TREATMENT OF DECIDUOUS TREES
There are numerous insect pests that attack our deciduous fruit trees. Some of these can be successfully controlled by the proper treatment while the trees are in a dormant condition. The following list will give you an idea of some of the pests that are common, mostly found on deciduous trees:
San Jose Scale, Black Scale, Oyster Shell Scale, European Fruit Leachhum, Peach Tree Twig Bore, Flat Headed Apple Tree Bore, Deciduous Red Spider, Shot-Hole Borer, Woolly Apple Aphis.
In spraying for some of these pests, the same spray used for the control of certain fungus trouble can be applied with success. The scale pests mentioned can all be controlled successfully with a dormant strength of miscellaneous oil, distillate mechanical mixture or crude oil emulsion.
Another remedy which can be applied against the well-known San Jose Scale, which is very common on deciduous trees in this country, is the liquid lime and sulphur solution which will also control certain fungus troubles which attack deciduous fruit trees. This same treatment will also control the Peach Tree Twig Bore and these formulas should be applied while the trees are dormant.
The Flat Headed Apple Tree Bore is a very common pest and, as a rule, gains entrance thru sunburn and to avoid this, the trees should be whitewashed. It seems that the sun, during the winter, is responsible for the sunburn of deciduous trees and an application of the following formula will prevent this pest from gaining an entrance into young deciduous

Hanging Does Not Prevent Murder
LOS ANGELES, Dec. o.-That capital punishment never proved a deterrent of murder and that the nation's system of jurisprudence needs a radical revival of its methods of judging and punishing those found guilty of homicides and other heinous offenses were the declarations here today of Attorney Walter Bachrach of Chicago who was associated with Clarence Darrow in the defense of Leopold and Loeb, the boy mur-derers.
"Research proves that it is really a legal sanction for killing and while it exists the murderer does not stop to differentiate between killing by the state," said Baehrach.
"Experience has demonstrated in Michigan and other states where capital punishment has been abol-

WANTED—Woman for genera- housework and care of children Must be experienced and have rat-
which attack deciduous fruit trees. This same treatment will also control the Peach Tree Twig Bore and these formulas should be applied while the trees are dormant.
The Plat Headed Apple Tree Bore is a very common pest and, as a rule, gains entrance thru sunburn and to avoid this, the trees should be whitewashed. It seems that the sun, during the winter, is responsible for the sunburn of deciduous trees and an application of the following formula will prevent this pest from gaining an entrance into young deciduous trees:
Quicklime, 5 pounds.
Salt, 1/2 pound.
Sulphur, 1/4 pound.
Slake the lime slowly with water and add the salt and sulphur while it is boiling. Add enough more water to make a good wash. This is good for whitewashing the bodies of trees in the fall. In localities where there are deer, this whitewash is not recommended, as the deer are said to be attracted by the salt it contains and injure the tree.
The Shot-Hole Bore is a very serious pest in this county and the following recommendations are made for its control:
"Keeping the trees as healthy as possible and inspecting nursery stock to prevent introduction are the most important considerations with regard to this beetle. If infestation does occur, all trees which are badly attacked should be removed and burned and the others carefully pruned to remove all the infested parts possible. The application of a coat of carbolat whitewash (1 pint of 25 per cent crude carbolic acid to 10 gallons of white wash) is recommended."
For the control of Woolly Aphis and California Peach Bore use para-dichlorobenzene as follows: from three quarters to one ounce of para-dichlorobenzene is sufficient to treat and average size tree. First, level the surface of the soil around the base of the tree; then sprinkle the material around the tree in a continuous band or circle two inches wide with the inner margin two to four inches from the bark of the tree. Cover the material with soil around the base of the tree to a depth of from two to four inches and pack well with several strokes of the shovel.
So, in most instances, if we apply a dormant strength of liquid lime and sulphur to our trees, we will control some of the insect pests and be applying at the same time a good fungicide. If we whitewash our young trees, we will avoid sunburn and protect them from the attack of some of the tree bores that cause irreparable damage to young trees. An application of a good oil spray will also destroy most of the scale insects that attack them and free the trees of moss and lichen.
The reason this matter is being discussed at this time is because the treatment is botanized, ordained.
"AZUSA WILL GET BARTLETT FACTORY
The Bartlett Nu-Products Co., which might have located in Anaheim, will put its factory in Azusa, according to a report yesterday. The town was said some time ago to have offered G. M. Bartlett 20 acres free of charge, but yesterday's report said he had purchased 24 acres.
The plant, consisting mainly of several sheds, is now at Pasadena. Bartlett's principal products, W. H. Y., was used by two of the world filers when they were lost in Alaska, the only food they had for eight days, and Bartlett claimed to have contracts with the government for several million dollars' worth of the beverage. The Anaheim C. of C., however, was unable to confirm this claim.
GORE IMPROVED
CHICAUD, Dec. 8.—Howard M. Gore, secretary of agriculture and Gov. elect of Virginia was inkling that it is really a legal sanction for killing and while it exists the murderer does not stop to differentiate between killing by the state," said Baechrach.
"Experience has demonstrated in Michigan and other states where capital punishment has been abolished that there are fewer homicides than occur where murderers are executed." No deep study of the relationship between capital punishment and homicide was made until Lewis Laudes, warden of Sing Sing prison, engaged in the research that made possible his book, "Men's Judgment of Death," which bears out my contention.
"Leopold and Loeb got just what they deserved—a life sentence. The country needs enlightenment. Prejudice and not judgment govern findings in criminal cases too often. Capital punishment is merely retributive and does not serve as a warning. Only our juvenile courts and their attachments are studying crime selentifically."
Of course we have made some progress—we no longer hang witches, for instance. But we are still far behind! I believe we need a change in our form of judgment in homicides, for instance, under which a jury would sit only to determine the guilt or innocence of the accused. In case of a verdict of guilt, the prisoner should be turned over to a body of scientists, including psychiatrists and similar experts, for the study of the individual, to determine whether or not he is a mental defective."

necessary in some cases to apply
an insecticide at dormant strength
to successfully control the insect
pests or fungus diseases and if
this is delayed until after the
trees put forth in the spring, it
will injure the blossoms and foliage.
Later, we expect to give the
proper procedure in handling deducuous fruit trees thru the growing season in order to destroy the
insects and diseases that attack
the fruit and foliage.

Secy. Gore came to Chicago as a member of the presidential party Thursday to attend the Livestock Show.
