Chas. R. Forbes, former veteran’s bureau director, and John W. Thompson, St. Louis contractor, on trial in federal court on charges of conspiracy to defraud the government in hospital contracts, scored again today when Wm. D. Pratt, Kansas City contractor, gave the lie to testimony of Elias H. Mortimer, principal government witness. Pratt denied that he had contributed $5000 to a $15,000 fund of which $5000 was to be paid to Forbes in Chicago; Pratt had been associated with Thompson in the Colombian improvement syndicate, a $100,000,000 project. Organization of this great corporation was never completed. A Class Ad is best little salesman. and is under way. The public is cordially invited to worship here. M R. RUSSOIJAPANESE PARLEY SUCCESS TOKYO, Jan 10—Government circles were confident this afternoon that a virtual agreement has been reached in the Russo-Japanese parley now in progress in Peking. It is understood here that the terms provide that Japan is to receive fifty per cent of the oil and coal production of Russia. Russia agrees to apologize, it was said, for the Nikolaevsk affair and discontinue propaganda in Japan. Japan agrees to evacuate her troops from Russian soil as soon as physical conditions permit. Questions of debts and claims are to be left to future conferences. REPORTS CONFLICT LOS ANGELES, Jan 10—Conflicting reports today failed to clear the mystery surrounding the fate of the three alleged rum runners said to have been lost with all on board more than week ago in a violent storm off So Calif. Revenue officers today said two coast guard cutters have just finished a search for the Hakodate, Vance and the Malahat without finding any trace of the vessels. Only two alleged liquor runners, the Coal Harbor and the Chief Skugado, are now lying off Los Angeles harbor, according to the officers. At the same time it was reported that last night an unsuccessful attempt was made by a fishing boat to land 500 cases of liquor from the Malahat near Santa Barbara. The Malahat was one of the first ships reported lost. AT THE HOTEL VALENCIA Jack Brand, C. Cole and wife, P. H. Powell and wife, William A. Godshall, J. R. Pitt, H. R.
