, I said it on the mountain stairs— The best things any mortal hath Are those which every mortal shares. —Lucy Larcom. GOVERNMENT IS SOUND AND HONEST The country is shocked—and quite properly so—at revelations of corruption in the state government of Kansas as it was in the gubernatorial administration just ended. Misconduct in public office should be reprehended strongly. The guilty should be punished. The people always should be keen of conscience as to these things. Public sentiment always should be antagonistic and condemnatory toward the corruptionist in office. But— Judgment as to these things should be based on common sense and common fairness. Condemnation should be reversed for those who are found guilty of corruption, beyond reasonable doubt. Because here and there an infit man gets into public office, the grievous mistake should not be made by the public of condemning public officials by wholesale. Public officials, generally, are honest, conscientious men, who gave faithful service to the public. It is cruelly unjust to class them with the comparatively few who are corrupt. The public, too, should take to heart the origin and the reason for corruption in some official positions. The people themselves permit the nomination and election of the men who prove to be unfit for office. Let the reformative agitation be directed toward the great numbers of good citizens who demonstrate bad citizenship by neglecting to vote. One confirmed pessimist, running at large, is capable of turning a great many persons into optimists. Lafayette, you were dear! Poor Lo! Deprived of his hunting grounds and left nothing but oil wells! "Darn it!" said Enoch Arden "And my mall-order pistol hasn't come yet." Still, affections that can be alienated can't be worth the sum asked for them. A hick town is one where a customer roars if the banker won't let him overdraw. You can't actually read men out of a party, but you can stop passing the pie. You can tell when you are on the right road. The cross roads have so few wrecks. It isn't always the thyroid gland that makes thieves. It may be a limousine complex. The military age is that within which civilians do mighty little clamoring for war. The less you pay for a car, the more it is worth after an argument with a telephone pole. By doubling the postal rate Uncle Sam might carry double the free matter for Congressmen without loss. SOMETHING NEW IN POLITICAL CIRCLES THE DESIGN OF ADVICE A SOUND BASE OF HOPE FOR THE FUTURE Ancient traditions, when tested by the severe process of modern investigation, commonly end fade away into mere dreams: it is singular how often the dawn turns out to have been a waking one, presaging a realization. Ovid foreshadowed the discourses of the geologists; the lantic was an imagination, but discovery represented in his work by Columbus, found a west world; and though the faint force of centaurs and satyrs have an latence only in the realms of creatures approaching man nearly than they in esse structure, and yet as thorough brutal as the goat's or horse's of the mythical compound, now not only known but noous. The oak is a more common thing than the little rudiment plant contained in the acorn; caterpillar is more complex than the egg; the butterfly than caterpillar; and each of these insects, in passing from its rudimentary to its perfect condition, through a series of changes, sum of which is called its development. In the higher animals the changes are extremely complicated; but within the last century the labors of such men as Huy Von Baer, Rathke, Reclé Bischoff, and Romak, have all completely unravelled them that the successive stages of development which are exhibited dog for example are now as AGRAPHS ROBERT QUILLEN money, fortunately, alk. does a sweetie really taste as a sweetheart did? ratorium and then 80 cafayette, you were dear! ABE MARTIN WHO'S WHO IN THE DAYS NEWS RAFAEL SABATINI English is an adopted language for Rafael Sabatini, whose novel "Scaramouche," a story of the French Revolution, was awarded the $10,000 Zukor prize as the best novel produced as a motion picture in 1924. His father, Vincento Sabatini, married an English woman who lived in Italy, and is now more fluent in Italian than in English. Italian was the language of Saatini's youth; his father spoke no English and his mother taught him only a few phrases. The historical romancer studied at the Ecole Cantanole in Zug, Switzerland, and at the Lycee of Oporto, Portugal. He began early to feel intense interest in history. He showed great facility in learning languages. This, he believes, nearly caused his ruin. "The fact that at 18 I spoke and wrote five languages with almost equal fluency, and possessed the foundation of a knowledge of a sixth (English) seemed to my father, who knew nothing about such matters, a splen did equipment for a commercial career." Sabatini says. So he entered business in England, and, for a few years was diligent. Then the urge to write came upon him. First he wrote for magazines and was overwhelmingly surprised to find that he could sell his stories. His first book, "The Loves of Yvonne," was published in 1903. Since that time Mr. Sabatini has been wholly devoted to literature. He is a British subject and married an Englishwoman. The Sabatinis have two children, a boy and a