BOMBSHELLS ON FOOD CONCEPTIONS Business and professional men are popularly supposed to bolt their noon day meal with never a thot to dieteties until acute indigestion lays them up. Yesterday 50 men at the Anabeim City club listened attentively to Dr. Frank McCoy, "orange juice doctor," explode a few bombshells on popular conceptions about foods. "Unbelievable results are obtained from orange juice," declared the doctor. "With 5,500,000 red blood corpuscles normal, if they have dropped to 4,000,000, by eating nothing but a dozen average sized oranges for nine days the number will increase to 5,000,000." "Nothing also known today will more quickly alleviate acute rheumatism, when the joints have begun to change and the individual is twisted out of shape, as will an 'orange juice fast.'" "It has been a popular superstition that orange juice and milk could not be taken together for fear of the acids. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Los Angeles soda fountains are selling 'orange-milk' and 'lemon-milks', a combination of orange or lemon juice and milk to suit the taste, mixed with a soda fountain machine or in an oldfashioned milk shaker. Probably the most popular orange-milk is half milk and half orange juice. Of course, not so much lemon juice is palatable." "To digest, milk must first curdle. The citrate causes it to form in small curds when it hits the stomach." "Drunk alone, milk should always be swallowed ivory slowly so the curds will be small, and more readily digestible. If milk is gulped down, it forms in large curds. When I can't get a patient." 5000 MEN RECEIVE $500,000 XMAS GIFT SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 17.—Approximately 5,000 men on the Pacific System of the So. Pac. Ry. will receive a Christmas gift in the form of a $500,000 annual wage increase as a result of the successful completion of negotiations between the representatives of the firemen and engineers and the company management. The increase which approximates 5 per cent for the men engaged in engine service is retroactive to Sept. 1, when the old agreement between the unions and the company expired. It is effective for a year or until abrogated by notice from either side thereafter. Men in the passenger service will receive 24 cents additional a day; those in the freight service 36 and yard service engineers and hostlers 32 cents. There will be no change in working conditions. ESCAPES PRISON SAN QUENTIN, Dec. 17.—An all night search of the surrounding hills today had failed to reveal a trace of Harry Eyer, who escaped from the state prison here last night by sealing the jute mill wall with a rope. Eyer, serving a term of from one to ten years for assault with a deadly weapon, was employed in the jute mill and last night "hid out." His absence was not noted until the 8 o'clock check-up and investigation revealed the rope over the jute mill wall by which he had escaped. His description was broadcast over the west today. Eyer was committed from Los Angeles-co. CALIF. HOTEL, FULLERTON E. Stein, O. Pette and T. D. Lynn, Los Angeles; J. O. Strand, San Diego, and B. L. Joyce, Santa Ana.
