WEEKLY REVIEW OF OIL INDUSTRY
By Ellwood J. Munger
E. J. Miley, the man who found the first production for the north-west Athens-Rosecrans field, is going to deepen his famous Athens' No. 1 and ascertain the depth of the oil sand. Athens 1 was put on production about a month ago at 4247 and is supposed to have about 36 feet of oil sand. The well like other big high gravity producers has not held up on production and it is thought that deepening may open up more of the oil sand and give the well a chance to make a real showing. The redrilling and deepening of the well to open up all the sand will be of as much importance to the field as the original discovery and the extension of the northwest area.
The Barnsdall Oil Co.'s O'Dea 2, making a water and production test of the 10" at 4142 made the largest flow of any well yet tried out in the Rosecrans field. O'Dea 2 made 41 gravity oil at the rate of 2000 barrels for a short time. Water broke in and spoiled the performance.
The General Petroleum Corporation has its Vaughn No. 1 back on production. Vaughn 1 was drilled to 4773 but on account of water trouble had to be plugged back to 4871. The well is making 306 barrels, 37 gravity. Amstoy 1, the deepest test well in the field at 5431 has a strong of drill pipe stuck in the hole that may mean the loss of the well.
Out on the northeast line of field the Standard Oil's Cowan No. 1 has reached the 5500 mark

test in a few days. Laura J was drilled to 4780 and the bottom water was found to be coming in at a point about 80 feet off bottom. The well has shown some oil and looks rather good.
Drilling on the Chanslor-Camfield Midway's deep test well Francis 1 now at 8528 may have to be discontinued on account of mechanical difficulties. A twist of 500 feet down left almost 6000 feet of drill pipe in the hole. The well has had no showing and its loss may not bother its owners very much. Francis is the deep test well of the West end.
The Shell Co. of Calif. is abandoning its Keystone well at 3842. The well made some production and was the first to open up the extreme east end of the field. Sand trouble and small output made the well an uncommercial proposition.
Long Beach production took a severe decline this last week, production figures showing a 5000 barrel falling off. The field output is now running at 125,000 instead of 131,000 barrels. This is the heaviest decline the field has ever experienced and is no doubt the cause of some anxiety on the party of Signal Hill producers and developers.
Huntington Beach came back this week with two good wells. One a redrill and plug back by the Milley-Keck Oil Co., yielded 800 barrels, the other a new completion by the General Petroleum started off at 800 barrels. The plug back well was No. 42 Milley-
MANY WOMEN SUCCEED ON FARM SURVEY SHOWS
There are more than 1,000,000 women engaged as farmers in the United States, approximately 20 percent of whom are owners and managers of their own farms, specializing in dairying, truck gardening, poultry, fruit flowers or bees, according to the Bureau of Vocational Information, which has just completed a survey of the training available to women in twenty-three professions and allied occupations.
The survey, it is explained, was made possible on a grant from one of the educational foundations and is the most important of a series of surveys published by the bureau dealing with occupational opportunities for women.
After considering more than 8,000 training courses the bureau has prepared not only a "selected list of training facilities" but indicated for each field the types of training which are coming to be generally accepted as the basis.
It also shows the training opportunities for women which meet the standardized requirements in each profession in every state, with a summary of the occupational opportunities, the preparation required, the reward offered, the methods of entrance and the lines of promotion.
While nearly 2,000,000 women are engaged in business, only 2 per cent are owners, managers, formers and overagers, the survey shows. This is laid to the prejudice against giving women administrative experiences and to women "too frequent temporary attitude toward business." Women are warned against the tendency to train for technical
Water broke in and spoiled the performance.
The General Petroleum Corporation has its Vaughn No. 1 back on production. Vaughn 1 was drilled to 4773 but on account of water trouble had to be plugged back to 4671. The well is making 206 barrels, 37 gravity. Amstor 1, the deepest test well in the field at 6491 has a strong of drill pipe stuck in the hole that may mean the loss of the well.
Out on the northeast line of field the Standard Oil's Cowan No. 1 has reached the 5500 mark without finding any oil. Across on the southwest line of the field the Union's Gordon is drilling at bore and nothing to show. This two wells seem to be setting some field limits.
Associated Oil Company success at Dominguez continues without a break. In addition to bringing in California's biggest oil well at De Francis No. 2 the Associated has just completed an 82 day job on De Francis No. 2 and brought in a 3800 barrel well. De Francis No. 2 was drilled to 4269 and is making a 34 gravity product.
The Birch Oil Co. is not ready to quit Dominguez yet. The test will on the Humphries property is now nearing 5800 and to date has not had anything encouraging. It is the intention to go to 6000 feet.
In the proven area of the Dominguez field the Shell Co.'s Hellman is still going after a deen sand. Drilling is now at 5840 and the showings are not particularly good.
The Superior Oil Co. led the producers of the Torrance field this past week with a 350 barrel well. Completing Torrance No. 52 at 3813 a 19 gravity producer resulted. The Petroleum Securities Co. has another small producer on the Kleinmeyer lease at No. 14 a 100 bbl well.
The Laura J Oil Company is believed to have located the source of the water in its deep sand well Dominguez I and will have the well in position to make a production barrel falling off. The field output is now running at 128,000 instead of 131,000 barrels. This is the heaviest decline the field has ever experienced and is no doubt the cause of some anxiety on the party of Signal Hill producers and developers.
Huntington Beach came back this week with two good wells. One a redrill and plug back by the Miley-Keck Oil Co., yielded 800 barrels, the other a new completion by the General Petroleum started off at 800 barrels. The plug back well was No. 42 Miley-Keck; 42 stod originally at 4750 feet and was plugged back to 3950 to produce from the middle zone. Dabney No. 3 completed by the General Petroleum Corp. at 2267 is one of the best producers of the east side of the field.
The old Montebello field staged something of a come back last week when the Standard Oil Co. completed a 700 barrel well on the Temple lense. Six years ago the Temple property contributed some of Southern California's biggest wells. Temple 15 was drilled to 3778.
The northeastern end of Rideout Heights is not looking very good with the Standard Oil Co.'s Patten 1, drilling at 5800 feet and not finding anything. The Petroleum Midway's Seward-Rideout has been plugged back to 3993 and trying to get a little production up above. The fluid level is at 850 feet but to date the well has not done anything.
The Shell Co.'s Seal Beach well Bryant No. 1 showed a big production increase last week. The increase noted was from 75 barrels to over 100 barrels. The water content showed a corresponding decrease. With two well-drilling and a third starting Seal Beach is taking on the appearances of an oil field and it appears that the Shell Co. seems to know what it is doing.

PROFESSOR NOODLE
Dear Professor:
Some folks in France,
I understand,
heard female singing
from this land
upon their radio!
I wish you'd state
the singer's name,
for no one seems to
know this dame—
she sang incognito.

I'll bet this was the girl next door! No other voice, I'm sure,
could soar as far
her's will go!
She's taking vocal culture now,
and when she starts
to shriek, I vow,
she needs no radio!
