Peterson, known to local police as "the barefoot burglar," Jim Thompson and Carl N. Peterson, was killed in a gun battle with Detective John J. Kush of the local police department, as he was being questioned in connection with the theft of an auto. Peterson was identified from descriptions and pictures of him in the local rogue gallery. He had been arrested here in 1918 at which time he confessed to having committed more than 100 burglars. He was returned to San Quentin penitentiary in California without trial here, however, to complete seven years of a sentence for robbery in Alameda co. Previously he had served four years in prison in Denmark, police records showed. Two letters addressed to Peterson were found in his pocket. They were signed Hazel Jean Peterson, 1001 West Eleventh-st., Vancouver, B.C., and mailed in Vancouver last Saturday. Canadian police have been asked to arrest the woman and hold her for Seattle authorities. Two loaded pistols and a large supply of ammunition were found in Peterson's possession. A long list of jewelry, most of which had been recently reported stolen; an Oregon auto license and an Oreo. BUENA PARK BUENA PARK, Nov. 25. (Spl.) The Sunday school board met at the Geo. A COMMON GOD There is one thing that all mankind worships. It is Greatness. To the few greatness is symbolised by William Shakespeare, Leonard di Vinci, Richard Wagner, Charles P. Steinmetz; to the many it is represented by Jack Dempsey, Babe Ruth, Billy Sunday, Barnarr MacFadden; but the emotion is the same. It is natural to believe in great men. "Nature seems to exist for the excellent." Emerson observed. "The world is upheld by the veracity of good men; they make the world wholesome. They who lived with them found life glad and nutritious." "Life is sweet and tolerable only is our belief in such society; and actually, or ideally, we manage to live with superiors. We call our children and our land by their names. Their names are wrought into the verbs of languages, their works and effigies are in our houses, and every circumstance of the day recalls an anecdote of them." The search after the great is the dream of youth, and the most terrifying occupation of mankind. "The race goes with us on their credit," opined Emerson. "The knowledge that in the city is a man who invented the wonder of the day, raises the credit of all citizens." Our religion is the love and cherishing of these patrons. The gods of fable are the shining moments of great men. We run all our vessels in the same mould. Our colossal theories of Judish, Christian, Buddhism, Mohammedan, are the necessary and structural action of the human mind. "The student of history is like a man going into a warehouse to buy clothes or carpets. He furnishes he has a new article. If he goes to the factory, he shall find that his new stuff still repeats the scrolls and rosettes which are found on the interior walls of the pyramids of Thebes. Our thelam is the purification of the human mind. Man can paint, or make, or think nothing but man. He believes that the great Little Joan Rock entertained a number of little friends at the hotel Friday afternoon. Mrs. Fleshman of Fallbrook is visiting her sister Mrs. A. C. Reed. Our thelam is the purification of the human mind. Man can paint, or make, or think nothing but man. He believes that the great material elements had their origin from his thought. And our philosophy finds one essence collected or distributed." Emerson counted that man great who inhabits a higher sphere or thought; into which other men rise with labor and difficulty; he has but to open his eyes to see things in a true light, and in large relations; whilst they must make painful correction, and keep a vigilant eye on many sources of error. The great are near, we know them at sight. They satisfy expectation and fall into place. What is good is effective, generative; makes for itself room, food, and allies.
