VIOLATORS OF TRAFFIC CHIEF STARS OF WORLD IN RACE Culver City to See Bordino, Cooper, Hill, etc., on the 27th CULVER CITY, Nov. 15.—Culver City now takes its place as one of the links in the chain of speedway cities stretching across the continent. When the 250-mile championship motor race is staged on the new million dollar speedway Thanksgiving Day, the fame of Culver City will be flashed around the world. With the entry of Pletro Bordino, the wild Italian speed king Free Clinic to Test Eyes, Plan San Francisco opticians have arranged a ball to be held Nov. 19 to raise funds with which to finance a free clinic where drivers' eyes will be tested. Fifty 25 per cent of the auto crashes are due to visual defects, says the opticians. Drivers are expected to visit the clinic voluntarily as a matter of common sense prevention of accidents. STOCK CHRYSLER BESTS PALOMAR Up Palomar Hill from the gate to Bailey's hotel in 29 minutes is the record of a Chrysler stock model, carrying four passengers. For the first time on record, according to Z. B. Pollette of the Frank P. When the 250-mile championship motor race is staged on the new million dollar speedway Thanksgiving Day, the fame of Culver City will be flashed around the world. With the entry of Pletro Bordino, the wild Italian speed king comes from Torino with his flat racer to participate in great speed conclave that will collate the Culver City bowl, the championship race takes on all the rallour of an international event. Bordino is a popular idol of the speed fans. Not only is the great Pletro popular with his own countrymen, but the race fans at large consider him one of the greatest drivers of all times and already the news has been published throughout Europe that Bardino is coming to America to race at Culver City on Culver City’s new speedway which experts say will be the world’s fastest race course. There is another great foreign driver in the list for the Culver City inaugural classic. Antoine Mourre, former French flying act, represents another European country in the Thanksgiving Day contest. Murre made his American racing debut in the final race on the Beverly Hills speedway last February. He had a narrow escape from death when he wrecked his car in the early stages of the speed battle, but since then he has competed in practically every race staged in America and has become recognized as one of the leading drivers in the sport. The competition between the Frenchman and the Italian should be seen indeed. Besides Bordino and Mourre there are many American stars who represent the cream of the racing fraternity. There is Tom Milton, former champion and two times winner of the Great Indianapolis 600-mile race. Earl Cooper, twice national champion and present leader in the chase for the 1924 title, is entered, as is Ralph DePalma, veteran Italian racer who is one of the most popular men who ever sat behind the wheel of a racing car. There are also Harry Harty, Bennett Hill, Robert McDonogh, Fred Comer, Cliff Durant, Jerry Wonderlich, Peter DePaola, Phil Schafer and others. ESCONDIDO ROAD DONE There is a continuous paved highway now from Oceanside on the coast route to Escondido on the inland, the A.C.S.C. announces. BESTS PALOMAR Up Palomar Hill from the gate to Bailey’s hotel in 29 minutes is the record of a Chrysler stock model, carrying four passengers. For the first time on record, according to Z.B.Follette of the Frank P.Taggart Co., distributors of the Chrysler and Maxwell, this climb has been successfully negotiated by an ordinary car such as any driver might use. The time practically the same as that established by a non-stock model, 28 minutes, 39 1-5 seconds. At no time during the entire climb was the car near the boiling point, according to newspaper witnesses, and the power, durability and stamina shown surprised even the distributors. A heavy fog forced the car, also to crawl from Escondito to the foot of Palomar. The car was checked out by a signed card at the Western Union office in San Diego, and a prominent newspaperman was on hand to check time at the foot of the mountain, with others at other points on the way. GAME TO DRIVE THRU TRAFFIC If more drivers would regard driving thru traffic as a game, to be learned thoroly, there would be few accidents, says Robert D. Maxwell of the San Diego Buick agency, who points to the value of the confidence developed. Says Maxwell: “This confidence develops from viewing one’s driving as a game,” he says. “The motorist loses his fear of congestion in his eagerness to demonstrate his skill.” One trial will satisfy, to paraphrase the time-honored advertising line. The next time you are driving through traffic make it a point to see how skillfully you can plan your ‘moves.’ You will be surprised, not merely at the enjoyment you get out of it, but particularly at the amount of time you save and the marked improvement in your driving. “Bukek owners of the new series declare it is just plain pleasure to drive their cars through the heaviest traffic. The pick-up and get-away of the car is such that motorists can hardly realize it is possible. “Generally speaking, in traffic it isn’t necessary to be aggressive to the point of inconvenience others. The road hog has no place in the world of sports. But on the other hand, neither is it necessary to drive through congested sections believing that you have not to be beaten at every hand.” Wet pavements and careful driving combined have probably caused more accidents than any other source of mishaps declaring Manager Hunt of the West Auto Supply Company, in discussing means of lessening the risk of winter motoring. The careless driver who rush through downtown-traffic, running wet slippery corners at high speed, or driving fast on the highway is a menace to every manist. Eastern authorities have contended that a car unlawfully equipped with a sure non-skiid device is not under proper control. In some sections of the country the law has been put in effect by drivers who have not so equip their cars are subject to arrest. The safest way to prevent skidding is to put on the chains when the rain first starts to fall