LOCKHART AND ORMS NEARLY 1000 PRIZES FOR ESSAYS Contests for School Children Will Spread Safety Propaganda Elementary school children of the southland again have a chance to distinguish themselves in writing safety essays. It is just announced that the Highway Education Board of Washington, D.C., will hold the fourth annual contest for elementary pupils. Last year 12 of the 13 prizes awarded in California were captured by southland students. The contest is national in scope and is open until December 20. There are 488 cash prizes and an equal number New Anti-Speed Drive on In L.A. Anaheimers and others driving in Los Angeles again have special reason to watch out. A new campaign was started this week, directed especially against speeders, more than 1000 of whom were arrested in two days. Purchase of 65 new motorcycles is recommended by the police commissioner for its pursuit squad. Fifty of the officers are on duty 24 hours each day, patrolling the streets. Thousands Admire Lincoln on Parade The petit salon of Lincoln cars this week ending on Thursday at the Ambassador Auditorium called to the attention of thousands comparatively unfamiliar with this fine car and its remarkable qualities. Last year 12 of the 13 prizes awarded in California were captured by southland students. The contest is national in scope and is open until December 20. There are 488 cash prizes and an equal number of medals to be awarded. Representing the Highway Education Board in this section, the public safety department of the A.C.S.C. is acting as a clearing house. Posters and circulars announcing details of the event are being sent to school superintendents, and it is hoped to have one of these in every school so that the competition will be thoroughly representative. "My Conduct on the Streets and Highways" is the subject to be discussed by the children, and the essays must not exceed 500 words in length. Each must be illustrated by an original drawing, appropriate photograph, or clip from a magazine or newspaper. Alluring rewards are held out for the best essays. The first prize will consist of a gold watch and a free trip in Washington, D.C. Gold watches will be awarded for the second and third prize essays. The highest awards among the state prizes are a gold medal and $15 as first, a silver medal and $10 for the second, and a bronze medal and $5 for the third. There are other honor awards. It is believed that the childreof the south have excellent chances to win the highest national awards, in view of the fact that for several years the club has been teaching safety in the public schools, and many of the children are well versed in how to take care of themselves. It is the policy of this motoring organization in its safety activities to work continuously for 365 days in the year, rather than depend on spasmodic campaigns during the year, for effective results. Cut In Tire Prices Is Only Temporary In the face of a market inclined upward James the Vulcanizer will start next week, beginning Monday, a sale of Goodyear All-Weather cord casings in sizes from 30 by 3½ to 32 yb 5 at prices that should attract many buyers. James wants it distinctly understood that these low sales prices do not in any sense signify another reduction in price to last indefinitely. He himself is doing the price-cutting and the special Lincoln On Parade The petit salon of Lincoln cars this week ending on Thursday at the Ambassador Auditorium called to the attention of thousands comparatively unfamiliar with fine car and its remarkable qualities. The exhibition chassis, the Johansson precision blocks and the electro-fog generator also roused much interest. The cutaway motor and body afforded proof of the working perfection of the motor as well as the car's charm of line and finish. The Lincoln has the V-shape motor, but it is different from that of the Cadillac. Price Reductions Wake Up Business The public's response to the sharp price reductions on Hudson and Essex coaches has resulted in an unprecedent large volume of business, according to James L. Dunn, Hudson and Essex distributor. "The cars and the price tell the story," declared Dunn. "For three years now Hudson-Essex have maintained a consistent lead in offering hitherto unheard of values in closed cars. These latest prices, applied to the finest Hudson and Essex cars ever built, are the climax of these years. The public acknowledges these values; we are not asked to give over-allowances for used cars taken in trade. We are fair with the public and the public is fair with us." "The reduced prices actually necessitate a new viewpoint on automobile values and prices. I venture to say that if any motorist will ask ten men at random the price of a Hudson coach, a very small proportion of them indeed would name a list figure as low as it is offered at. As for closed car values, of course no other organization has had anything like Hudson-Essex's