YEAR'S CAR SALES OF WORLD SPEED MARKS TO VANISH Mad Fight Tomorrow At Culver City Track Opening With world's records broken again and again and again in the practice tests on the new Culver City tract, the opening of which was postponed last Sunday until tomorrow, the greatest battle among the speed demons in the history of the Southland is anticipated. 135.5 M.P.H. Is Driven by Hartz A new world's speed record was established again yesterday at the Culver City track, when Harry Hartz in a Durant Special, with a Miller Supercharger, did a lap in 33 1-5 seconds which is at the rate of 185.5 miles an hour. The mark will not stand, because Hartz was timed by his pit crew. Later, with some of his driving mates timing him, Hartz hit 133-9 miles an hour for a lap, the same figure as Benny Hill, but only semi-official. SPEEDY DRIVING OF CARS IS COSTLY When you try to go fast in traf file you really are gaining nothing, according to a series of tests made by scouts of the touring bureau of the A. C. S. Mad Fight Tomorrow At Culver City Track Opening With world’s records broken again and again in the practice tests on the new Culver City tract, the opening of which was postponed last Sunday until tomorrow, the greatest battle among the speed demons in the history of the Southland is anticipated. Benny Hill on Wednesday in his Miller Special turned a lap in 33.3-5 seconds or an average of 133.9 miles an hour for eight laps, bettering his former mark made last week Friday of 132.3, while Tommy Milton the same day, also in a Miller Special, completed a lap in 33.4-5 seconds at a speed of 133.1. Hill drove eight consecutive laps; all of them under 34 seconds—that is, be went 10 miles at an average speed of 133.5 miles. There are half a dozen other American riders, the best that the country affords, who should be equally formidable, while De Palma and Pietro Bordino, the Italians, have never shown such metal as recently. In the series of world smashing records established in practice by various stars, Bordino was one of the holders of the new-marks. The track is said to be the fastest ever built. It is designed differently. There isn’t a sharp turn in the entire length of a mile and a quarter, and turns are so steeply banked that machines can be driven at their top speed. OAKLAND COACH NEW MODEL, HERE Three orders the first day were received by Harry L. Turton for the Oakland coach, a new model, the first of which reached Turton on Tuesday. With whipcord upholstery in a handsome dark green, sagebrush green Duco enamel finish, real Fisher body, large doors admitting convenient exit and entrance, low pressure tires, four wheel brakes, control of gas, dash light etc., at the center of the steering wheel, and other features this new model will make the Oakland more popular than ever before, says Turton. Four disc wheels are also part of the standard equipment. ANAHEIMER LAUDS FORD DUMP TRUCK Hail to the Ford one-ton dump truck. It holds up better than some of the heavier trucks and will go as far with a load. SPEEDY DRIVING OF CARS IS COSTLY When you try to go fast in trafle you really are gaining nothing, according to a series of tests made by scouts of the touring bureau of the A. C. S. C. through the congested districts of Los Angeles. These demonstrated that it is extremely doubtful if the time saved by hurrying and exceeding the speed limit pays for the extra gasoline used and the brake lining worn by the drivers trying to cut down time. Not only is the time saved fractional, but the hurrying motorist endangers not only his own life and car, but thousands of other lives and tens of thousands of automobiles. Records of scouting cars that were operated on three different routes thru the city limits of Los Angeles, furnished these conclusions. In order to make the tests impartial and accurate each route was first traversed at highest speed possible and yet escape arrest, the car exceeding the limit in 15 and 20 mile zones by 5 miles wherever possible, and taking advantage of every occasion to make time. The same driver went over the same route a second time, observing speed laws absolutely and conforming strictly to the mandates of the law and rules of safe and efficient driving. A summary of these trips over different routes across the city and back again shows that the driver who hurried and endangered life, limb and property saved only a total of 10 minutes out of two hours’ driving, or a fraction over five minutes to the hour. The total distance of the three routes across the city was 31.5 miles, or an average of 10.5 miles to the trip, one showing a saving of five minutes, another three minutes, and the other two minutes. Police department officials and traffic experts from these tests point out that in driving to save a possible five minutes over a ten mile trip, drivers are using extra gasoline, wearing out brake linings, throwing courtesy to the winds, risking arrest with a fine or jail sentence, and inviting accidents, not only to their own cars and persons, but forcing hazards in to way of touching others in way of touching vehicles and threatening limb and life of pedestrians, many of whom are children. Charley Kuchel, City Recorder and Justice of the Peace, today gave an instance involving what might have been a fatal accident. Fred A. Rupert, local real estate man, was driving south on N. Olive when some young fellows came along on Chartress street, driving at the rate of 50 miles an hour, according to Rupert. The fenders of the two cars just grazed, but an accident was averted because Rupert pulled aside. Rupert turned, and when he reached Center met the same car going as fast as ever. Automobile fines alone in Recorder's court amount to $571 for the 11 court days ending yesterday. At this rate December total will amount to more than $1000. Two half days reduces the 11 days to 10 in fact. Judge Kuchel mentioned last night's instance to show that far from rolling up collections by unreasonable prosecutions, the city authorities really only arrest a fraction of the offenders. This is expected to be particularly true of the closed models, whose popularity has not yet approached that of the open touring car. The principal cuts were made on the sedan and coupe. The Dodge, the company points out, in a statement reaching Charley Mann, local distributor, embodies more refinements now than ever before, improvements being particularly to the car's rideability. For several months this year production was at nearly 1,000 cars per day. This mark will be exceeded next year, it is confidently hoped. The new building will be five stories high and 120 feet wide by 400 feet long. It will house the complete engineering shops of the company. Goodyear officials stated that this was the first step toward relocating departments of the factory to secure greater operating efficiency and to increase the production output of the plant. In a statement to Goodyear dealers G. M. Stadelman, president of the company, verified reports that the company was planning definitely for a substantial increase in business in 1925. "With the many improvements in construction process, automobile tires today are giving a much longer mileage than was the case formerly," said Stadelman. "Indeed it is no exaggeration to say that the great volume of replacement tires for new automobiles does not come until the second year after the public's purchase of new cars. The year 1923 saw the biggest increase in car registration in the nation's history. Consequently there is every reason to expect a substantial increase in tire buying during 1925." "The most important single phase of 1925 tire merchandising, in my opinion, will be the balloon tire. The swing over from high pressure tires to balloon tires which began during the present year will become much more marked during 1925."
