SUES BARRYMORE TO GET BACK HER PLAY ABOUT POR Miss Sophie Treadwell (Lucy Stone League name of the wife of W. O. McGechan, sports authority) is suing John Barrymore, actor, for return of a play about Poe, poet, she submitted three years ago. She says he rejected it in favor of one written by his wife ("Michael Strange") but after she read Mrs. Barrymore's play, she told him it was an imitation of hers, and he dropped production. With her bulkheads filled with water, the Santa Cecilia limped in to port under her own steam late yesterday, preceded several hours by the Washington which arrived with her entire forepeak caved in and with her wireless apparatus out of commission. Three merits of the Washing's crew were injured when the ships collided. TEST PROVES TAX IS LEGAL WASHINGTON, Nov. 17.—The New York state law requiring foreign corporations to pay a tax for doing business in that state, was upheld today by the United States supreme court. Test cases were brought by Bass, Ratcliff and Gretton sought to avoid payment of a franchise tax of $826, while the Rhode Island corporation attacked the law because of a tax of $13,582 levied on the basis of its net income. The supreme court held that the Franchise tax was neither arbitrary nor unreasonable and that the method of apportionment was not unfair. SEEKS 30 MILLIONS MORE FOR NAVY CYPRESS CYPRESS, Nov. 17. (Spl.)—The regular meeting of the Cypress C. of C. will be tomorrow evening at the school hall. Several matters of interest are coming up for discussion. Several important committees should be ready to make their reports. Mrs. O. P. Bunyard and Mrs. C. E. Wilcox have arranged a musical program that should be very entertaining. Mrs. Lanier has charge of the refreshments and there will be something worth while along that line. Charles Jones, who is connected with the Buena Park News, will give a short talk on the Cypress school's new adventure into the newspaper world. The Chatter Box Mr. Jones has also promised to help out with a song or two. Fire Chief Owens of Buena Park will be on hand to give suggestions and aid in the establishing of a fire fighting unit in Cypress. A good sum has been promised by subscription for the purchase of apparatus. G. G. Priddy is heading this move. L. M. Frantz of the Southern California Edison Co., will be on hand to chat with the chamber on the workings of the Edison Co. The meeting should be worth while and everyone is invited to attend. Mrs. William Lanier underwent a very serious operation at the Artesia hospital last Friday. It is thought that the operation was a success and the patient is doing very nicely. Mrs. G. G. Priddy was called to Long Beach Friday by the very serious illness of her cousin Mrs. Tillie Mosey. Mrs. Mosey is well known in this section and her many friends will be glad to learn that she is recovering from her illness as well as could be expected. Mrs. L. C. Williams, who recently opened a restaurant in the Fulton block is making a decided hit with her menus. Sunday's special was a chicken dinner, and was well worth going a long way to get. Mrs. Williams makes a specialty of barbecued meats and the sandwiches made from these meats are a real treat. M. C. Chase is taking radium treatments for an eye trouble that has hampered the vision of his right eye for some time. CHILDREN'S BOOKS "When will these new books be ready to take out?" has been a frequent question asked by the children visiting the exhibit of children's books at the Fullerton public library lately. The exhibit is ended now and some of the books are cataloged and ready for use. The others will be ready soon, for all the lovely books played belong to the children of Fullerton through their library and may be taken home and enjoyed. The supreme court held that the Franchise tax was neither arbitrary nor unreasonable and that the method of apportionment was not unfair. SEEKS 30 MILLIONS MORE FOR NAVY WASHINGTON, Nov. 17.—Secretary of the Navy Wilbur today carried to congress his plea for funds to keep the U. S. navy at the strength authorized by the Washington armament conference. He appeared before the house appropriations committee with a request for an appropriation for the fiscal year 1925-26 of $323,000,000—$30,000,000 more than was allotted to the navy by the bureau of the budget. This sum will be necessary, Wilbur said, if the American navy is to be maintained at an equal ratio with that of Great Britain. Mrs. L. C. Williams, who recently opened a restaurant in the Fultuary block is making a decided hit with her menus. Local Masons took in the 6:30 dinner and the conferring of the third degree by the past masters of Yorba-Linda lodge. KELLOGG RETIRES LONDON, Nov. 17.—Official circles were informed that American Ambassador Kellogg's retirement has been scheduled for the first of next year. It was stated the information came from "semi-official" sources. Foolish man! He feels biggest among inferiors, and yet itches to associate with his betters.
