MUNGER A big gas well not producing any oil was what the Miley-Marland Co. experienced at Athens-Rosecrans yesterday when Miley-Marland No. 1 was put on production at a depth of 4422 feet. This is the first gasser of any capacity the field has ever produced. An estimate on the gas well is eight million cubic feet. The owners would have much preferred to have an oil well. It is thought that the well will develop into oil later. Drilling by the General Petroleum Corporation in the central west section of the field has reached a depth of 6345 feet on the Amstoy well. The outlook does not appear to be as good as it was up around 5908-6000. Out on the northwest area of the field excitement has been intensified by the good showings the Sentinel Oil Co.'s Brown well has gotten in the last few days. At 5201-5205 some very good looking sand was exposed. The sand looks like the same material from which the famous E. J. Miley No. 1 is getting its production from. Joseph Dabney has quit drilling on his northwest extension well at a depth of 5527 feet. The well has had no showing of any importance and even though production was found the owner does not consider that sufficient oil would be taken from the well to pay for the cost of drilling. The Julian Petroleum Corp.'s Athens 1, seems to have the making of a nice well. Drilled to 4918 the well began showing a rich sand at 4905. Julian should get as good a well as the Miloy Athens 1, the well that proved up the northwest and brought production out to 124th-st. The Associated Oil Co. is happy over the outcome of its first well on the De Francis property at Dominguez. DeFrancis 4 completed at 4300 feet is doing better than 2100 barrels and proves the propensity to Wrongdoers Who Cross Path of Atlanta Cops After They Are Armed with Tear Gas. CAMPAIGN UPON RATS PROGRESSES The local campaign against rats is meeting with enthusiastic cooperation, it was announced today by Dr. George A. Paige, city health officer. The campaign is in charge of Wm. P. Webb, sr., and has already covered most of the packing houses, the city dump and the greater part of the industrial district. In only one instance, that of a prominent Greek restaurant, has there been any opposition, Dr. Paige said, and the law gives the health officers the authority to go ahead there at the proprietor's expense. Dr. Paige said that Mexicans have shown interest in the work, and have a credit and example for GINNING RECORDS CALEXICO, Dec. 16—4,459 bales of cotton was at Mexicall and Calexico seven days, according to compiled today. The total season is 57,076 bales. The lower Colorado Gin leads all other with a total 900 bales. Unprotected metal rusts in the tropics. The Julian Petroleum Corp.'s Athens 1, seems to have the making of a nice well. Drilled to 4918 the well began showing a rich sand at 4905. Julian should get as good a well as the Miloy Athens 1, the well that proved up the nowthwest and brought production out to 124th-st. The Associated Oil Co. is happy over the outcome of its first well on the Da Francis property at Dominguez. DeFrancis 4 completed at 4400 feet is doing better than 2100 barrels and proves the property up nicely. The Holly-Development Co. of Long Beach owns a half interest in the property. The Marland Oil Co. has another producer now at Dominguez. Dominguez No. 2 completed at 4286 is a 1450 barrel well. The Marland has Deminguez No. 4 and 5 drilling and No. 6 standing cemented. Interest in deep drilling at Dominguez will not subside until some disposition of the Shell Co.'s Heilman 1 is made. Heilman 1 is now drilling at 5775 and continues to show streaks of oil sand in the shale. A half a dozen or more wells were completed at Torrance this past week. The output of these producers ran from 30 to 115 barrels. The Petroleum Securities Co. put the little ones on production at the Kleinmeer property, No. 6, 7, and 9 doing 50, and 30 barrels respectively. The Petroleum Midway completed a 70 barrel well on the Brown property. The Chanslor-Canfield's Torrance 78 contributed a 15 barrel well. Deep development work at Torrance continues in spite of the poor showings made by the several test wells. The C. C. M. O. is leading with its west-side or Redondo well making hole at 6450. The Shell Co. is next with its Kettler 2, making hole at 5200. Neither well has had a showing of any kind. The Laura J is fairing a little better it seems. The L. J. is down 4765 feet and has had showings that look like they were sufficient to make an oil well as soon as the water situation is solved. A number of boiling tests were made but all showed water along with oil. The west American-ave section of the Long Beach field sprung a little surprise with a 600 barrel, clean oil, free from water producer at Bay Hills No. 1. The Bay Hills well is surrounded by wells that have been blessed with water trouble since development work started on the west side. The Bay Hills producer went down to 4300 feet a little deeper than surrounding wells, secured a perfect water job and is producing 25 gravity oil. The advent of Bay Hills in the deeper zone is expected to stimulate much new development work immediately. That there is neither an eastern extension or a deep sand to be developed east of the old Yorba Linda oil fields has just been provided by one of Wm. P. Webb, sr., and has already covered most of the packing houses, the city dump and the greater part of the industrial district. In only one instance, that of a prominent Greek restaurant, has there been any opposition, Dr. Palge said, and the law gives the health officers the authority to go ahead there at the proprietor's health officer. The advent of Bay Hills in the deeper zone is expected to stimulate much new development work immediately. That there is neither an eastern extension or a deep sand to be developed east of the old Yorba Linda oil fields has just been proven by the Mutual Oil Co. The Mutual's test well went to 5395 feet and never got a showing of any kind. Cores taken at the bottom of the hole revealed the formation standing at angle of 90 degrees. The Union Oil Co. will try out the upper zone of its Richfield Chapman property in Chapman No. 15. The upper zone of the Hole lease southeast of Richfield proved a good thing and the Union's work on the Chapman will be awaited with considerable interest. Chapman 15 has been making a little production at 45 and has been plugged back to 3440. At Culver City operators are anxiously awaiting the outcome of the Mohawk Oil & Gas Co.'s test well. The well was drilled to about 2300 feet and a string of 6¼ set at 2260. At the time the pipe was set the well was showing rather encouragingly and it is believed it will make good. Redrilling work at Cypress is making good progress and before the end of the year Chas, T. B. Jones the new owner of the Gadde Oil Development Co. hopes to have the 3700 foot well in position to go ahead. At Hawthorne the Winwell Oil Co.'s test well drilling at 4302 ran into some oil indications that looked very good on the ditch. A core taken at 4819 failed, however, to show the much sought sand. The Winwell is believed to be on structure, and may prove a surprise yet. Drilling on the Calny Oil Co.'s well at Irvine continues slow. Some 600 feet of conglomerate has been drilled thru and now at 1200 feet the log registers no change of formation. Scientists are at work to produce synthetic rocks.
