LUMBER ADVANCE WILL CONTINUE Lumber of all sorts has risen five per cent or $4.00 per M in the last 30 days and may be expected to continue to rise thrust upon January, according to Herman Lohr, manager of the Gibson Lumber Co. All building materials in fact are showing a tendency to rise, and tar paper has advanced 50 cents per roll or 28 per cent in the two weeks. There are various causes for the higher lumber prices. One is the fact that the mills have been closed in the northwest for two weeks because of storms in the woods, interfering with logging. Another is heavy buying by Japan and the greatly strengthened eastern demand. The shutting down of the mills means that millions of feet are cut off the supply, and markets become completely cleaned up. Whatever happens will happen between now and Feb. 1, in Lohr's opinion, and after that price levels will be much more stable. All sorts of lumber, including redwood and Louisiana oak, are higher than they have been. And what applies to ordinary lumber, applies also to finished goods like shingles, etc. Since last July the lumber MELROSE ESTATE VALUED AT $20,000 Richard Melrose, pioneer Anaheim attorney, who died Dec. 10, left an estate valued at $20,000, according to a petition to probate his will filed by his son-in-law, Fred A. Bucks, Jr., of Anaheim. The bulk of the estate, it was understood, was in personal property. Under terms of the will, executed last October 14, Backs was named executor of the estate. Under the will Mrs. Jessie M. Backs is to receive $5000. Her brother, Allan Melrose of Mill Valley, in Merion-co., will receive $10,000, while the residue of the estate is to be turned over to another daughter Winifred Melrose of Anaheim. Suspenders are becoming popular again, but they are really loved only by those who call them gallows. A Class Ad is best little salesman market has been unsettled; prices have risen, but have declined again, said Lohr. The change in the price of tar paper and other building papers was a local condition, practically confined to So. Calif. Reports of a five per cent rise after Jan. 1 were discredited by Lohr, who said that no definite percentage of gain could be predicted. Shovel Snow With T.N.T. Char ESTES PARK, Colo., Dec. 25 Fall River road, over the central divide near here may clear of the ice and snow we block it in the spring by preening on a single electric button, in order by the work of scores of over weeks of time. A cordeau fuse encased in the entire route of the road Milner pass, and arranged made to detonate the seep charges of TNT, comprising fuse, simultaneously. Fall River road, one of highest mountain roads in United States, usually is paired with ice and snow until midmer, despite the work of clean crews throut the spring. The force of the explosion cording to forest rangers, will no more harm to the road the melting snows have done the past. Repair work on road has always been necessary. In places where experience shown snowdrifts accumulate worst, the cordeau fuse has augmented by charges of e-mite at 20-foot intervals. In manner, it is honored to ride road of 25-foot drifts which in most have kept it muddy due the greater part of the summer. The free ends of the fuse been securely fastened in trees at both ends of the pass, awaits electrical connection in the spire. A Little Talk on Th By S. W. Straus, President A Lubrication Questions Answered by ASSOCIATED OIL COMPANY Staff of Automotive Engineers Question: How much oil should I keep in the differential of my Ford car? Answer: Keep the differential filled to the overflow plug, but remember that the differential is one place where too much of even the best oil may cause damage as result of working thru the differential housings to the brake drums. The old oil should be drained off, the differential throly cleaned, and new, fresh oil introduced every two thousand miles. Question: I find it difficult to properly lubricate the springs of my car. What method do you recommend? Answer: Positive lubrication of springs may be secured by jacking up the chassis and applying lubricating oil while the springs are thus relieved of their weight. In this condition the spring leaves should open slightly in a fan shape. It may be necessary to spread the leaves a trifle with a screwdriver, knife, or any thin strip of metal. A few minutes work with a squirt gun, filled with half kerosene and motor oil, will cut the rust and leave a film of between the leaves. Question What is the best lubricant for spring leaves? Answer: There are many different types of oils and greases that will answer this purpose, so it is impossible to definitely state which is best. If oil is used, a very light or thin grade, preferably compounded with about 10 per cent of lard oil, will serve best. The lard oil will give this lubricant capillary, or creeping value, in this manner spreading the lubricant over the entire surface. If grease is used, the best product is one which will mix or saponify, with water—this for the reason that moisture from rains, washing, etc., will not remove the grease. Question: Is free wax present in oils of paraffine base? Answer: No, in the manufacture of paraffine base oils great parts is taken through pressing and filtering, to remove all the free waxes from the oil. Question: Is so-called "flushing" oil a lubricent? Answer: Oils that are sold under this name are not lubricating oils in the strictest sense of the word. They are very light oils and were primarily placed on the market to do away with the disadvantages of flushing with kerosene. These flushing oils, however, do not have the body motor oils have and the amounts which remain in the engine after flushing will have a tendency to dilute the lubricating oil. For best results, the oil in use should be used for flushing. Question: Is lubricating oil responsible for the gumming of valves? Answer: In many cases the oil is responsible for this condition, the reason being that too heavy a grade is used, or that the oil is not a properly refined one and due to the action of strong heat found on valve stems the oil will cause a gumy carbon-like substance which retends the action of the valves. The remedy is to thoroughly remove this gummy substance with kerosene. Flush the motor and refill with the proper grade of good motor oil. Straus, President American Society for Thrift Custom, habit and tradition are responsible for many forms of this applies with particular to the building industry which seasonal idleness is reliable for a tremendous eco-waste. Apply, effective efforts are being made to straighten out curves of construction activity. There was more building in United States last winter than any similar period in the history of the country. Not only was volume unprecedented, but the vintage of gain over normal for building was sufficient to create a radical innovation within the industry. Illimini figures now avail indicate that thrustout the building activities this year are proceeding on a scale keeping with the corresponding date a year ago. Benefits of stabilizing activities reach all lines business. When construction up every line of trade and industry is injured. When build-work goes ahead actively, all services is helped. The building acts as a balance wheel nation's business. Investigation has shown that time-honored falling off in work during the winter has been due almost entirely to customs, and tradition. It is needed more than anything in order to eliminate seasonal nations is public co-operation.
