TAKE CARE IN WRITING CHECKS In a campaign to educate the public in exercising more care in the writing and transmission of checks, the American Bankers' Ass'n, according to H. H. Benjamin of the First National, is furnishing some decidedly useful information. Benjamin endorsed all the advice the association, with which all of the five local banks are affiliated, and added some of his own. The mere endorsement on the back of a check sent by mail is dangerous. Benjamin declared, because whoever gets the check can cash it. The endorsement should say "Pay to the order of the——" followed by the name of the endorser. Pencils should never be used, because figures can be changed easily. Stores have a careless habit of leaving vacant the line on the face of the check "pay to the order of" or writing in "cash." A common error is in leaving vacant space on the dollar line below so that amounts can be changed. Don't keep stubs where others can see them, don't give strangers a chance to see your signature, don't write "certified" on your checks and watch strange checks marked "O. K." or in similar fashion. If the death rate in your city is greater than that, ask Akron, Ohio, how she reduced hers to 7.5 per thousand. Los Angeles Street AT Auction — 20-ACRE Ranch To Settle Estate of the Late Henry J. Schultz I AM INSTRUCTED BY THE HEIRS TO SELL AT PUBLIC AUCTION TO THE HIGHEST BIDDERS—ON MONDAY, JANUARY 26th, at 2 p.m. This 20 acres is located 5¼ miles west of Anaheim in San Diego, Calif., where the gentlemen are attending the Elks convention. Thomas Johnson, a negro baritone, will give an entertainment at the school auditorium Tuesday, Jan. 27. The entertainment, which is given under the auspices of the P.T.A., will consist of negro folk songs and dialect readings from Paul Lawrence Dunbar. The admission will be 35 centrals for adults and 15 cents for children. It is hoped there will be a good attendance. The Rev. E. J. Bulgin, who is holding a successful meeting in Anaheim, was here in Buena Park Thursday morning and gave an address. The sixth, seventh and eighth grades of the school were dismissed to attend and quite a large number of grown people were out to hear him and all enjoyed his address very much. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Miller motored to the desert beyond Barstow last Sunday. Miss Zoe Jackson left Friday morning for Ray, Ariz., for several months' visit with a sister. Warden Lockwood, who has been here and vicinity since Christmas, returned to his home in Santa Monica Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Glirvin and son, Charles, were Fullerton shopper Thursday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Wilsey, Frank and Ruth Willsey, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Thurman and Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Thurman went to Pomona Thursday to attend the funeral of L. T. Wilsey's mother. "I SELDOM GO TO CHURCH SERVICE" One man in Los Angeles gave this as a good excuse for refusing to contribute to a church building. The holicitor said to him, "You do not go to school yet you help to pay for school buildings. You seldom go to court and I have never heard of you going to jail yet you help to pay for court house and jail. Churches are as fundamental to community progress and prosperity as are jails and court houses. You should volunteer your full share in the provision of ample church and Sunday school buildings, even though you never go to church. It is wrong not to attend church. Do not double the wrong by refusing to bear your share of the cost of the churches of the community which benefit you and the entire city." A Class Ad will bring you results.
