SATURDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1924 ADDITIONAL STATE HIGHWAY REPORT SAYS NO PLATES TILL FEB. 1 Pink Certificate Required Says Marsh Denying Previous Report The Orange County Auto Club has been notified by Marsh in part as follows: Certificates of ownership if illegible must not be accepted unless accompanied by legible certificates of registration. In such a case the certificate of ownership must be forwarded to Sacramento. If the certificate of ownership is legible, it alone may be accepted. All commercial license applications must go directly to Sacramento or one of the branch offices of the State Division of Motor Vehicles. Deliveries of plates over the counter by clubs will start Feb. 1. The Auto Club of So. Calif. said Lost Any Gifts? Talk to A.C.S.C. Christmas presents that are lost during hurried visiting at the holiday time may be found and the owner not know about it, according to reports from the lost and found department of the Auto Club of So. Calif. Statistics show that the few days following Christmas reach the peak of the year for lost articles. Through the highly organized system of the Auto Club of So. Calif. hundreds of lost articles are restored to their owners so the club advises if some of Santa's donations are lost during the holiday season that its lost and found department be consulted before the owner gives up as gone forever the missing present. REPLACE LENSES NOW IS WARNING Car owners are advised by Ben Herr of the official Exide station not to wait this year until the last minute, as they did last, when cars were lined up four or five deep, to obtain their new headlight lenses. Delliveries of plates over the counter by clubs will start Feb. 1. The Auto Club of So. Calif. said it expected to get plates some time next month and could issue them list that pink certificate be forthcoming. Clubs cannot issue plates when the vehicle has been transferred. Because all transfers have to be verified against stolen record files. When the certificate is presented showing both the registered and legal owner, and legal owner has released equity, a fee of $1 for transfer must be paid in addition to the $3.00 fee. Whenever a new legal owner is created an extra $1 transfer fee is required. SACRAMENTO, Dec. 27.—The division of motor vehicles has not changed its recent ruling that the pink certificates of ownership must be presented or mailed before automobile licenses for 1925 will be renewed and will still insist that the nk certificate be forthcoming. This was asserted in a statement issued here today by Will H. Marsh, chief of the division. The statement said: "Reports to the effect that we have changed our ruling on the pink certificate have been widely published in a number of leading papers in California recently. These reports are erroneous and were unauthorized. As a means of protecting the title of cars we are insisting that the pink be sent in before we can renew. We are also asking although not insisting that the white certificate of registration be sent to shorten the time needed for verification of records." Where registered and legal owner are the same the transaction will be simple. All necessary such cases is to send both certificates with the fee to Sacramento and the plates and new certificates will be mailed in due time. "If registered and legal owner does not the same the registered owner should send his money and white certificate to the legal owner and have the latter secure the plates." In such cases the registered owner should send his white certificate and fee to the division and his application will be put aside until such time as we can properly verify from our records. After proper verification we will mail him his plates and send a new certificate of ownership to the legal owner appearing in our records. "I want to caution the motoring public that the above procedure will of necessity be exceedingly slow because of the volume of business. Persons who send in the pinks will get first consideration and will save themselves much embarrassment and delay. It will be much better for motorists to exhaust every means to get in touch with their legal owners. "The statement that automobile clubs and branch offices of the division may renew licenses on white certificates of registration is erroneous. These agencies are permitted only to receive such certificates and forward them to Sacramento for verification." No automobile club or branch office may start renewal of licenses until February 1st. The main office in Sacramento, however will from now on receive applications by mail. We urge motorists to send their applications with fees at once so that they can be put in shape and delivery made at the earliest moment. Our counters will not open until February 1st." NOTICE! But that is where Mrs. Bernard L. Strang chose to work hers. This was while waiting for her husband who is "Announcer B. L. S." for the WTAM dinner concerts broadcast by Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians from the Willard Storage Battery Station at Cleveland, says A. Bevillard of the Anaheim Ignition Depot. The result was a popular song written by Carmen Lombardo, one of the three brothers around which the Royal Canadian orchestra is built. The song was dedicated to Mrs. Strang, who, Lombardo claims inspired it. It is entitled "Cross Word Puzzle Crazy." The first night it was sung from WTAM a music publisher happened to be listening to the dinner concert. He hunted up Lombardo and contracted for the song before it was 24 hours old. CLOSED CAR NOW THING; SCHANHALS These cool days make an enclosed car more appreciated than ever, says Ray Schanhals, distributor of the Willys Knight and Overland in Anaheim and vicinity. The new Overland coach fills the needs of the small family for a weather-proof car as few if any other small vehicles do, in Schanhals' opinion. The seats may be removed, so that the car is admirable on camping trips, the low pressure tires make the car take the rough places easily and there is power galore for the bills. No better looking machine has ever been turned out by the manufacturers. A Class Ad is best little salesman. 