girl, both in their teens. It was almost twenty years after the first hook was published that Mr. Sabatini at last struck gold in "Scaramouche." Eight of his earlier novels had been imported into this country, but "Scaramouche", so the legend runs, was declined by seven publishers before it was undertaken by an eighth. "Are you married?" "Of course I am." "You have." A woman friend dropped in the other evening to chat with the wife, and was surprised to find the husband, enveloped in an apron, washing the dishes. "Where's the wife?" the visitor asked cheerily. "Over at the barber shop," came the grumpy reply. HEALTH & DIET ADVICE By Dr. Frank McCoy Author of "THE FAST WAY TO HEALTH" ICE CREAM is generally made with about the same mixture as pudding, namely: eggs, cream, corn-starch, sugar, and usually some fruit flavoring. If made in this way it is certainly not a wholesome food. However, it may be made at home from a combination of pure cream and eggs, with the addition of only a small amount of sugar. A small dish of this dessert may be used by the average person occasionally without fear of harm, but there is always a tendency to chill the stomach and retard digestion unless the ice cream is eaten very slowly. CUSTARDS may be used as a dessert if made properly, or they can be used as the main part of a proteld meal. Although it is not ordinarily advisable to mix two kinds of proteld together, it eggs and milk are properly mixed before cooking the proteld elements in the two seem to combine freely. I do not find this to be the case when they are used uncooked. No corn-starch or sugar should be added to this custard, but a few raisins may be used if desired, in order to impart a slightly sweet flavor. In place of the raisins a small amount of lemon juice can be added, and beaten up vigorously with the egg and milk. The custard should be cooked in a slow oven, otherwise the egg and milk will separate, but it is well to have the dish warm in which the custard is cooked before it is put into the oven, so that the cooking will start more quickly. If the egg and milk separate before the cooking is completed the custard may be taken out of the oven and beaten up again. It might even be necessary to do this two or three times during the cooking, in order to cook thoroughly thru. DOES YOUR WATCH KEEP TIME? IF NOT, BRING IT TO US! COMMENTS of the PRESS What Editors Are Saying HONESTY, COURAGE, COMMON SENSE—Sinceramente Bee Recently there was dedicated on the battlefield of San Juána, Cuba, a monument to Col. Theodore Roosevelt. It is a simple bronze pedestal, expressive of the gratitude the Cubans feel toward that great American, not only for the services he rendered in their war for freedom, but also for his steady and friendly influence in Cuban affairs while President of the United States. At the dedication ceremonies these words of Roosevelt were read: "Honesty first; but honesty is not enough. Courage; but courage is not enough. If a man is a natural born fool, you can't do anything with him. The effective citizen must have three qualities—honesty, courage and common sense." Roosevelt said many true and vigorous things in his long career of public service; but few more worth while remembering than those words. And he exemplified them in his own career. Honesty and courage were his pre-eminence; and to these he surely added that measure of common-sense which gave balance to his policies and character. GLEANINGS FROM THE BOOK OF LIFE BE BRIEF Brevity is the soul of wisdom, too. Ten words can be more potent than 10,000. Brevity is the reason why La Rochefaucauld, Frenchman, is one of the great writers of all times. A few less than 1,000 maxims is the sum total of his literary labors; but these brief jabs and terse peeings into the soul of humanity make him an immortal. These are some of his maxims: Those great And brilliant actions which dazzle our eyes, are represented by politicians as the effects of great reigns, instead of which they are commonly the effects of caprice and often the passions. Thus the war between Augustus and Anthony, which is attributed to the ambition they had of making themselves masters of the world, was, perhaps, nothing but the result of jealousy. We have all of us sufficient fortitude to bear the misfortunes of others. It requires greater virtue to support good, than bad fortune. We have more power than will; and it is often by way of excuse to ourselves that we fancy things are impossible. We promise according to our hopes, and perform according to our fears. We have not strength enough to follow our reasons. Truth does not do so much in the world as its appearances do evil. Everyone complains of his memory, and no one complains of his judgment. The head cannot long play the part of the heart. Men are more often guilty of treachery from weakness of character than from any settled design to betray. We often do good, in order that we may do evil with impunity. The only good copies are those which exhibit the defects of bad originals. We are never so ridiculous from the qualities we have, as from those we affect to have. The world more often rewards the appearance of merit than it does merit itself. When our vices quit us we flatter ourselves with the belief that it is we who quit them. 1000 SHRINERS TO VISIT ORANGE CO.