after leaving them on until it is over. The driver equips his car with chains on the rear and suctires on the front, winter weather and wet pavements will hold terrors for him. “Crossword” Driver Procures His Go Are you a “crossword” driver? Not the fellow who swears or abusive, but the person who hides a car in such a manner that no one knows the answer within long and careful figuring. This new name for irresponsible drivers was sprung on the A.S.C. when a claim for damage was made by the owner of wrecked car. When asked what happened, he said he met of those pesky “crossword” drivers. SAFETY DRIVE DAILY ONLY PLAN Educational Campaign in Southland is Led By A.C.S.C. An intensive and continuous campaign every day in the year is the only successful method of insuring the public against accidents, according to observations made at the National Safety Congress, which recently held its annual convention in Louisville. Spasmodic efforts for a day or a week are unsatisfactory in the reduction of accidents, and gradually are being abandoned in favor. Whether any track records are broken or not, some of the fastest racing in months is anticipated, while each man is expected to use all the tricks of his trade. The track is in perfect condition, and both drivers will be ready to seize the lead when "Babe" Doyle waves his flag. Ormsby and Lockhart have shown the same time for a lap in their sprints about the oval and their cars are especially equipped with super-charging contrivances, front wheel brakes, etc., to enable them to stand the awful test. NEW WIRE GUARD PREVENTS WRECK An experiment made on the California state highway just north of San Diego has amply justified itself. It was a highway guard installed for experimental purposes on a sharp curve at the Santa Fe railroad grade crossing just north of Occanside, a short distance from San Diego. This guard, is a ribbon of strong link wire, two feet wide, attached to posts, was recently struck by a light sedan traveling at high speed. But for the guard, the sedan would have left the road and there probably would have been another to add to the long list of fatal highway accidents. As it was, the guard absorbed the shock of the impact of the sedan, and although one of the guard's supporting posts was broken off near the ground and a short stretch of the wire fabric somewhat damaged, the car was held in the road and nobody was hurt. This roadway device has been developed upon a new principle. It An intensive and continuous campaign every day in the year is the only successful method of insuring the public against accidents, according to observations made at the National Safety Congress, which recently held its annual convention in Louisville. Spasmodic efforts for a day or a week are unsatisfactory in the reduction of accidents, and gradually are being abandoned in favor of the permanent and educational work. Is the conclusion reached. Many communities in the southland are coming to realize that safety is a matter of general education and that the situation demands the best thought of experts. They are rapidly co-ordinating in the general plan of not only trying to establish safety by law, but of co-operating with city organizations, city authorities, state and national officers and special educational campaigns, taken directly into the public schools. Leading in this intensive educational campaign in this section is the A. C. S. C., which has a department devoted entirely to public safety. Its activities keep it in close touch with the city, county and state authorities, and its offices in 39 centers of population fit in well to be the guiding spirit in this necessary work. The campaign for safety is broadcasted by posters and story, by word of mouth and printed pamphlet, by photograph and motion picture, by precept and radio. It is believed that education is the best preventive, as statistics indicate that about 90 per cent of the accidents are preventable and that the loss of life, economic waste attendant upon injured persons and the destroyed property can be averted. Realizing that so many children are casualty victims and that accident conditions of tomorrow depend upon the attitude of the generation which is today in school, the auto club has carried on. In conjunction with the various school authorities, an extensive educational campaign prepared especially for the children to understand the hazards of modern day life. It has been found that the children are quick to realize these responsibilities and develop a spirit of watchfulness, not only of their own persons, but establish a protectorate over the smaller youngsters. Inquiry of the Anaheim san-rium, the Anaheim Community Some Admirable Admonitions From A.C.S.C. Drivers who believe they have heard every safety admonition regarding automobiles are liable to change their minds if they had the opportunity, by glancing through some of the suggestions that come to the touring bureau of the A.C. S.C. These are pungent, varied, forceful and sometimes funny. A few of the choicest recent suggestions are as follows: Before an auto turns turtle all the passengers should get out. The number of a car should be 6699 and should be worn upsidown. For the benefit of the man behind, the thoughtful autolist will mix perfume with gasoline. It is considered very bad form for a man driving an auto to try to drive between the headlights of another auto. This is liable to seriously damage the crank handle. Two automobiles should pass on either side of each other, rather than on a direct line through each other. Autos should always stop abruptly for washouts or burned. ANAHEIMERS ONLY 5 P.C. The number of complaints isn't nearly so great as in the summer months, when traffic is much heavier, but the reduction is due also to the fact that compliance with the law is more general, says the Judge. Speeding, particularly at intersections, is the most usual violation. The total figure of $510 is at the same time as large as some months showed in the court of Justice J. B. Cox at Santa Anna, "nemesis" of speeders, who insists upon prison bars for any speed of 50 miles an hour or more.