5 OAKLANDS IN 7 DAYS ARE SOLD Five Oaklands sold in sevim days is the evidence Harry L. Turton has to show that Christmas business was good. This total takes no account of sales since Tuesday afternoon that may have been made. Clifford McCabe of 324 E. South street took delivery on Monday of an Oakland coach, the new model that has been making the trade sit up and take notice. Herbert Drake son of B. S. Drake, manager, the California Citrus Fruit Juice Co. is with Turton now as a salesman. Accessories for Xmas Sold Well "Something for the car" with special attention paid to accident prevention featured Christmas gift purchases this year, judging from the care and thoughtfulness with which holiday shopper are selecting purchases of motor car equipment and supplies at the Western Auto Supply Company. Articles that are theroly practical were in demand and was an easy task to make a selection as all automotive accessories owe their appearance on the market to their qualities of safety, beauty and economy. Safety-first necessities have jumped into favor, which doubtless is due to attention being focused on the increasing number of automobile accidents and the necessity for more careful driving. This tendency has found expression in the purchase of articles which will increase the safety of car operation and the lives of occupants of the machine. While the array of products that come under this classification is very extensive the more popular articles are bummers vinors, chains, spotlights, stoplights, fire extinguishers and rear view mirrors. Some men of thirty-five are such cut-ups that one takes them to be fifty. IN FAVOR OF EAST-WEST THOROFARE Amount, Not Principle of Gas Tax in Question Says Fiscus Putting himself on record for the first time in public, M. C. Fiscus of Brea, attorney of the Truce Owners' Ass'n, of So. Calif., today made a strong plea for an East-West State highway in Orange-co. to supplement the Whittier boulevard and the coast road. Fiscus in fact favors an additional state highway or state highway link in all counties where they are necessary and practicable. The matter has been broached repeatedly in different parts of the state in connection with discussion of the use of the funds of the gasoline tax. Regarding the tax Fiscus said: "The gas tax is the fairest that could be devolved. Everybody pays it, tourist as well as our local peo- INFED $100 FOR RECKLESS DRIVING J. R. HANDLE AUTO TAX FUNDS' Declaring it an imposition to compel Orange-co. residents to go to Los Angeles for their license plates, if they want them direct. M. C. Fiscus, attorney of the Truck Owners' Ass'n. of So. Calif., today asserted that every county seat should be supplied with the plates required for the people of the country. Why Los Angeles and San Diego counties should have the advantage of Orange-co. in this respect Fiscus declared he couldn't see. The attorney came out in fact for a complete handling of funds from all taxes at county seats. He said he saw no reason why the necessary employees should not be stationed in each county instead of being concentrated in the State Division of Motor Vehicles at Sacramento and its branches. In this way there would be a single handling of the funds of each county at home, and one check would be sent by county assessors to the state capital. In that case one of our county officers could act for the state. Regarding the year's program of his organization Fiscus said that the Ass'n would like to see the State Motor Vehicle Act made a part of the curriculum of every high school. The Ass'n plans next year to have nearly a dozen traffic schools instead of a limited few (Continued on Next Page) West State highway in Orange-co. to supplement the Whittier boulevard and the coast road. Fiscus in fact favors an additional state highway or state highway link in all counties where they are necessary and practicable. The matter has been broached repeatedly in different parts of the state in connection with discussion of the use of the funds of the gasoline tax. Regarding the tax Fiscus said: "The gas tax is the fairest that could be devided. Everybody pays it, tourist as well as our local people, the driver of the passenger car as well as the truck owner. The amount of the tax is a matter that must be carefully determined." "The principle of the gasoline tax is all right. And the amount of it must be based upon something." "Our Ass'n never has taken a stand in the matter." "But the county and municipality should each get its fair share of the revenues accruing from the tax. The city and county should each get one-fourth and the state one-half." Regarding the use of funds Fiscus, without taking a decided stand like that of the Auto Club of So. Calif., on the principle that the distribution should be strictly in proportion to traffic and amount paid, whether thru the gas tax or the license fee or any other means, said that certain counties undoubtedly were too poor to pay their fair share of the expense of state highwaysthru them, but that such roads were absolutely necessary for the rest of the state in the course of state-wide traffic. At the same time Fiscus called attention to the fact that the gas tax alone had raised more than had been expected in the first three-quarters of the year (Continued on Next Page) The COACH as Buick builds it is a smart-looking closed car.
