This was the foreign office characterization of the situation in the Sudan today in the first comprehensive report from official source. Martial law has been effective in the Sudan since 1899, the foreign office said, so its application at this time does not indicate an extreme outbreak. The mutiny occurred Nov. 27 when the rebellious soldiers, with two machine guns, marched on Gordon College. Two platoons of British stopped them. The British commander addressed the mutiners and asked them to disperse. Acting Sirdar Kuddleston also appeared and ordered the mutineers to disperse, when they refused to recognize his authority, he gave orders that the Sudanese be rounded up. The number of casualties in the ensuing fighting was not fixed, the foreign office stated. The situation was under control today the statement added. VARNUM NAMED ON STATE COMMITTEE Geo. Varnum of Anaiheim has just received notice of his appointment by President Geo. T. McNoble of Stockton to one of the standing committees of the State Bar Association. Before election, Mr. Varnum compiled and furnished to the press of the entire state a comprehensive analysis of the 18 proposed amendments and initiated laws, which were given wide publicity. The State Bar Ass'n, this year will propose important changes designed to expedite procedure in the courts and maintain the highest standards of the profession. These improvements are to be made by the adoption of what has come to be called the self governing bar, which is rapidly growing in favor as it is investigated by bench, bar and the public. One of the most important results will be that it will enable quick action in the investigation and discipline of those lawyers who violate the code of ethics of the bar. Mr. Varnum hopes to devote considerable time in helping secure the approval and active resistance of lawyers and others for this much needed improvement. CONCORDIA MALE CHOIR IN CONCERT Under direction of Prof. Rasbach, a talented musician and teacher of both piano and singing, 25 or more of the famous male choir of the Concordia club will give a grand concert at 8 p.m., Tuesday at Concordia hall. In 1915 this group of singers won a silver loving cup or first prize for being the finest of its class in the grand singing contests held that year in Los Angeles. The club has some very fine singers who have been students of music since they "wore knee pads." And most of the members have belonged to the choir for many years.
