SPENDS $20,000 IN SEVEN MONTHS
CLEVELAND, Ohio, Jan. 9—Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Elwell, facing poverty again but glad of it, today took up their life together after seven months of frenzied spending of a $20,000 prize awarded to Elwell, a commercial artist of Youngtown, Ohio, for naming a popular weekly, which culminated this week in Elwell's arrest on a warrant sworn out by his wife, charging neglect of his minor children. Then came a reconciliation, in a dingy court room presided over by a judge and probation officer. "There's only $550 left, but I've still got my health and hands," Elwell explained today. "I wish to God I'd never seen a penny of that money. It was nothing but a curse."
Mrs. Elwell echoed the sentiment, and the family of four children ranging in age from one year to nine played contentedly in the little home, where love's fires had been rekindled with the return to poverty and work.
When the prize cuek came, Elwell bought an expensive car. Then followed weeks of life in hotels, dinners in restaurants and the purchase of drinks at bootleggers' prices. Mrs. Elwell nagged, Elwell said, and so he left home.
The court, following Elwell's arrest, ordered the remainance money impounded in court, to be used for the children.
Elwell was looking for a job today, in place of the one he gave up when fortune raked at his door.
