CALIFORNIA THE
THERE IS ONLY ONE POLA NEGRI
By ERNST LUBITSCH
(Note: Ernst Lubitsch, director of "Passion," "The Marriage Circle," etc., gives this answer in response to the query which he has heard more frequently than ever since he and Miss Negri were reunited at the Paramount West Coast Studio to make "Forbidden Paradise," which comes to the California Theatre for a two days' run next Wednesday.
There is only one Pola Negri. I have always said so and my conviction has become stronger since completing "Forbidden Paradise." It was the first time we worked together since the days in Europe when we began making pictures. All her gestures, her walk, her very presence, seem fraught with some dynamic quality which gives everything she does a deeper meaning and a dramatic value. This quality constitutes Pola's peculiar genius for the screen and enables her to cover all ranges of dramatic expression with a minimum of mimetic gestures.
Pola has a wonderful gift of humor. In addition she is a woman who has studied life and who, as a result, has acquired a sense of proportion. Whether she is the vampire or the heroine, she is never all black or all white. She is that subtle mixture of light and shadow which is truly human.
When Pola plays the role of a woman whose wiles ensnare, she does not give one of those stock-in-trade seductions, crude and stereotyped. Pola Negri cannot do anything.

STRATFORD FOUR HEADS VODE BILL
The Stratford Comedy Four comprise a quartette of joy and harmony dispensers, who present a laughable comedy offering, which they call "School Frolics."
Consisting of a series of mirth-provoking situations, real snappy dialogue and some excellent harmony singing, also perfectly arranged and presented as to give an audience fifteen minutes of real amusement.
The four other big acts, together with Prisella Dean in "The Siren of Seville", a typical H. H. Van Loan story of action and thrills, romance and adventure, completes a program far superior to any presented at the California.
The "Siren" is our idea of perfect entertainment. Few films have equalled it.
Leaving over the Santa Fe: Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Newton of the Newton Process Co., who left for a vacation trip to Colorado, Oklahoma and Missouri.
Mrs. H. H. Knox is confined to her bed with flu.

LAUGH A MINUTE FEATURE FARCE
If you're sensitive about laughing out loud at a movie, don't go to see "Reckless Romance" which the California Theater is offering this week. Because you'll have to laugh loudly and often. On second thought, we advise you to see it anyway, because you'll be so interested that you won't know whether you gave a loud guffaw or a melodious ripple.
This Al Christie feature is one of the best fares that the screen has ever had. It is adapted from the Broadway laughing hit, "What's Your Wife Doing?" and is teeming with funny situations. Joseph Farnham's titles are positively brilliant and a source of laughs on their own account.
Briefly the story is about a pair of newlyweds, still in the numb stages of love, who are forced to get a divorce if they are to inherit Grandpa's millions. They elect hubby's best friend, who has a girl of his own, to be co-respondent. They try various ways of being caught in a compromising situation with the result that they succeed in getting everybody in wrong, but they never succeed in getting "compromised."
One of the most brilliant casts over assembled interprets this hilarious tale. It includes T. Roy Barnes, Harry Myers, Wanda Hawley, Sylvia Breamer, Tully Marshall, Jack Duffy, Lincoln Plummer, Morgan Wallace and George French.
Scott Sidney directed and did a splendid job.
You'll come up smiling after seeing this one and will feel reckless enough to treat yourself to an array of dazzling merits.

Hear Convention Report
Anaheim W. C. T. U. will meet Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 2:30, with Mrs. T. H. Walker, 208 East Broadway, Mrs. Alma J. Kellogg, of Santa Ana, county treasurer of the union, will tell of her experiences at the national convention in Chicago, from whence she has but recently returned. Everyone interested is welcome.
Saturday will be the future gift night, and an array of gifts that will represent a great outlay of cash will be given away each Saturday. In addition to this, particularly splendid photoplay program will be offered.
Aside from the Sunday picture program, Mr. Hartman in cohunction with Frank Stannard, Anaheim representative of the West Coast Theaters, Inc. and G. T. Ingram, resident manager and associate owner, have arranged for brilliant stage presentations such as adorn only the big metropolitan theaters of Los Angeles, San Francisco and similar show centers. These acts will constitute added attractions as part of the big Sunday programs.
The program for next week starting tomorrow should serve as a splendid criterion of just what is in store for local theatergoers. On Sunday only, that great picture "Revelation" starring Viola Dana and Lew Cody will be featured upon the screen. This is the picture which created such a furore at the California theater, Los Angeles recently.
On the stage, the celebrated Castillian Serenaders, a company of notable musical artists will be presented amid a special stage setting. This should constitute one of the biggest Sunday programs of the current year. George Turner will also be heard in solo on the big Wurlitzer.
Monday and Tuesday a special two-day Vaudeville road show program featuring the great Julie Buffano Band will be shown. On the screen, "Reckless Romance" and a snappy Christie comedy will be offered. This is a special pro-
