WAHLBERG, County Agricultural Agent. Many practical demonstrations of the importance of better irrigation practice were provided during the recent wind storm. An extensive tour taken by the writer following the winds has definicely shown that groves having received proper irrigation management during the recent years have come thru the storm in much better shape than those that have either lacked sufficient moisture in the past or may possibly have had too much. In the former case the ground has been sufficiently dry to prevent the normal development of roots, while in the case of over-irrigation, roots may have rotted off because of lack of proper soil environ ment for normal development. Groves presenting a good succulent growth during the past season have generally resisted the effects of the drying winds, while those groves, on the other hand, that had very little, if any, growth during the past year were in many cases seriously burned, particularly where they were in the direct path of the desert blast. In a few cases where deep subsoil had been practiced, trees seemed to burn rather uniformly; no doubt due to excessive root cutting. The root systems in these cases were unable to take up sufficient moisture to meet the emergency demands made on the tree. Never before has the windbreak shown up to better advantage than they did during this storm. In sections of the country where a large portion of the windbreaks have been removed during the past five to ten years, considerable damage has resulted. DAILY SCHEDULE MOTOR TRANSIT STAGES TO LOS ANGELES AND INTERMEDIATE POINTS Leave Anaheim, 6:05, 6:45 a.m. Then 16 and 55 minutes after each hour to 7:15 no doubt due to excessive root cutting. No doubt this year's experience will compoll my orchardists to replant windbreaks they have recently removed. This year's experience further corroborates the fact that soil moisture alone cannot save an orchard from wind injury. A second factor must be taken into consideration, namely, the force of the wind. The wind injury survey conducted by the Agricultural Extension Service last year and the observations made so far this year conclusively show that in the worst exposures the force of the wind must be cut by some physical means and the most practical means so far is the windbreak. It is true that some competition is encountered in the growing of the windbreak and the permanent orchard trees, but it has been found that this competition can be controlled quite satisfactorily and kept down to a minimum. The damage occurring from the lack of windbreak protection in certain cases has cost the grower many times the amount of damage that may have occurred from windbreak competition. Some groves that were properly irrigated during the past season show some burning this week. If checking up on the history of these groves it has been found that the orchard has not had sufficient time to develop a normal root system in one season's revised irrigation practice. The lesson that last week's experience teaches us is to give closer attention to improved irrigation practice and increased windbreak protection. "It's aquecer world," declared the young broker. "Only a month ago I was asking that young lady stenographer for references." "Well?" "Now her dad has come to me to furnish references." "Huh?" "Yes, I asked her to marry me last week."