experience in manufacturing enclosed cars at around open car prices. "This is the particular enclosed car season of the year, and more and more car owners are looking for automobiles which furnish them actual closed car comforts at open car cost. There is a better general business feeling, too. The public is looking for good used cars as well as new ones." Jordan has recommended construction of two roads in the Santa Barbara National Forest this year. One of the proposed roads will be the new Frazier Mountain lookout in Ventura-co and the other is to be an addition to the present road to Figueroa Mountain lookout in the Zaca district. A Class Ad is best little saloeman. DISPLAY ROOM NEARLY FINISHED Improvements to the Studebaker display room at Chestnut and South Los Angeles-sts are nearly finished. With a rod tiled roof, ornamental cement stone pillars with Greek capitals, rough finish walls which will be colored to match, etc., the building looks new. The roof was raised three feet to allow plenty of space for the mezzanine floor which has been added to house the business offices. For the future welfare of the scholar, a school of canvas would be far better than a school of brick or stone in which ventilation and heating are not directed with intelligence. Used car dealers, also, can't keep down to the "book values" of used cars, but must often cut under them. Another interesting point is that the Ford is the only car, it is said, that is looked at by the prospect mainly in terms of condition and not yearly model. The buyer expects to use the car for purposes that won't demand his spending a lot of money with which to keep it up. But he must have it in good mechanical shape, even though he can somewhat or largely ignore appearances. C. is serving to distribute repair work among the garages in the vicinity of where trouble is encountered by drivers. This situation is appreciated by garage owners and motorists alike in Anaheim, and the new plan is meeting with general approbation. The average time for getting stalled cars under way for the first month the service was in effect was nine minutes. This remarkable record is attributed largely to the fact that the automobile club has contracted with official garages in every portion of So. Calif., so that wherever the motorist encounters trouble, help is available within a few miles. The maximum distance is about 10 miles, although it has been found that the garages are well placed that at least one or two of them are within two or three miles of the majority of trouble cases. More than 160 official garages have been contracted with by the A. C. S. C. for its tow car service. While this seems like a large number, it must be remembered that more than 163,000 motorists are members of the organization. Hunt is showing them to wonderful advantage in the big windows of the S. Los Angeles-st. store. Demand for Xmas Radio Sets Heavy Anaheimers who intend to purchase Kennedy radio sets as Christmas presents had better put in their orders at once, says A. Bevillard, who points out that of 30 sets which were promised him by Nov. 17, he received only six, with a few more on the 19th. The demand has become too heavy for the present factory production. The new price on Model No. 5 stimulated sales in Bevillard's opinion. Felicitate Herr On Getting Stromberg Ben Herr is being congratulated by his friends this week on taking over the Stromberg carburator for Anaheim and vicinity. His shop, one of the best equipped in the city, will also serve this carburator. The carburetor is only one of three notable ignition articles of which Herr is representative, the others being the Exide battery and the German Bosch magneto the three forming the trif required by every car. The Dirigible Shenandoah was equipped with all three on its trans-Antiatic and trans-continental flight. Plain Dealer Classified Ads produce results. New Graham 1-Ton Truck on Display The first new Graham Brothers one-ton truck arrived in the city recently and is now being displayed by Charley Mann, Dodge Brothers Dealer. An exceptional amount of interest is already being shown and indications point to an unusual number of fall and winter sales. For a commercial vehicle, it is surprisingly attractive, an excellent example of the persistent trend toward better appearance as well as better quality in the light haulage field. "Graham Brothers advance has been one of the most spectacular in the truck business," said Mann. "Three years ago they were in twentieth position. Today they are in sixth. This achievement speaks eloquently for the truck—more eloquent than anything we ourselves might say for it. "It is plain to anyone who sees this new one-ton truck that their continued advance is inevitable. To be able to build such a substantial and attractive truck at such a low price means that Graham Brothers have definitely taken their position among the first