YOUR CROSS WORD PUZZLE
HOW TO SOLVE THE CROSS WORD PUZZLE
The way to solve the Cross Word Puzzle is to fill in the white squares of the diagram with the words which agree with the accompanying definitions. The definitions are numbered to correspond with the numbers on the diagram.
Any word defined in the text under "HORIZONTAL" will begin at its number, shown on the diagram, and will extend all the way across to the first black space to the right of that number. That is, the word must begin in the square that contains its iden tifying number, and extend as far as the white squares continue uninterruptedly.
Any word defined under "VERTICAL" will also begin in the white space that contains its number, but will extend downward as far as the white spaces remain uninterruptedly.

STEAMER UPSETS
NOREOLK, Va., Jan. 21.—The Buxton line passenger and freight steamer Carisco, plying the James river, bound from Norfolk to Richmond, is reported to have struck a sand bar and turned bottom upward at a point between Richmond and Clairmont. The vessel left Norfolk last evening. It is not known here whether there has been any loss of life.
There was a sadness in the village.
There was sound of tolling bells;
There was typhoid in the water.
From the shallow surface well.

HOW TO SOLVE PUZZLE
The words start in the numbered squares and run either across or down. Only one letter is placed in each white square. If the proper words are found each combination of letters in the white squares will form words. The key to the puzzle—the first word—is given in the drawing. Below are keys to the other words.
Running Across
Word 1. A girl grown up.
Word 4. What you feel like doing when you hear lively music playing.
Word 5. A famous American general in the Revolutionary war, affectionately known as "Mad Anthony."
Running Down
Word 1. A woman whose husband is dead.
Word 2. You cannot get anything at the store without it.
Word 3. What relation to your father is the daughter of his brother?

Another reason for immunizing against scarlet fever is that the disease often leaves, as a sequel, kidneys that are seriously and permanently damaged.

They never learned anatomy or any physiology—and so we're strange to them. The only thing that we can do is try to fool these boys in blue—and here's the stratagem: Let's all disguise ourselves as cars, and this we'll get no bumps or jars—nor have a requiem!