few in the industry. With limited production this truck at this price would be impossible. Few truck frames are built with such a liberal excess margin of strength. The real axle with its finely proportioned strength is equal to years of the hardest service. BUICK PEOPLE BRING OUT COACH The first of two new body models, coaches, arrived Tuesday at the local garage of the Motor Sales Co. It is in the master six, with the same chassis and refinements and appointments as the other members of the line. A standard six coach is expected shortly, a description of which is unnecessary, because it will be mainly a smaller car corresponding to the other. Like the other master sixes this coach has Duno paint, four-wheel mechanical brakes, ball bearings in steering-spindles, six-ply low-pressure tires and axles built for the tires, one-piece windshield, etc. The body is easily accessible and the windows are low and wide. The upholstery is of whipcord broadcloth, as good looking as it is substantial. The two cars increase the number of the 1925 models to 25, of which 16 are in the master line and nine in the standard. Have you noticed that the brake on your right rear wheel seems to take hold more quickly? Does your right rear tire show evidence of far more wear than the left tire? Do your brakes grab or seize when you have made a heavy application? Does a sudden application of your brakes cause the car to swerve to one side? If your car does any of the above mentioned little stunts, then your brakes are out of adjustment. It does not necessarily mean that you should have your brakes relined, but for your own protection you should have the brakes carefully adjusted. The N.A.C. advises motorists that the California Vehicle Act is very explicit as to brake facilities on cars, stating that: "Every motor vehicle operated upon a public highway shall be provided at all times with brakes which shall be adequate to promptly check the speed of and to stop such motor vehicle." FILM STAR WEDS LOS ANGELES, Nov. 22—Belle Bennett, screen and stage star, will be married to Fred Windemere, motion picture director or Thanksgiving Day at the home of Mrs. Blanche Upright, Hollywood author, it was announced today. Daily additions are being made to the list of stars to appear at Ascet Speedway on Thanksgiving Day. Tomorrow Lockhart and Ralph Ormsby will meet in two races. Features of the program of events will be the Italian Victory Crown dash, Universal Sweepstakes and Grauman Invitational race. The latest Thanksgiving entry is Ralph Mulford, one of the real veterans of the track, who has swept off prize after prize on the principal tracks of the country. Mulford, it appears now, will drive a specially built Duesenberg. Negotiations are in progress. Otherwise he will drive a Miller Special or possible Durant Special. Harlan Fengler is out of it because of injuries. He was hurt at Indianapolis last May while trying to break the record of the Indianapolis track. He raced again at Kansas City, Altoona, Pa., and Fresno, but omitted the Charlotte race because his shoulder again was troubling him. He will not act as pit manager of the Durant team. Pietro Bordino, already booked to race, arrived this week and was greeted by a big band of Italians. Olin Davies will drive one of the Wills St. Clair eights in the Thanksgiving Day race. With a full sense of the seriousness of the statement—carefully weighing the meaning of every word—Chrysler-Maxwell engineers, without reservation, promise you, in this new Maxwell, performance surpassing in every essential any four-cylinder car in the world today. To make that sweeping assurance more definite and specific—we promise you in speed, in power, in reliability of power, in swift response, and even more particularly in riding steadiness and comfort, results no four-cylinder car has yet been able to attain. To go still further into details, the new Maxwell has speed capacities far beyond any car of its type and class, and in the rare instances in which they may have to be used, will register them with an absence of vibration without precedent in four-cylinder construction. Chrysler-Maxwell engineers have been actuated by the conviction that in addition to its inherent and natural economies, the four-cylinder principle possessed possibilities of power and speed capable of being translated into ease and steadiness which have never been fully developed. They set out to overcome what have all too readily been accepted in the past as limitations in the four-cylinder engine and to convert these limitations into positive advantages. No one can doubt that success has crowned their efforts, after even so short an experience as a half hour's driving demonstration of the car. Judged by the unusual and extraordinary character of its performance, this Maxwell is literally a new and immeasurably better type of four-cylinder motor car. Frank P. Taggart Co. 328 W.
